Our 'Dear Ole Dad' was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 20, 1918 and passed away peacefully at the Royal City Manor in New Westminster, British Columbia on February 1, 2005 with his daughter at his bedside. Predeceased by his eldest son Paul (1979), our mother Annie (1992) and his beloved second wife Barbara ALLEMANG (2000), he will be lovingly remembered by son Arthur (Margaret) in Australia and daughter Carol REIMER (Garry,) grand_sons Paul and Kevin in Vancouver, and extended ALLEMANG family in Toronto: John (Patricia HOLTZ), Patricia, Elizabeth (Vicki VAN WAGNER) and Peter, and grandchildren Sam and Elizabeth, Indiana and Will, Sophie and Leo, Brooke, Cullen, and Brigid and Barbara's brother, Donald HONEY. Dad received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1941. After serving overseas in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (1943-46), Dad returned to complete his education in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Manitoba in 1948. During his lifetime, Dad touched countless lives through his medical practice and tireless work in the community that included serving as president of the following organizations: Manitoba Medical Association, Winnipeg General Hospital Medical Staff, Family Planning Association of Manitoba and Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. He was also a founding member of the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation and a full professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Manitoba. A loving father, role model, mentor and friend, Dad will remain in our hearts forever. She herself served as a nursing sister in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Margaret was an inspiring scholar and teacher, a devoted friend, a faithful Lutheran, a cherished aunt, and a welcoming companion for tenants from Ethiopia, Crimea and Iran who enriched her life immeasurably. Her stubbornness could be a challenge to those who thought they knew better, but it enabled her to maintain the independence she prized until the end. Margaret Eleanor HOLYWELL (WILCOX,) a longtime resident of East York, passed peacefully in her sleep, on Thursday, September 15, 2005, at age 99. Born 1906 in Sunderland, England. Cherished Aunt, Grandmother and Great-grandmother. Predeceased by her loving husband William Newby HOLYWELL and son John Arthur HOLYWELL, her parents Arthur WILCOX and Eleanor RUTTER, brothers Arthur and George, and sister Isabella STONE. Survived by daughter-in-law Polly HOLYWELL, grandchildren Frances and William, and great-granddaughter Fiona MOFFAT. Margaret will be missed by Friends and family in Sudbury, Toronto, Ohio and England. Margaret was a proud 50 year member of Oronto Temple No. 69, Daughters of the Nile. A visitation will be held on Monday at St. Luke's Anglican Church (904 Coxwell Ave., at Cosburn), at 1 p.m., followed by a Service at 2 p.m. Interment St. James Cemetery. After a long battle with diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, on January 24, 2005 at Kensington Gardens, Toronto. Survived by dear daughter Eva KATO and her partner Kenneth DAWE. Loving aunt of Larry KARDOS and family (Allegany, New York,) Dr. Thomas KARDOS and family (San Antonio, Texas,) and Dr. Linda ROBINS and family (Stuart, Florida). Elizabeth will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law Juanita KARDOS, and by cousin Janos PALOTAS and his wife Eva (Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida), their son Gabor and his family, and by her lifelong friend Ibi HOLZMAN (née SPRINGER) (Montreal.) Predeceased by her husband Stephen KATO (1962,) brothers Miklos KARDOS (Budapest, Hungary) and Dr. George KARDOS (Olean, New York) and by parents Menyhert KARDOS (Olean, New York) and Henriette KARDOS (née FISCH) (Budapest, Hungary). Elizabeth was born in Budapest in 1919 and brought up in a happy Jewish home. When Nazi Law was declared in Hungary, Elizabeth and her family were forced to wear a yellow star and live in a house marked with a Mogen David in the Jewish Ghetto. Prior to the liberation of Budapest, her sweetheart, Stephen KATO, arranged for false identification papers for Elizabeth and her family, enabling the entire family (except brother Miklos) to escape just hours before the residents were gathered and deported to Nazi extermination camps. After the war, Elizabeth and Stephen got married and lived, with their daughter Eva, in Soviet-occupied Budapest. During the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, the family escaped to Vienna, and later, with the help of her brother George (who lived in the United States), immigrated to Niagara Falls, Canada. For survival in the new country it was necessary for Elizabeth to learn English and a new trade. She studied and graduated as a beautician and opened a small hairdressing salon. After her husband Stephen's death, Elizabeth bought two houses to run as rooming houses in addition to her beauty business. With granite strength, courage, and good humour, she forged a new life for herself and her daughter in a strange culture under trying circumstances. Private cremation.
