Man on oxygen tank dies after explosion
Was smoking in his apartment
Police say victim pulled fire alarm

A 57-year-old Mississauga man was killed yesterday morning after the oxygen tank he was hooked up to in his Bloor St. apartment ignited and exploded while he smoked a cigarette.
The victim, David GRIGHTMIRE, was hooked up to the oxygen tank because he had emphysema, said his younger sister Margaret FITZGERALD, who lived with her brother along with another sister, Betty WILLIAMS.
Neither FITZGERALD nor WILLIAMS was home at the time of the explosion.
Mississauga fire officials are still investigating the exact cause of the blast.
An autopsy yesterday revealed GRIGHTMIRE, a father of one son, died from lung failure.
Peel Region police said GRIGHTMIRE managed to pull the fire alarm after the explosion, alerting tenants to evacuate the building.
"Even when he was dying, he was thinking about saving other people," said FITZGERALD.
"He was a good man right to the end."
Mississauga firefighters and Peel paramedics were called to the apartment building near Havenwood Dr. around 9: 30 a.m. following a number of minor explosions on the sixth floor.
A firefighter discovered GRIGHTMIRE without vital signs inside his sixth floor unit.
He was rushed to Trillium Health Centre and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Fire crews remained on scene for several hours trying to clear smoke from the building.
GRIGHTMIRE, a security guard and Mississauga resident for 40 years, was a member and past master of the Mississauga Masonic Lodge 524 in Port Credit.
His favourite hobbies were reading and doing crossword puzzles, said older brother Thomas GRIGHTMIRE.
GRIGHTMIRE's death should serve as a reminder to oxygen-tank users to be careful, the elder GRIGHTMIRE said.
Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care said people on an oxygen system "must take precautions because oxygen aids combustion."
The provincial government warns oxygen users to keep oxygen systems away from sources of heat or open flame and not to smoke or let anyone else smoke in the area where they use oxygen.

Mr. Sylvio LABELLE passed away on October 12, 2005 at Saint Mary's on the Lake Hospital, Kingston, Ontario. in his 66th year following a stoic battle with cancer. Sylvio is deeply missed but forever loved by his soul mate of 39 years Phyllis HOLLETT. He will always be cherished by his children Faye FLETCHER (Dennis,) Vanessa NEVEN (Jeremy) and by his loving son Marc (Angela) by whom he predeceased. He will always be the loving poppy to his 7 grandchildren Dylan, Kaitlyn, Beaux, Rielly, Jayden, Ellija, and Sydney. He will be eternally in the hearts of his sisters Gabrielle CORRIVEAU, Rita DIGNARD, Juilette GRIGNON, Rejeanne MARTEL, Alice LAVALLEE (Jerome) and his brother Andre LABELLE (Jackie) as well as his sisters-in-law Cecile LABELLE and Sylvia DESJARDINS, brother-in-law Phil CÔTÉ and his many nieces, nephews, relatives and dear Friends. Sylvio was the youngest of 13, born September 11, 1939 to the late Celima and Elzear LABELLE. His life was enriched by his experience in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Cornwall Police Force and Enbridge (Interprovincial Pipeline) until his retirement in 1999. Sylvio was deeply proud of his family and took great joy in the lives of his many relatives and Friends. Although French Canadian, Sylvio was a true "screeched in" Newfoundlander whose fondness for his in-laws and their Joi de Vie resonated with him. A special Memorial Service for Sylvio will be held on October 22, 2005 at Murphy's Inn, 917 Second Street, West Cornwall, Ontario. from 10: 00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (with special tributes at 11 a.m.). It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Honourable Louis J. ROBICHAUD, P.C., C.C., O.N.B., Q.C., Commander of the Legion of Honor, former Senator of Canada and former Premier of New Brunswick. He passed away Thursday January 6, 2005 at Stella Maris-de-Kent Hospital at the age of 79 years. Born October 21, 1925 in Saint Antoine-de-Kent, he was the son of the late Amedée ROBICHAUD and Eugénie 'Annie' RICHARD. A long-time, dedicated volunteer with West Ferris Ladies Recreation and the West Ferris Minor Hockey Association, Betty will be fondly remembered by many Friends. She will also be deeply missed by her family: her children Marc (and Gillian) of North Bay, André (and Michelle) of Montréal, and Lise BRODEUR of Morrisburg, Ontario; her grandchildren Paul, Carolyne, Julie, Anaïs and Raphaëlle; and her siblings Marguerite, Eleanor, Elaine, Maureen, Bob and Greg. She is pre-deceased by her husband Guy and her parents, Rose and James. He will be missed by his brothers and their families: Bill, his wife Ginny and their children Tobin and Jennifer, Robert and his children Adam and Brandon, and Dave, his wife Penny and their children Matthew and Emma, and his aunt Doris SIMMINGTON. A Memorial Service will be held at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. W. on Friday, September 30 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

At the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, age 57 years. Diana KERSTENBECK (née TORPEL) is the beloved wife of Mark KERSTENBECK of Cambridge. Dear mother of Christopher LIIMA of Guelph, Erik LIIMA and his wife Angie of Fergus, Kersti KERSTENBECK and her fiancé Jonathan DOERR of Cambridge and Katrina KERSTENBECK and Colin of Cambridge; loved grandmother of Kimberley, Michael, Matthew, Kaitlyn, Brandon and Emily LIIMA and Aidan DOERR; loved sister of Delia GRIMSLEY and her husband Ron BLAIN of Lagoon City. Also lovingly remembered by her niece Michelle POLD. A memorial service will be conducted in the chapel of Coutts Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge on Friday, July 22, 2005 at 3 p.m. Cremation has taken place.
