Her 75 year legacy includes 10 grandchildren, Stephen, Christopher and Gregory VANDENHEUVEL, Jennifer and Tracy JONES, Jackie and Shannon KALOCZI and Jason, Michael and Rachel YARC. Beloved wife of the late Henry Edward " Harry" BANKS and dearly loved mother of Carol and her husband Robert HELMER of Sparta, Marilyn and her husband Leonard KALIN of Woodstock and John and his wife Sharyn BANKS of Toronto. Dear sister of Agnes CHALK of Aylmer and Ruth NEWLAND of Tillsonburg. Sadly missed by 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mary was born in Calton on December 2, 1915, the daughter of the late Norman and Florence (LIDDLE) CHALK. She has lived in Saint Thomas since 1989 and formerly of London for over 60 years. She was a retired Registered Nurse at Vicitoria Hospital. She was of the Baptist Faith. A private family service will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas on Tuesday. Interment to follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. No public visitation. So deeply beloved mother of Valerie Godsoe JENNINGS, Peter▼ (Shelagh,▼) Jane▼ (Tony FERREIRA) and sadly predeceased Gerald Jr. (Dale,) and the devoted wife of J. Gerald GODSOE, LL.D; CBE (deceased). She was also the loving and cherished grandmother of Craig (Charles MELANSON), Eden (Jim KING), Cynthia (Eric PITT), Suzanne, Stacey (Leif HELMER), Laura, and Derek DELOST and the proud greatgrandmother of Jonas PITT and Rowan HELMER. Margaret▼ GODSOE and her family are deeply grateful to all others who cared for and supported her - especially Hyacinth POWELL, with her for 24 years. 'Marg' GODSOE will forever be loved and remembered for her generous heart, incredible strength, enthusiasm, wit and brilliant mind. Such an inspiration to ever yone she met, she graduated with highest honors from Dalhousie University at age 18, then taught Mathematics in Sydney, Nova Scotia and was later awarded an LL.D. by Dalhousie. In 1932 she married her one and only love, 'Gerry' GODSOE and soon after they moved to Toronto and raised their four children. With an intense passion for life and art, she was highly respected as a promoter, collector and philanthropist for Canadian Art. She was a founding member of the Art Gallery of Ontario Women's Committee and a Trustee and also an early catalyst and President of Toronto's Junior League. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A. W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 3 - 5 and 7 - 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18. Special and loving brother-in-law and uncle to Fern and Willow HELMER. Bill is predeceased by his parents Hazel and George, and his brothers George and Frank. He is survived by his sisters Fuss JAROTT and Hap KELSEY, as well as many nieces and nephews. Bill was a graduate of the University of Toronto and a professional engineer. He was President of Barber Construction and a longtime member of the Rotary Club. With respect to Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place. HELMS, Gabriele
Born May 15, 1966 in Dortmund, Germany. Died December 31, 2004 in Vancouver. Survived by her husband Bob SHORE and daughter Hana Gabriele HELMS- SHORE, born at St. Paul's Hospital on December 29, 2004; her parents Karl-Heinz and Marlies HELMS of Holzwickede, Germany; her brother Michael HELMS of Dortmund, Germany; and many Friends and colleagues in Canada, Germany, and around the world. Gabi received her Masters degree in English from the University of Cologne and her PhD. in Canadian Literature from The University of British Columbia. She taught in the Department of English at Simon Fraser University and recently realized her dream, becoming an Assistant Professor of English at University of British Columbia. Dr. HELMS was an exceptional teacher and scholar, and made important contributions to the fields of Life Writing and Canadian Literature. Gabi found great comfort and Friendship as a member of a support group through the British Columbia Cancer Agency and her relationships there inspired her to lead the organization of a groundbreaking national event titled, 'The Young and the Breastless: a Networking Event for Young Women with Breast Cancer.' Held at University of British Columbia in May 2004, this event, the first of its kind in the country, drew participants from across Canada. Gabi was also on the Board of Directors for The Canadian Breast Cancer Network which is based in Ottawa. Her family would like to thank the caring nurses and doctors at St. Paul's Hospital and the British Columbia Cancer Agency, especially Dr. Roberta Pauls and Dr. Cicely Bryce. Gabi always thought of others first, and ultimately chose her daughter's life over her own. Breast cancer took her far too early and she will be profoundly missed. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, January 14th, 2005 at 6pm at the Peter Wall Institute, located inside the Koerner University Centre at University of British Columbia. The address is 6331 Crescent Road (tel: 604-822-4782). In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations made in Gabi's memory to the British Columbia Cancer Agency.
