Quiet matriarch kept
GRETZKYs together
Hundreds of players, fans and strangers attend funeral of 'a
great lady'
By Tara BRAUTIGAM, Canadian Press, Friday, December 23, 2005,
Page S3
Brantford, Ontario -- Against a life full of triumph, Wayne
GRETZKY
mourned one of his greatest losses yesterday, bidding farewell
to the quiet matriarch who kept his celebrated family together.
"People in Canada knew her as a hockey mother, but we knew her
as just a wonderful person,"
GRETZKY said, holding back tears
in a touching eulogy to his mother, Phyllis.
The Anglican funeral service drew hundreds of players, fans and
strangers to this southwestern Ontario city of about 90,000 people.
Phyllis, a mother of five and grandmother of 13, was a beacon
her children sought in times of need, the 44-year-old hockey
icon said.
"If we got in trouble and needed to get out of trouble, we went
to our mother,"
GRETZKY said.
"She cherished the moments she had, not only with her kids, but
with her grandchildren. Her eyes used to light up each and every
day if she got a phone call from a grandchild, a note, a letter
or a gift."
As he spoke to the crowd, a few of whom were brought to tears,
GRETZKY looked around at the packed pews.
"We know our mother now is not in pain," said
GRETZKY, the first-born
son. "She's a tough lady that endured a lot over the last six
months physically. She's pain-free now."
Phyllis, 64, died on Monday in hospital. Her children were with
her at the end of her year-long battle with lung cancer.
GRETZKY's father, 67-year-old Walter, stood up and hugged his
son after the eulogy.
Phyllis's legacy of love for her family was as an example for
all to follow, Archdeacon Jim
SUTTON said.
"Thank you, God, for giving us people like Phyllis to show us
that it's possible to live that way,"
SUTTON said.
A number of hockey heavyweights, including National Hockey League
commissioner Gary Bettman and hockey superstar Paul Coffey, attended
the service at the Grace Anglican Church.
The service ended with Sarah McLachlan's song I Will Remember
You and a video montage of family highlights -- clips depicting
Phyllis's time as a newlywed and as a proud mother clinging to
Wayne's arm at his wedding.
Escorted by his wife, Janet,
GRETZKY and the rest of his family
followed Phyllis's casket, draped in a white shawl, to its burial.
"It was a great service for a great lady," former
GRETZKY teammate
Shayne Corson said afterward as church bells rang.
"What else can you say on a tough day like today? It's a sad
day for everybody, but they're a strong family, a close family.
They'll get through it all."
The mayor of Brantford, a city where
GRETZKY's name graces hockey
arenas and flags flew at half-mast yesterday, called it a dark
day.
"This whole city is in mourning," Mike
HANCOCK said. "We all
feel we lost a family member."
Phyllis will continue to be looked up to by generations of hockey
mothers and National Hockey League hopefuls lacing up skates
on frigid Saturday mornings, Hockey Canada president Bob
NICHOLSON
said.
"Moms are a huge part of the game of hockey,"
NICHOLSON said.
"There's a lot of moms that take their kids to the rinks and
make sure they get up on time, and Phyllis is sort of the ideal
mom in this country."
GRETZKY, the executive director of the Canadian Olympic hockey
team, wasn't in Vancouver on Wednesday for the announcement of
the lineup that will play in Turin, but he will resume his duties
with the team in January,
NICHOLSON said.
The National Hockey League's career leading scorer also put his
coaching career with the Phoenix Coyotes on hold last week after
his mother's health took a downturn.
