HARBRON, Sheila Elizabeth (née LESTER) B.A., B.Ed., U.E.
On Saturday, December 3 at Central Park Lodge Westside in Etobicoke, at the age of 79, after a long illness. Beloved wife of 55 years of John, sister of Richard LESTER of West Vancouver, dearly loved mother of Patrick of Kinderhook, New York Christopher of Regina, and Ann of Toronto, and grandmother of Katie and Jessie of Regina. Sister-in-law to the late Janet BRAIDE, and to Florence KRISTJANSON and Lillian P. DYSON- BABCOCK. Mother-in-law to Dana SPOT and John WESTHEUSER. Among Sheila's ancestors are John Pritchard (one of the original settlers of Rupert's Land, an area encompassing most of what later became Western Canada), Egerton Ryerson, a United Empire Loyalist and a leading figure in 19th-century Ontario education and politics, and Elizabeth Matheson, one of the first female doctors in Canada. Sheila lived a full and active life, and made many contributions to her community. Born in Toronto on November 29, 1926, and raised in that city, she attended Oakwood Collegiate and graduated from Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1948. She married John Davison HARBRON on September 20, 1950 and devoted much of her energies over the next three decades to being a devoted wife and mother. She was the first social convener of the newly founded Victoria Symphony Orchestra in 1952, and was a scriptwriter for radio station CJVI in Victoria in 1952-53. The couple moved to Toronto in 1953. In the early 1970s, while still raising her family, Sheila began working as a substitute teacher. She returned to university part-time and earned her B.Ed. from the University of Toronto in 1976, and spent the next 20 years as a much-in-demand substitute teacher at Etobicoke high schools. Sheila was president of the Etobicoke branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women in 1966-67, and president of the Governor Simcoe branch of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada from 1989-92. She was a member of the Ryerse-Ryerson Family Association, produced a family tree of Ryerson descendants in 1983, and was given a Volunteer Service Award by the government of Ontario in 1998 for her work with the United Empire Loyalists. Sheila was also an active member of St. George's Church-on-the Hill in Etobicoke, including serving as editor of the church newsletter The Lance from 1989-92. Sheila will be profoundly missed by her family and her many lifelong Friends. The family would like to convey their deepest gratitude to Sheila's caregivers and to Dr. Sam GREENSPAN at Central Park Lodge Westside, and all who have supported us through her long illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto. The memorial and celebration of Sheila's life will be held at St. George's Church on-the-Hill on Thursday. December 22, at 11 a.m. Interment, to be attended by the immediate family, will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at 2 p.m.

GREENSPAN, David B.
Many people lost a great friend whom they loved and admired, on Tuesday, December 27, 2005. Beloved and loving husband of Lisa, father of Naomi, Rebecca, Rachel, step-father of Leorra, Adam, and Dana, grandfather of Brianna and Joseph. Predeceased by his brother Larry, David was a devoted son to his late parents Max and Rose. To his legion of Friends, the first characteristic that often seemed to come to mind when describing David was his charm. But his charm was a reflection of another quality that truly defined his character and personality - empathy. He deeply cared about people, and it showed, even in day-to-day conversation. His reaction to news from Friends, and what was happening in their lives, reflected enthusiasm, concern, or intellectual curiosity, based on the circumstances. When he asked someone how they were, it was clear that he genuinely wanted to know. These characteristics - and his intellect, discipline, and commitment to hard work - helped him achieve much professionally, as a lawyer, advocate and political activist. These qualities helped him survive and surmount many difficulties in his life, including the untimely death of his only brother, and they helped him stage a heroic battle against cancer, a fight that inspired many. His empathy also powered his commitment to many Jewish and general causes and charities. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West (3 lights west of Dufferin) for service on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at 11: 30 a.m. Interment Driltzer Young Men's Society at Dawes Road Cemetery. Shiva 15 Montclair Avenue. If desired, donations may be made to the David B. Greenspan Memorial Fund c/o The Benjamin Foundation, 3429 Bathurst Street, Toronto, M6A 2C3, 416-780-0324.
