Passed away peacefully on November 3rd, 2005, in West Vancouver,
British Columbia. Born in Brampton, Ontario, October 21st, 1929,
the son of Jim and Allene
SMITH, he was the fourth of four boys,
three of whom, Neil, Malcolm and Duncan, predeceased him. After
attending University College at the University of Toronto, where
he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, Ian graduated
from Osgoode Hall and practised law with his friend Earl
BROWN.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, canoeing and fishing,
and was a reserve officer in the 48th Highlanders in Toronto.
Later, he went into business at Brookdale Kingsway Nursery, Bowmanville,
Ontario and
at Columbia Nursery, Chilliwack, British Columbia,
also participating in various property development projects.
He and his family moved to Vancouver in 1970. There, he spent
time building two 52-foot cabin cruisers, one of which went to
a local children's charity. Ian was an active member of the Reform
Party of Canada. Sadly, his final years were overshadowed by
the death of his eldest son, Malcolm Wallace

onset of a nerve disease, peripheral neuropathy. He is survived
by his loving wife

There is great comfort, however, in knowing she is now with her
beloved husband, Fred. Mary was a kind and loving Nana (Nanabanana)
to all of her 10 grandchildren: Cathy (Jim), Ron, Dan, Patti
(Jamie), Richard, Rob (Laura), Randy, Michael (Vivian), Debbie
and Linda. Her many great-grandchildren were also fortunate enough
to have known their wonderful "Great Nana/Nanny". Mary was a
very strong, yet gentle woman who touched many lives during her
93 years. From family to Friends and acquaintances, it was always
a pleasure to be with her. We all will certainly miss that pleasure.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Skinner and Middlebrook
Ltd., 128 Lakeshore Rd. E. (1 block west of Hurontario St.),

Peacefully, in his 93rd year, at Picton, Ontario, with his son
Rob and daughter-in-law Nancy at his bedside, on September 15,
2005. Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and
brother-in-law. Predeceased by his loving wife and walking companion,
Irene (LONEY) and his parents, Percy Wilfrid and Lottie May
(GOLDING)
of Vancouver, and more recently, his sisters-in-law, Florence
HASTED,
Bolton,
Ontario, and Vera
McKENZIE, Oliphant, Ontario.
Dick was born and raised in Calgary and subsequently graduated
from the University of Alberta, Edmonton. After articling in
Calgary and while practicing law in London, Ontario, he met and
married Irene in 1940. They moved to Ottawa where Dick went to
work for the Department of Munitions and Supply from 1940 through
1944. He was General Manager of the Canadian Construction Association,
1945 to 1955, but in late 1950 he was loaned to the Canadian
Government as President of the newly formed Crown Agency, Defence
Construction (1951) Limited, which he headed until 1963. Dick
was then appointed Executive Vice President, then President,
of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, Toronto, and
latterly, added the position of Chair, Canadian Construction
Management Institute, Toronto, until his retirement in 1978.
Dick and Irene enjoyed their retirement years with family and
Friends in Oliphant and Toronto. Dick will be remembered as an
innovative builder, consummate administrator, artful conciliator,
the vanguard of the family, a man of wit and good taste, ever
the gracious host. And throughout his life: "always a gentleman".
Funeral arrangements entrusted to George Funeral Home, Wiarton,
Ontario (1-866-847-7702). Dick was buried at Oxenden Cemetery,
Wiarton, on September 17, 2005. To celebrate his life, you may
