GAIN,
Donald
Nelson
(Journalist /Traveler)
Don passed peacefully in his 92nd year in Victoria, British Columbia
where he had lived for more than 40 years. Born September 17,
1913 in St. Catharines, Ontario to Daisy
(DEAN) and Charles Nelson
GAIN,
Don was the second of 4 brothers. Don began his journalism
career at age 18 as a high school sports reporter for the St.
Catharines Standard and here his skill as a wordsmith was developed
as he made a list of all the synonyms for a football on a sheet
of paper and ticked them off as he used them. Don attended the
University of Toronto and worked variously in Toronto, Timmins
and Kirkland Lake before joining two of his brothers in the Royal
Canadian Air Force. Here his love of travelling was nurtured
during his training at Chatham, New Brunswick, Summerside, Prince
Edward Island and Patricia Bay, British Columbia before being
stationed as a navigator on Canso submarine patrol aircraft out
of Alliford Bay, Queen Charlotte Islands. At Alliford Bay, he
continued his interest in newspapers by becoming editor of a
daily, mimeographed news sheet handed out to service personnel
in the dining hall and publishing a monthly magazine (The Victory)
at the station. Don was now hooked on the West Coast and after
the war, lived and worked in Oregon and California, writing for
a string of labour newspapers owned by a Canadian. But ever eager
to travel, he signed on to Norwegian cargo vessels as a steward
and travelled to Japan, West Indies, South America, and the U.S.
east coast. On those trips, he disciplined himself to write as
much as 3000 words a day, selling what articles he could and
dreamed of becoming a foreign correspondent. The last thing he
did before departing on a ship, was to return his library books.
Now in his late 30's, Don wrote from Trinidad to a friend that
'If I live long enough, maybe I will be successful.' After ship-board
travel became tiresome, Don continued to work in California,
where, among other things, he was a radio drama producer. Finally,
Don returned to Canada where he worked for Canada Dry as sales
manager in Victoria and here he realized his dream. In 1962,
he joined the staff of the Victoria Colonist where he covered
all the beats - politics, religion, marine events, armed forces,
police and realized another dream by travelling with Canadian
Peace Keepers to Cyprus, Norway, Germany, France, and the Arctic.
Highlights of those trips included interviewing Archbishop Mikarios
and transferring, ship-to-ship on a bosun's chair, with the Navy.
After 13 years, Don retired from the paper with cudos from the
Saanich District council as 'a fair and honest reporter.' He
used to say he had Friends in 'high' places as he wrote both
the military news and the church page. He then attended the University
of Victoria to learn French and continued travelling by, among
other things, immersing himself in the French culture by spending
6 month stints at the university at Aix-en Provence. He continued
to freelance and never lost his inquisitiveness, sometimes 'interviewing'
you until you had to cry 'Uncle!'. Don never married nor had
a family of his own, but he was a true patriarch, always keeping
in touch and visiting family in eastern Canada and U.S., usually
as stop-overs to overseas. He knew all the family connections
and sometimes as a young man, my eyes would glaze over as he
once again recited the family tree. But his enthusiasm was infectious
and I'm now destined to carry that torch. Don did not belong
to service clubs but, non-the-less, served the community through
a deep sense of social involvement. In retirement, he tirelessly
visited elderly Friends and acquaintances and drove them anywhere
necessary to attend their needs until he voluntarily gave up
his own license. His list of annual charitable donations was
long. Don never made the Fortune 500 list and had by-lines instead
of headlines, but by any other measure, he was a success. He
survived all 3 of his brothers and is now survived by nephews:
Nelson GAIN (Marg), Meaford, Ont,;; Cameron
GAIN (Pauline), Welland,
Ontario; Scott
GAIN, Nelson, British Columbia (Glenda, Victoria,
British Columbia); Donald
GAIN (Mickey), Aurora, Ont,;; Dean
GAIN,
California;
Diane
GOLDWATER, Arizona. Grand nieces/nephews:
Kitty ARMSTRONG, Dana
GAIN, Jason
GAIN, Christy
GAIN, Allison
GAIN, Donald
GAIN, Geordie
SEED, Corrie
SEED and numerous great-grand
nieces/nephews. Don was a long time member of the First Unitarian
Church of Victoria (5575 West Saanich Road) where he will be
remembered and celebrated by Friends and family on February 5,
2005 at 2pm. Don's ashes will be scattered in the Memorial Garden
and a plaque placed in the Memorial Wall. If so inclined, please
bring remembrances both written and verbal to share and make
donations, in his name, to your favourite charity in lieu of
flowers.
