Former Resident Passes
Word was received last week of the passing of Mearle JOLLEY on November 9 in Owen Sound Regional Health Centre, in her 87th year. Mearle was the youngest member of the late Fred and Gertrude (FOWLER) GREER/GRIER family. Mearle was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters, George, Evans, Audrey, Newton, Mae, Bertha and Rhoda. She was also predeceased by her husband Fred JOLLEY in 1956.
Mearle was born on the Greer farm, Concession 16, Proton, Bethel district, just prior to the Greer family moving to Highway 10, two farms above the Dundalk intersection, across from where Laidlaw Bus Depot is presently located. Mearle attended Dundalk Public and High Schools.
Following graduation from High School, Mearle attended Toronto Normal School and graduated as an elementary school teacher, a vocation she followed until she retired. Mearle taught in schools in Kimberley and Owen Sound. Mearle loved to travel, play bridge and participate in the retired teachers activities. She was also a faithful member of Knox United Church, Owen Sound.
Mearle's funeral was conducted on Friday, November 11 at 2 p.m. at the Tannahill Funeral Home in Owen Sound by the Reverend Ralph SCHMIDT, minister of Knox United Church. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound.
Those left to mourn Mearle's passing are, her sister-in-law, Mrs. Barbara GREER/GRIER, Prince George, British Columbia and a number of nieces and nephews in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia Helen ROGERS, Royston, British Columbia and Delbert and Mervyn FOWLER, Dundalk are first cousins.
Relatives attending Mearle's funeral were Sandra SEABROOK (niece,) Lakefield, Delbert, Mervyn and Mary FOWLER, Dundalk and Ruth SCOTT, Holstein.

Peacefully at Caressant Care Courtland on Monday, October 24, 2005, Mary Margaret Rita (née SIEGEL) LEPPEK of Farmington, Michigan in her 94th year with her faithful caregivers, Betty and Allan GREER/GRIER, by her side. Beloved wife of the late Paul Frank LEPPEK (1982.) Loving sister-in-law of Helen SIEGEL of Seaforth. Cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Theckla (WEBER) SIEGEL, her brothers, William and Francis SIEGEL, her sisters, Agnes ZETTLER, Magdalen SCHENKEL, and Kathleen ZETTLER, and her sister-in-law and brothers-in-law Melinda SIEGEL, Albert ZETTLER, Lawrence SCHENKEL and Eugene ZETTLER. Mary was born and raised in Chepstow, Ontario, and from 1937 until 1997 she lived and worked in Michigan. Beloved husband for 53 years of the late Rhona (ENRIGHT,) devoted father of Anne (Alan) SEVIGNY and Colleen (Don) FRASER. Caring grandfather of Christine and Jennifer SEVIGNY. His lifelong passion for nature motivated him to a University of Toronto Forestry degree, and into teaching high school science for many years at Ottawa Tech before becoming a Vice Principal at Brookfield and Woodroffe. Another passion was athletics - football, track and field, and gymnastics - as participant and coach to many winning teams. His Christie Lake island cottage lured him for 55 years with its serenity and beauty, and he would often travel the shoreline in his red canoe. Died at home in Centreville, Maryland, on June 20th 2005. He was 73. Ted is survived by his beloved wife, Marion; his sister, Rosemary IRVINE of Ottawa; son, Simon of Karana Downs, Australia stepson, Coburn BOYD of New York; and grandchildren, Benjamin and Emily GREER/GRIER of Karana Downs. Ted was the son of Geoffrey GREER/GRIER, A.R.C.A., and Jocelyn Wilson GREER/GRIER and the grand_son of Sir E. Wyly GREER/GRIER, P.R.C.A. Ted's father and grandfather were landscape and portrait painters and his own work, in watercolour and oils, reflects both artistic lineages. Ted graduated from McDonald High School in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, attended McGill and studied art in Toronto. In London, Bermuda, Nassau, Ft. Lauderdale and Maryland, he worked as a longshoreman, ship's cook, airline agent, sailor, photographer, graphics designer and crab fisherman - a wealth of experiences to feed his active and creative mind. Nancy McADAM, at the age of 80, was the beloved mother of Linda June GREER/GRIER and Clifford Allan KAYE. Predeceased by son, Keith William KAYE. Cherished grandmother of Cameron GREER/GRIER, Kristy ALLEN and Fawn BRISCOE. Loving daughter of the late Percival and Elizabeth McADAM. She was the youngest of six: Margaret BERTRAND, Thelma GREENAN, Norma McADAM, Gordon McADAM and Jean HOPE. In keeping with Nancy's wishes, cremation has taken place. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Emelia Regina McMANUS (née BUCHNER) on Monday, August 22, 2005 at Mississauga's Trillium Hospital. Emelia was born on October 1, 1923 in Macklin, Saskatchewan. She was the 5th of 15 children of John and Evelyn BUCHNER. Emelia grew up in Macklin and following her marriage to Don McMANUS lived in Balcarres, Saskatchewan. Later, Emelia and Don moved to Winnipeg where they lived until their retirement to Kelowna, British Columbia in 1989. Emelia leaves her children Dorothy Anne (Kerry), Bill and John (Tracy) to mourn her passing. She also leaves three grandchildren - Jenna, Lane and Adam. Emelia is also survived by her siblings, Dorothy GREER/GRIER, Evelyn HEINBUCH, Ed BUCHNER and Bob BUCHNER as well as many nieces and nephewsfor whom she was a favourite aunt. Emelia was predeceased by her husband, Donald in 2004. Peacefully at his home in Wooler, Ontario, on Wednesday, June 1, 2005. Klaus passed on after a long and dignified battle against cancer. Lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Hanna, and already missed by his four children Jurgen (Italy), Bernie (Komoka, Ontario,) Christian (at home,) and Joan HATFIELD (Middleton, Nova Scotia). Also sadly missed by his daughters-in-law Barbara and Linda and son-in-law Chuck. His grandchildren Karl ( and wife Josée), Laura, Brandon and Shawn will cherish with great fondness their special times with Opa when he would share his great wisdom, insight and worldly experience. He will also be remembered by family in Germany.
Always an animal lover, Klaus will not soon be forgotten by his treasured Giant Schnauzer Toby whose daily walks with Klaus along the river in Frankford were a source of much joy for each of them. His long career in agriculture management in Ontario and British Columbia earned Klaus the respect of his many business associates and Friends. He spent his retirement years in the Trenton area enjoying the nearby water that he so loved. The family would like to thank Dr. GREGG and Dr. THANE (Kingston Regional Cancer Centre,) Dr. PRASAD, and the many Victorian Order of Nurses nurses and Red Cross home care workers for their expert and dedicated care while Klaus was ill. Cremation has taken place. As per Klaus' wishes a small memorial service will be held in the chapel of Weaver Family Funeral Home, 170 Dundas Street W., Trenton, Ontario on Saturday, June 4 at 11: 00 a.m. The family will receive visitors 1/2 hour prior to the service. Of Saint Thomas, on Friday, September 9, 2005, at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital in his 81st year. Beloved husband of the late Marjorie (IRELAND) ELLIS (May 2005.) Dearly loved father of Jo-Anne ELLIS of Saint Thomas, Ruth BASKEY of Saint Thomas, Robert ELLIS and his wife Janice of Saint Thomas, Mary Jane ELLIS and her husband David HOWELL of St. Catharines and dear father-in-law of Richard BASKEY of Sparta. Loved brother of Shirley and her husband Horace BRYANT of Texas and the late Rosemary FARLEY, and dear brother-in-law of Dorothy MILLER of London and Dr. Richard FARLEY of Brantford. Much loved grandfather of Jason, Holly and Jamie BASKEY, Andrew GRIFFIN and Madison HOWELL. Dear nephew of Rose COUTTS of Mississauga, also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Harold was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 29, 1925, the son of the late Edwin "Ted" and Mary (GREGG) ELLIS. Harold grew up in the Springfield-Aylmer area and resided in Saint Thomas and Fingal since 1949. Harold was the retired owner of Ellis Farm Equipment and was a 50 year member of First United Church, life member of the Fingal Optimist Club and also belonged to the Malahide Masonic Lodge #140, Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas until Monday morning and then to First United Church, St. George Street, St. Thomas for funeral service at 11: 00 a.m. Cremation to follow with private interment of ashes in Fingal Cemetery. Visitation Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Remembrances may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, First United Church or charity of choice.

Student collapses, dies at badminton tryout

A 17-year-old student died after trying out for the badminton team with about 35 others at her all-girls private school yesterday morning.
Jennifer LOU, a boarding student from Taiwan at Bishop Strachan School, collapsed and fell unconscious about 8 a.m. Staff began performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation immediately. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9: 30 a.m.
"Obviously, the school is in shock," spokeswoman Sharon GREGG said, adding that grief counsellors were called in to talk to the students.
Ms. LOU had been boarding at the Avenue Road and Spadina Avenue school for the past two years. Her parents were contacted yesterday in Taiwan.
