It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bernice at the Bethany Care Centre, Airdrie, Alberta on July 15, 2005 after a long illness. Bernice is survived by her son William George HORAN, daughter Cindy and her husband John STAPLES, her two grandchildren Kirstin and Courtney STAPLES, sisters Edna (BROOKS,) Ann (MARTINI,) brothers Jim (O'DELL,) Reaford (O'DELL,) and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Cecil, brother Jack (O'DELL) and mother Sarah (O'DELL.) She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She had a great, caring personality with a feisty zest for life. Bertram G. “Bert” THACKER of Saint Thomas passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Thursday, May 5, 2005, in his 93rd year. Beloved husband for over 62 years to Margaret “Maggie” (BRAZIER) THACKER. Dearly loved father of Colin THACKER and his wife Marlene of North Bay, Lynn BELL and her husband Jim of Waterloo, Heather HOGAN and her husband Michael of London, and Jill McDONALD and her husband Michael of Vero Beach, Florida. Cherished grandfather of Christopher THACKER, Jeremy, Patrick and Meaghan BELL, Ryan HOGAN and his wife Jennifer, Caitlin, Graeme, Alexandra and Lara McDONALD. Loving great grandfather of Mackenzie HOGAN. Dear brother of Leslie THACKER and his wife Ruth of Waterloo, Sydney THACKER and his wife Shirley of Lindsay, and Doris OLIVE of Dunrobin. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sisters, Betty HORDEN and Joan OLEY and a brother, Leonard THACKER.
Born in Lewishman, Surrey, England, September 14, 1912, son of the late Bert and Bessie (PURCHASE) THACKER. During the Second World War, Bert served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He came to Saint Thomas in 1953 and became the Chief Executive Officer of the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital in 1954 (the same year it opened), retiring in 1977. Mr. THACKER was a founding member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives, a Life Fellow of the American College of Hospital Administrators and served on the board of the Ontario Hospital Association. He was a Charter President and founder of the Friendship School (Community Living), Saint Thomas, served as a board member of Fanshawe College (1979-1984) and in 1977 received Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal. In 1954 he joined the Rotary Club of Saint Thomas, served as president, was District Governor (1977) and a twice recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship. He was an active member of Trinity Anglican Church, Saint Thomas, a Past President of the Saint Thomas Golf and Country Club, a former volunteer for Mealson-Wheels and the Canadian Cancer Society and a life member of St. David's Lodge #302, Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons Cremation has taken place and private interment will be made in the Old Saint Thomas Churchyard, Walnut St. Friends will be received at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington Street, Saint Thomas on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A public memorial service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church (Wellington & Southwick Streets), Saint Thomas on Tuesday at 11: 00 a.m. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Foundation or the Rotary Club of Saint Thomas Foundation grateful ly acknowledged.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at Saint Mary's Hospital. Judith was the much loved wife of Esertino DONA and cherished mother of Jonathan and Caroline (Chris) PINNOCK.
Judith was also affectionately known as "everyone's mom". Survived by her siblings; sister Mary Ellen (Michael) HORGAN; brother James; brother John (Dawna) WINTERMEYER; sister Gretchen WINTERMEYER and sister Sarah (Peter) LANG. Also survived by her mother-in-law Pierina DONA, sister-in-law Iole (Carlo) BOT; brother-in-law John (Maria) DONA, her brother-in-law Dennis (Rose) DONA and by her loving aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her mother Helen Frances DELANEY; her father, the Honourable John Joseph WINTERMEYER, her step-mother Elizabeth Lang WINTERMEYER and her father-in-law Antonio DONA.
Judith had a love of teaching and shared her unique gift with a countless number of children for over 20 years with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. She was selected as Staff Member of the Year at St. Paul's Elementary School (2000-2001). Judith was honoured as one of the KW Oktoberfest Inc. "Women of the Year", recognizing her outstanding contribution to the community (1996). Currently, Judith was serving as the President of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church Catholic Women's League.

Born April 16, 1915, passed away February 23, 2005 at the Capilano Care Centre, West Vancouver. Predeceased in 1995 by her husband of 60 years Reginald, her mother Alice and brother Dennis. Survived by her much loved daughter Barbara and son-in law Jim HORGAN, granddaughter Jill (Doug) SPENCER and her great-grandchildren (her triplets) Justin, William and Rebecca. Also survived by grand_son Tim HORGAN and great-granddaughters Chasta and Christina HORGAN. Kathleen was born in England and spent a fondly remembered childhood in Elnora, Alberta. As a young woman she moved to North Bay, Ontario, and later to Toronto where she worked for many years in the offices of Simpson Sears. In 1970 she and Reg moved to Vancouver to join Barbara and her family. She worked and resided in West Vancouver for the remainder of her life. Kathleen loved to walk and she spent many hours on the seawall. She enjoyed people and loved to tell and hear a good joke. She will be missed by her Friends at Jerry's café where she met the gang every afternoon for coffee and conversation. Gramma loved life, sunshine, spring flowers and the birdies. She was a person who was made happy by small things. She loved her family and we loved her very much. She will be deeply missed by us. In loving memory of Ivan Douglas PATTERSON, December 15, 1933 - December 29, 2004.
Doug PATTERSON, a resident of Mindemoya, died at the Mindemoya Hospital on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at the age of 71 years. He was born in Sudbury, son of the late D. A. and Lottie (SLOSS) PATTERSON. Doug's father opened his store in Spring Bay in 1941. In 1970, Doug took over the store and Post Office and ran it until 1994. He was very active in the community as a member of Gore Bay Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the Spring Bay Community Centre Board and was the longest serving member on the Board of Education, starting on the Campbell Board in 1957 to 1969, then the Manitoulin Board until the Rainbow Board took over. Doug had a natural athletic ability and excelled in baseball, hockey and curling. He also enjoyed watching and traveled many places to watch his favourite sporting events. He also enjoyed hunting and each year was eager for deer season, where he spent many years hunting with the McDermid family at the Sand Bluffs Hunt Camp. Many fond memories will be cherished by all.
Dearly loved husband of Fern (PANTON) PATTERSON. Loving and loved father of Jill of Gore Bay and Juli (Danny) of Lively. Proud Grampa of Jade. Suddenly at London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus on Thursday, November 17, 2005, Bruno NIRTA, in his 71st year. Loving husband of the late Concetta NIRTA. Dear companion of Maria HORN. Survived by his children Joe NIRTA and his wife Donna, Frank NIRTA and his wife Angela and Max NIRTA. Dear 'Nonno' of Alex, Eric and Danielle. Dear brother of Vince and his wife Elena of Parkhill. Passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday morning, September 6, 2005 at the age of 86 years. Predeceased by his loving wife Maria Josephine (HORN) and dear father to daughter Dagmar and son Bruce; grandfather to Brent, Heather, Dana, Michael-Eric and Sheena and great-grandfather to Mackinley, Tyler and Michael. A longtime companion of Ruth STOLZ and her loving family in St. Catharines, Ontario. Ernst will be missed by all for both the active and energetic life he lead and the generosity he showed his family and Friends. We invite all family and Friends to the visitation which will be held at the Hulse and English Funeral Home and Chapel, 75 Church Street, St. Catharines 905-684-6346 on Friday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 205 Linwell Road, St. Catharines on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. MORTIFEE, Margaret Anderson (1921-2005)

"Marga', born in Bloomfontein, South Africa on January 19th, 1921, made her transition to the other side surrounded by her five children and loved ones at 6: 10 p.m. on Monday, December 12th, 2005 after a thankfully brief illness with cancer.
Born of Scottish parents, Marga was raised in the Orange Free State in South Africa. A volunteer Corporal in the South African Army during World War 2, this "Canteen Cutie" served primarily in Egypt, driving 5-ton lorries and contributing to a variety of other duties. At war's end, she met and married Bill ('Monty') MORTIFEE (deceased October 1st, 1998) in Pretoria, South Africa. As the wife of a Member of Parliament, she lived half time on a sugar cane farm in Zululand and half time in Cape Town. There she had four daughters (Margaret, Ann, Mary and Jane). In 1956 the family immigrated to Vancouver where she then had a son (Peter). She volunteered for a number of organizations. She had a keen interest in modern history and current events. She loved to read, particularly biographies. She was a supporter of the arts and innumerable humanitarian charities. In her later years she was thrilled to finally take up the art of painting.
Marga was a woman of extraordinary kindness, compassion and generosity. Her greatest devotion was to diminishing the suffering of others. Nothing gave her greater satisfaction and joy than knowing that those she cared about were well. Her primary passion was her family and her dearest loved ones. She had true empathy with an unusual capacity to listen and an authentic interest in people's lives. Her outrageous and irreverent sense of humour endeared her to all who met her.
Mum/Granny is survived by her five children Margaret MORTIFEE (Julien-Jacques SABY,) Ann MORTIFEE (Paul HORN,) Mary SIMONIN (Mark DRABOT), Jane MORTIFEE, Peter MORTIFEE (Nancy FISCHER), and her eight grandchildren Georges BOIS, Robert BOIS, Dora-Jane SIMONIN, Luke SIMONIN, Devon MORTIFEE, Jessica BIRCH, Lauren MORTIFEE and Claire MORTIFEE.
It is with both grief at the loss of such a beacon of light and yet profound gratitude for all the blessings she bestowed on so many of us, that the family invite those of you whose lives were touched by her to come and join in a celebration of her life on Sunday, December 18th, 2005 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (Jericho Club House). Marga requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army.

Passed away on March 12, 2005, in the arms of her beloved husband Walter, at St. Michael's Hospital. Born in Hamilton, Betty was the daughter of the late Archibald and Gladys HORN (née DAZÉ.) Predeceased by brothers Thomas and Clifford. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Betty's Life will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at St. Hilda's Anglican Church, 2339 Dufferin St. (at Eglinton).

Suddenly on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005, Steve passed away in his 36th year. Loving son of Mary and the late Bill HORN. Dear brother of Michael (Heather) and Natalie (Joe PROULX.) Passed away peacefully, after a courageous battle at Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, on Thursday, November 3, 2005. Doris HORN (nee GILLESPIE,) formerly of Guelph and Thornhill, in her 89th year. Beloved wife of the late John (Jack) HORN. Loving mother of Bob (Peggie,) Lynda FARAGHER (Ron,) and Susan BUDZIAREK. Dear grammy of Lisa, Daniel, Christopher (Sophie), Bill, Stefan (Jessie), and Katrina (Joel). Great-grammy of Lauren, Jeremy, Jakob, Clark, and Logan. At Doris' request, no service will take place. Passed away peacefully on December 22, 2005 at Grand River Hospital - Freeport Site, Kitchener. He received the last rites from Rev. V. YANISHEWSKY. Beloved husband of Romana. Loving father to Renata Roman and Orest CHABURSKY and father-in-law to Eugene ROMAN. Cherished grandfather to Krystina and William ROMAN and Luba and Gregory CHABURSKY. He will be missed by his sister Ulana and brothers Myron and Nestor with their families from Toronto, brother-in-law Lubomyr ZOBNIW and family from New York, family in Canada, U.S.A. and Ukraine. He will be fondly remembered as a dedicated pastor by many parishioners and priests at the following Ukrainian Catholic Churches: Kitchener, Church of the Transfiguration Guelph, Holy Protection; Cambridge, Nativity of Mother of God London, Christ the King; Saint Thomas, Exultation of the Holy Cross.
