Police lay murder charge
Slashed tires and a broken window were found at the home of a slain woman.
By John HERBERT, Free Press Reporter
A young London woman is dead and a London man she knew has been charged with murder in the city's first homicide of the year. Police did not reveal the identity of the woman, who was found dead at 4: 15 a.m. yesterday at her home at 875 Thistledown Way, Unit 5.
But neighbours say the body was that of Laura WILSON, a woman in her early 20s who had recently left her boyfriend.
James William VANDERSANDEN, 23, of 485 Castlegrove Blvd., is charged with first-degree murder, break and enter, criminal harassment, mischief under $5,000 and assault with a weapon.
Police would not say what their relationship was but did confirm they knew each other.
"They had an association," said Det. Sgt. John PARE.
Police would not identify the woman until after an autopsy was completed.
"We spoke to her family, but we can't release the name. It's got to be done the proper way," PARÉ said.
Police would not say what weapon was used.
A shocked neighbour said Wilson lived alone in her mother's condo in the quiet, mostly-seniors Rembrandt Heights condominium complex, just west of the intersection of Wonderland and Sarnia roads.
WILSON had been living with a boyfriend, but recently returned to her mother's place, the neighbour said.
The condo is for sale and WILSON's mother and a younger sister had already moved out, the neighbour said.
WILSON was planning to live in the condo until it was sold, then move in with her mother, she said.
Police confirmed the dead woman was living alone.
But another woman was in the condo at the time of the attack, PARÉ said.
She suffered knife wounds and bleeding, fled the condo and called police from a neighbour's place, police said.
VANDERSANDEN was arrested about 5 a.m. after a short foot chase that ended near the London Aquatic Centre, in the backyard of a home on Blue Forest Place.
Yesterday morning, a silver Chrysler Sebring was parked in front of the condo, with three of its tires slashed.
A large front window near the entrance to the condo was smashed.
"I'm very shocked. She was a very nice woman," said neighbour Dave ROBERTS.
"I heard ambulances about 4: 30 in the morning, but I never heard any noise until then. I looked out the window and all the police were here."
"Nothing like this happens around here," added shocked neighbour Michael GIBBONS.
There were five homicides in London last year.
The most recent victim was William Gordon (Bill) SMITH, who was found face down in gravel outside his apartment at 206 Clarence St. near Simcoe Street November 16.

In loving memory of my Husband and Best Friend and Our Dad and Grandpa, who passed away 15 years ago.
Another year has passed without you. We sit at the Lake, watch the boats and think of what should be and how proud you would be taking your grandchildren Josh, Erin, Jordan, Abby, Brieanna and Austin in your boat riding beside you. Our hearts will ache Herbie and the secret tears still flow. So much has happened since you have been gone for fifteen years. Your smiles, your laughter and all the things you did for Family and Friends are such beautiful memories. Today, instead of accepting a rose tonight from you, I will lay one at your grave. We all Love and miss you so much. You are forever in our hearts.

HERINGER, Joseph
Succumbed on December 11th 2005 following a long and debilitating brain disease. Will be dearly missed by his wife Agnes, daughters Monica and Naomi, son-in-laws Roy and Corey, and his six grandchildren. Joe was born in 1934 in Budapest, Hungary. In 1956, when the Soviets invaded, Joe escaped to Vienna the story of which became family lore. While at the refugee camp in Vienna, he met and fell in love with Agnes STRAUBER, who would become his wife and life-long soul mate. Together they journeyed to Venezuela, one of the few countries that would accept Hungarian immigrants. Joe and Agnes arrived in Caracas with no money, few possessions, no Spanish and without Friends or family. From such humble beginnings Joe and Agnes started their lives together. Daughter Monica was born several years later and in 1963 Joe's dream was realized when they moved to Canada. Starting over again they settled in Montreal, gave birth to another daughter Naomi, and raised their young family. In 1977 the family relocated once again, this time to Toronto. During their almost 30 years in Toronto they would see both daughters marry and give them grandchildren. They would also purchase a cottage on Anstruther Lake, which gave them many years of pleasure. Joe was his happiest while at the cottage, puttering around fixing things, going for canoe rides and hikes in the summer, and cross country skiing in the winter. Joe, who never learned how to cook, became a master at the barbeque. He was a voracious reader, opera lover and enjoyed making his own wine. He took an active interest in current events, played a mean game of bridge and scrabble, and completed the chess and bridge newspaper puzzles daily. He was a passionate traveler who loved pouring over maps and guidebooks. When Joe was only 58 and looking forward to an early retirement spent at the cottage, he was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia that would ultimately take his life 13 years later. The family would like to express their gratitude to Cummer Lodge, whose nurses and staff cared for Joe during the last 8 years of his life. A private memorial service will be held for family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cummer Lodge at 205 Cummer Avenue, North York Ontario, M2M 2E8, 416-392-9500.
