SMITH, Ian Holt
Passed away peacefully on November 3rd, 2005, in West Vancouver, British Columbia. Born in Brampton, Ontario, October 21st, 1929, the son of Jim and Allene SMITH, he was the fourth of four boys, three of whom, Neil, Malcolm and Duncan, predeceased him. After attending University College at the University of Toronto, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, Ian graduated from Osgoode Hall and practised law with his friend Earl BROWN. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, canoeing and fishing, and was a reserve officer in the 48th Highlanders in Toronto. Later, he went into business at Brookdale Kingsway Nursery, Bowmanville, Ontario and at Columbia Nursery, Chilliwack, British Columbia, also participating in various property development projects. He and his family moved to Vancouver in 1970. There, he spent time building two 52-foot cabin cruisers, one of which went to a local children's charity. Ian was an active member of the Reform Party of Canada. Sadly, his final years were overshadowed by the death of his eldest son, Malcolm Wallace SMITH, and by the onset of a nerve disease, peripheral neuropathy. He is survived by his loving wife Julia Jane (LEACH/LEECH/LEITCH) SMITH, son Douglas James and daughter Lorna Mary, sisters-in-law Anne SMITH and Mona HASLETT, and numerous nieces and nephews. At Ian's request, there has been no funeral service, and cremation has already taken place through the Hollyburn Funeral Home, 1807 Marine Drive, West Vancouver.
