HODD, Jack Lorne
Peacefully after a brief illness, on October 6, 2005 at the age of 91, the music of life ended for Jack HODD. Beloved husband for 58 years of the late Isabel (SKINNER) and father of Sylvia JOHNSTONE (Don McMILLAN) and Stephen HODD (Linda). Jack was very proud of and loved by his six grandchildren Craig, Paul (Gaile), Libby (Jeff), Alison (Rob), Andrew (Trecia) and Jonathan and seven great-grandchildren. Jack had a special bond with his many nieces and nephews. Jack was known in Hamilton music circles as an organist and music director at several churches over an eight decade career, including Westdale United Church and most recently at St. Giles United Church. He retired from the Otis Elevator Company in 1974 and focused on composing music, particularly sacred, of which several were published and many more performed locally. Jack was respected for his skill as an accompanist and leaves a legacy of music and legions of Friends from the choirs and churches of which he was a part. If desired, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to The Salvation Army. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will take place at St. Giles United Church, Main Street East at Holton Avenue, Hamilton (905-549-3068) on Wednesday, October 12 at 3 p.m. with a reception to follow. Jack served on Malahide Township Council for many years and also served as Reeve. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman and an original member of Sunnyside Hunt Camp. In retirement he enjoyed woodworking and creating lawn ornaments. Friends may call at the H.A. Quietly, in Kitchener, Ontario, at the age of 85, on Monday November 28, 2005. John is survived by his wife and companion of 62 years Mary Fraser HODDER, sons Richard and Steven, daughters-in-law Margo TAKEDA and Valerie REED and grandchildren Matthew, Tanis and Jordyn HODDER. John came into the world with one name and left with another. Adopted soon after birth in 1920 by C. Victor HODDER, O.B.E. and Kathleen Telford HODDER, John, or Jack to many Friends, was raised in Toronto and distinguished himself as a fine athlete at Ridley and Upper Canada Colleges and North Toronto Collegiate. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and earned his wings in 1941. After coastal defence duties during the war, surviving several crashes in peacetime and duty as a test pilot, John left the Royal Canadian Air Force to enter private business in 1956. A lifelong stamp collector, he retired in the late 1980's to work on his collection and to pursue his interests in needlepoint and painting. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Mary JACKSON, Dr. Eric HENTSCHEL and the nursing staff in the Chest Unit at Saint Mary's Hospital. His cremains will be interred in the family plot, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.

Killers hurt in struggle, police say

Police are looking for two injured assailants in connection with a double homicide.
On Friday at about 9: 15 p.m., Justin HODGE, 20 and Damian MUIRHEAD, 22, of Toronto were shot inside Mr. HODGE's third-floor apartment at 180 Niagara St.
Two men, wearing bandana masks, had struggled with the victims just inside the apartment door, Detective Sergeant Ken TAILOR/TAYLOR of the homicide squad said yesterday.
When it seemed like Mr. HODGE and Mr. MUIRHEAD were winning the struggle, the masked men shot them, police said.
An autopsy conducted Sunday concluded the two victims were in a fight, and police said that one of the dead had a broken knuckle.
Police recovered two bandanas in the rear laneway of the apartment and are working to link these to the attackers. A watch, which police said may belong to one of the men being sought, was also recovered.
Police say there was no sign that the attackers forced their way in.
They▼ say that Mr. MUIRHEAD had stopped by Mr. HODGE's apartment to pick up a cellphone and happened to be in the room when the assailants arrived. He tried to help his friend when things started to go wrong, police said.
One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene. The other died at St. Michael's Hospital as a result of gunshot wounds.
Three witnesses, all Friends of Mr. HODGE, were on the balcony when the assailants arrived, police said. Two have come forward on their own and police are appealing to the third witness to do the same.
Det. Sgt. TAILOR/TAYLOR said that Mr. HODGE was known to be a drug dealer. "I believe the suspects were trying to rob him of his drugs and money," he said. Police found marijuana and ecstasy inside the apartment.

It took about two minutes.
A violent dispute. Gunfire. One man lies dead on the apartment's living room floor, his friend bleeding to death in the kitchen.
Two men flee, losing their dark blue and white bandanas in a laneway behind the apartment building.
It was Friday night, about 9: 30. On the balcony of the third-floor Niagara St. apartment, three other people had been smoking. They saw the fight begin and witnessed one of their Friends take a gunshot to the chest.
One man on the balcony ran out of the apartment to a nearby stairwell.
Another called 911 from his cellphone but realized he didn't know the address.
He too left the apartment, panicking, banging on doors as he ran down the hall, trying to find someone who could tell him the address.
The third man stayed in the apartment with his Friends: Justin HODGE, 20, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, and Damian MUIRHEAD, 22, who had been shot in the neck.
MUIRHEAD died in hospital.
"We believe that the motive for the murders is robbery," Toronto police homicide Det. Sgt. Ken TAILOR/TAYLOR said at a news conference yesterday. "It is quite possible... the suspects believed that they may have been able to go into that apartment to get some drugs and/or money."
The suspects wore bandanas over their faces, and police don't have detailed descriptions of them. Police have spoken to two of the men on the balcony and are hoping to hear from the third. TAILOR/TAYLOR stressed that investigators do not believe he was involved in the slayings, but he might be able to provide valuable information.
Bandanas and a silver watch found in a nearby laneway are being tested for DNA. TAILOR/TAYLOR said he is hopeful those tests will help track down the killers.
TAILOR/TAYLOR said police found some marijuana and ecstasy inside the apartment: No. 313 at 180 Niagara St. Although both victims had had some minor dealings with police, TAILOR/TAYLOR said neither were part of a gang.
HODGE, an aspiring hip-hop artist who was working on an album, had an amazing sense of humour, said his sister Sara in an interview.
"He was a clown. He always had something funny to say. He was an intelligent boy with a vast vocabulary," she said.
Sara HODGE, 22, visited her brother almost every day, she said, and had been at the apartment that night.
"I left early, but I don't really know why."
She described her younger brother as handsome and popular.
"He did not have one enemy. He was my best friend, my other half. I am lost without him. We told each other we loved each other. We laughed together. We cried together," she said through tears.
HODGE said she introduced her brother and MUIRHEAD about six or seven years ago. For several years, she dated MUIRHEAD and they all lived together.
"He was a good guy, a happy guy," she said. "He always had a kind word to say... Damian, he wanted to make something of himself, but he wasn't sure how to get there."
MUIRHEAD had been living in a basement apartment at his aunt's North York house.
Dee Dee SCRUTON said her nephew was outgoing and popular.
"Damian had all kinds of Friends, everywhere he went, everybody loved Damian," she said, adding, "They were both good kids, kind-hearted."
Yesterday, both families were making funeral arrangements.
"I'm holding it together because that's what Damian would want," SCRUTON said. "He loved and respected me and I loved and respected him. He was my friend first, my nephew second. That's what he said, we were Friends. I just got to hold it together for him."
HODGE lived with his friend Steve MADISON at the 62-unit low-rise Niagara Neighbourhood Cooperative in King West village, which has many upscale condominiums, trendy restaurants and bars.
MADISON was at work the night of the shooting.
MUIRHEAD had stopped in for a visit with his friend some time before 9: 30 p.m., when at least two men entered the apartment.
Three other men dropped in to say hello and to pick up a cellphone from MUIRHEAD. Those three -- who were on the balcony at the time of the deadly fight -- hadn't planned on staying.
"Justin was the target," TAILOR/TAYLOR said. The suspects may have known him.
The▲ homicide officer believes MUIRHEAD was shot after coming to the aid of his friend.
The fight was short, but violent, TAILOR/TAYLOR said, noting both dead men had a number of injuries. MUIRHEAD, he noted, broke one knuckle in the melee.
"It is quite evident that both deceased were involved in quite a violent fight just prior to their deaths. It is my belief that one or both suspects are injured as a result of this fight," TAILOR/TAYLOR said.
Two of the three men on the balcony spoke with police, providing a lot of detail about how the fight broke out. TAILOR/TAYLOR said police have yet to talk to the third man who was on the balcony that night.
"This witness was a friend of Justin's," TAILOR/TAYLOR said.
"It appeared that he had called Justin on his cellular phone just prior to the murder and Justin let this person into the apartment."
He asked that the man call homicide detectives.
"I know you knew my brother," HODGE said of the witness. "You were probably scared, probably still scared. It is very important that you do come forward and give whatever information you have. Two people are gone and many more are hurting."

The family is saddened to announce the peaceful passage of Frederick Joseph HODGE on Friday, March 4, 2005, in his 94th year, from Southlake Hospital in Newmarket. Born on November 28, 1910 in Buffalo, New York, he and his mother, Margaret Buckley HODGE, and two sisters, Hazel and Mildred, moved to Mt. Forest, Ontario in 1912. He attended Toronto Normal School in 1929 and taught at Saint Mary's School in Mt. Forest, St. Jerome's College and Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate where he taught English, French, and Business before becoming a provincial school inspector. He served York County Separate Schools as its first Director of Education and retired in 1975. Thereafter he became a part of a winter community in Ft. Pierce, Florida, and lived with his daughter, Margaret, and her husband, Donald SCHWAB, during the summers with many excursions to the family cottage on Go Home Lake. His death was preceded by a short illness. His beloved wife, Mary Adeline (Marie) KEAIS from Mt. Forest, predeceased him in 1975. He will be greatly missed by his two children, Margaret SCHWAB and Jerold HODGE, four grandchildren, Kathie SIMONS, David HODGE, Mark▲ SCHWAB, and Neil SCHWAB, and two great-grandchildren, Cole SIMONS, and Troy SCHWAB, along with many other relatives and Friends. Loved grandfather of Candice COLE of Algrove, British Columbia, Domonique DOMINGO (Angelito) of Bellingham, Washington, Kristy LEACH/LEECH/LEITCH (James RAMCHUK) of Calgary, Nicolette COLE (Bradley HUNTER) of London and great-grandfather of four. Dear brother of Jean BARNES (Ray) of Goderich and Helen SMITH of Strathroy.
