I Remember -- Brereton
GREENHOUS
By John R.
GRODZINSKI,
Wednesday,
May 18, 2005, Page S7
Major
John
R.
GRODZINSKI of the Royal Military College in Kingston,
Ontario, writes about Brereton
GREENHOUS, whose obituary appeared
on May 14.
I first met him in 1990. "Ben" was in the staff lounge, holding
what appeared to be court. His presence dominated the room, yet
the warmth of his character was apparent in his jovial smile
and wit. Noticing me as a stranger to the place, he invited me
over and asked what I was working on. Having enjoyed several
of his books, such interest by an accomplished historian was
overwhelming. Without hesitation, he immediately offered me access
to his records.
Whenever we met again, he always showed that same interest, offering
sage advice and lots of encouragement. To Ben, historians had
to work hard, unearthing facts and questioning every detail.
He also made history fun, perhaps best summed up in his assessment
on whether the origins of an aspect of a particular regiment's
heritage was true or not. Ben concluded the story to be based
more in folklore than fact, writing that it was likely "developed
imperceptibly over a series of late night sessions in the mess
conceived over a whisky and soda, born of a good claret, and
weaned on port, so to speak."

HALL,

DORWARD)
On March 29, 2005 after a separation of 17 years, Mom quietly
slipped away to rejoin George Sr., her husband of 55 years. She
was 94 years old. We remember her great apple pies, Christmas
mornings that were a time of magic for her kids and her splendid
needlework, dolls clothing and jewelry. But most of all we remember
how hard she worked for her family and how she always put them
first.
Thanks Mom, we love you and miss you.
Good-bye Mom, good-bye Dad.
Good-bye Gramma and Poppa.
Good-bye "Amazing Grace".

GREENBERG,
Leonard
Herman B.Sc., M.Sc., PhD, and professor emeritus
The physics community lost a respected long time member and teacher
on November 10, 2005. Len
GREENBERG taught in the physics department
at the University of Regina for 38 years, including 5 years as
department head, retiring in 1990. Co-workers recall him as an
extremely good physicist, instrumental in bringing the small
department recognition as one of the best in Canada in the field
of sub-atomic physics. Len's forte was writing, however, and
his two books, "Discovery in Physics for Scientists and Engineers"
and "Physics for Biology and Pre-med Students" have been called
literature as well as science, and were translated into several
languages. In his early career, Len was deeply involved in the
development of the cobalt bomb for radiation in cancer therapy
at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and he worked
for many years at the Allan Blair Memorial Clinic in Regina.
Although not an astronomer, Len developed and taught the first
astronomy classes at the University of Regina.
Len was born on October 5, 1925 in Calgary, Alberta, one of four
children of Anna and Oscar, who had emigrated from Sweden. Len
obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Alberta and
PhD from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon in the mid-1950s.
He moved to Regina in 1952, and lived there until 1972, when
he moved to the village of Silton. Summers were spent on Kenderdine
Island in Lac La Ronge, where Len found a retreat and idyllic
environment for his writing.
Len was predeceased by his parents, his sister Evelyn and his
brother George. Len will be sadly missed by Ann, his wife of
32 years. Len will also be missed by his sister Bernice
CRAIG
(Cameron) of Cranbrook, British Columbia and his first wife Joyce
HENDERSON of Red Deer, Alberta. Len was an inspiration to his
children Lynnea
WILLIAMS
(Bruce) of Regina, Pauline
WATSON (Bob)
of Oakville, Ontario, Sherrill
BARKER
(John) of Red Deer, Alberta,
David GRONBERG of Regina, Ian
GREENBERG
(Sue) of Vancouver, Dan
McKAY of Edmonton, Stephen
McKERRACHER
(Donna) of Drake, Saskatchewan.
Len also leaves thirteen grandchildren: Notanee and Roshi (Regina),
Kevin and Andrea (Oakville), Natasha and Nathan (Red Deer), Sarah
(Scarborough), Chelsea, Eliza and Matthew (Victoria), Ayla, Sterling
and Milan, and three great grandchildren. Len is already deeply
missed by his dogs Suzy and Gus.
The funeral will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, Regina, at
1: 30 on Tuesday November 15. In lieu of flowers, donations can
be made to a bursary to be set up in his name, directed to the
University of Regina, External Relations, 210 North Residence,

PRINCE,
Walter
Harry, Q.C.L.L.D.
In his 79th Year. Passed away peacefully at home on November
27, 2005 showing amazing strength and dignity during his challenge
with cancer.
Walter is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 49
yrs. Janet, and their children Judith and Dr. Ross
WALKER of
Kingston and Stewart and Mary
(GRONDIN)
PRINCE of Windsor. Dear
"Grandad" to Andrew, Emily and Fraser Walker and Matthew and
Jack PRINCE.
Brother of Dr. Jack
PRINCE and wife
Elaine of Windsor,
and brother-in-law of Marjory and John ("Jack")
CRANFORD of Toronto.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, Walter had a distinguished and successful
50 year career in law. After attending Kennedy Collegiate he
graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1950, and
was called to the bar in 1955 as a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law
School. He began his career in Windsor as an associate with the
firm Fraser and McPherson. In 1965, a new partnership, McPherson,
Prince and Geddes was formed. Walter was appointed Queens Council
in 1969. He was the senior partner with McPherson, Prince and
Geddes when the firm merged with Mousseau Deluca in 2001. That
year he received the designation of "Certified Specialist in
Estate and Trust Laws" by the Law Society of Upper Canada. Most
recently (April 2005) he received a Doctor of Laws honorary degree
from Assumption University in Windsor.
Walter has been Chairman of the Windsor Planning Board, Chairman
of the Windsor- Essex County Development Commision, Chairman
of the Windsor Estate Planning Commision, Chairman of the Guaranty
Trust/Central Trust Advisory Board and Chairman of the Leamington
Police Commision. He was also a member and past President of
the Essex County Law Association, member of the Canadian Bar
Association and member of the Canadian Tax Foundation. As President
of the Windsor Young Men's Christian Association and Vice-President
of the National Council of Young Men's Christian Association
Canada, he received the Canadian Young Men's Christian Association
"Fellowship of Honour Citation" as presented in Ottawa by the
then Canadian Governor General in 1984. He was also a member
of the Essex-Scottish Veterans Association and member/Past-President
of the Windsor Club.
As devoted and dedicated Walter was to his career, he was equally,
if not more devoted and loving to his family. He valued Friendships
and respected colleagues. Perhaps his greatest joy was to spend
time with his family and Friends at "the cottage" on Lake Huron
in north Oliphant, Ontario. The multi-purpose "boathouse" was
home to his summer office and woodworking shop he so treasured.
The Memorial Service will be held at Riverside United Church,
881 Glidden Avenue, Windsor, Ontario on Friday, December 2, 2005
at 11am. Reception and Visitation following. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Hospice of Windsor.
