It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jim FITZGERALD on July 9, 2005. Husband of the late Margaret Gilday FITZGERALD. Beloved▼ father, teacher, and, friend of Anne, (Garry HUNTER,) Venu, (Harida ELSEA), Bruce, (Leda), Jane, (Robin CLOW), Barbara, (John RONSLEY,) and Joni, (Harvey GOLDMINTZ.) Loving▼ " Grandpa▼" to 'Sara, (Sean FOLKES), Kimberley, Michael, Lindsay, Morgan, Taylor, Mairen, Rebecca, Jason, Emma, Clair, Heather, Shawn, Melissa, Melanie, Laura, and Bryna, (deceased). Jim was a Veteran of the Second World War. His business career was with the T. Eaton Company from 1948 until his retirement. He then filled his time with family, golf, and bridge. In his last few days of life, Jim never lost his sense of humour. A special thanks to the Goldmintz family for keeping "Grandpa" a special person in their life. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Errinrung Nursing Home in Thornbury for their exceptional care and many kindnesses to both our father and our family. Visitation will take place at Saint John's Anglican Church York Mills, (Garnsworthy Room), 19 Don Ridge Drive, on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 from 7: 00 to 9:00 p.m. The service of remembrance will be held in the Church on Thursday at 12: 00 noon. It is with great sorrow that we share the news of the sudden passing of Kenneth LAWSON on Thursday, November 24, 2005. Daughters Camille with love Alan, Laura with husband David, Lorraine with husband Michael along with grandchildren Sarah, Matt, Lisa, Philip, Carly and Will, precious Friends Maria, John, James and Nereida FLANNERY, family members Lynn LAWSON and Mark QUIGLEY, dear friend John LUNDAGER and cousin Annemarie GOLDSCHMIDT and friend and minister Reverend Hugh REID will miss Ken's presence immensely.
Ken led by example. He was a natural athlete and took great pride in his athletic achievements. He was a passionate learner graduating from both the University of Toronto and Harvard Business School. He was a visionary in the Canadian travel industry and travelled to over 125 countries in the course of his long career.
Ken's deep spirituality and sense of human worth were demonstrated by his legacy of caring for those less privileged. Ken was a valued contributor to his church, Kingsway Lambton United, and in particular the Outreach Committee.
He will be profoundly missed because he touched so many hearts with his compassion, zest for life and winning spirit. You never wondered what Ken was thinking; he taught us that you "play it where it lies". He lived his life true to his Albertan and Danish roots. All who knew him celebrate his life. He is safely home.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, at Windermere, just east of the Jane Subway. Ken led by example. He was a natural athlete and took great pride in his athletic achievements. He was a passionate learner, graduating from both University of Toronto and Harvard Business School. He was a visionary in the Canadian travel industry and travelled to over 125 countries in the course of his long career. Ken's deep spirituality and sense of human worth was demonstrated by his legacy of caring for those less privileged. Ken was a valued contributor to his church, Kingsway-Lambton United, and in particular the Outreach Committee. He will be profoundly missed because he touched so many hearts with his compassion, zest for life, and winning spirit. You never wondered what Ken was thinking, he taught us that you "play it where it lies". He lived his life true to his Alberta and Danish roots. All who knew him celebrate his life. Earl GOLDSMITH was called to his eternal rest after a brave and courageous struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Bernice (BLACKWELL,) a son, Jon Bradley, and a daughter, Deborah Ruth FOUTS. Dr. GOLDSMITH was born and raised in London, the son of Arthur and Ellen GOLDSMITH. Dr. GOLDSMITH was Director of Counseling Associates in Ft. Myers, Florida for 21 years. Before moving to Ft. Myers in 1984, he was director of Christian Counseling Associates in Indianapolis, Indiana for over 20 years. He and his wife have been long time members of McGregor Baptist Church in Ft. Myers where he taught a Sunday School class for over 15 years and was a leader in the men's ministry program. Dr. GOLDSMITH was born in London on January 21, 1921. He served for 4 years in the Canadian Navy during World War 2. Dr. GOLDSMITH received his under graduate degree at the University of Western Ontario and advanced degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary and Indiana University. He authored numerous publications including a textbook published on counseling techniques. A popular speaker, Dr. GOLDSMITH was also honored to accompany Billy Graham on one of his international crusades.

Michael GOLDSTEIN, 54, 'Wizard' of Rochdale
Draft dodger helped keep experimental university running
Later founded environmental consulting company

"People always think it was so hard for us draft dodgers," Michael GOLDSTEIN used to say in his broad New York accent. He thought someone should set them straight and write about what a good time it was.
Avoiding the draft for the Vietnam War, GOLDSTEIN arrived in Toronto in 1968, three days shy of his 18th birthday, and was impressed by the city's hospitality. He found housing at the newly opened Rochdale College, a free, experimental, student-directed university and co-op residence.
At Rochdale he encountered Friends and causes to keep him occupied.
One of those Friends, acclaimed science-fiction writer Judith MERRIL, who died in 1997, considered him a close friend.
She wrote about him in Better to Have Loved, the autobiography she co-authored with her granddaughter, Emily POHL- WEARY.
GOLDSTEIN died of cancer February 27, at the age of 54.
Another lifelong friend was Barb CARLSTROM, who remembered GOLDSTEIN as a "vital, happy, intense whirlwind. He knew everyone, he was interested in everything, he was everywhere."
GOLDSTEIN was born in Chicago and raised in New York City, the second of three children, along with sisters Marianne and Joanne.
His father was a Jew who converted to Quakerism during a rebellious youth.
As a teenager, GOLDSTEIN was opposed to the Vietnam War and took part in anti-war protests. Young men were required to register for the draft at 18.
GOLDSTEIN thought it would be dishonest to conscientiously object based on religion because he was opposed to the war for political reasons.
At 17, he didn't feel he could handle jail, so he decided to move to Canada.
His pacifist parents helped by driving him to Toronto. For the next few years, the family visited him at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
GOLDSTEIN became passionately involved in the beginnings of the still-thriving Theatre Passe Muraille.
(The group's historical piece, The Rochdale Project, was in workshops at Passe Muraille last week and will play again in February 2006.)
For all his idealism, GOLDSTEIN was practical and became known for fixing and building things. He became part of the crew that literally kept Rochdale running.
"You had a lot of young people who were trying to live this cool lifestyle, but they weren't taking care of business, like the electrical system and plumbing," said his older sister, Marianne ROBBINS.
So GOLDSTEIN took responsibility.
"That was the way he would approach things, as opposed to wanting to write fancy essays about this great experiment," ROBBINS said.
GOLDSTEIN's ability to figure things out and fix them became legendary, earning him the nickname "The Wizard."
Though it wasn't shut down until 1975, Rochdale's drug-propelled decline had begun by 1970.
The college, located in an 18-storey highrise at Bloor St. W. and Huron Sts., on the northern border of the University of Toronto, had a policy of not turning anyone away, including drug users and dealers.
The disintegration of Rochdale prompted GOLDSTEIN to hitchhike to Vancouver.
When he returned to Toronto after a summer, things at Rochdale had further deteriorated.
GOLDSTEIN made the difficult decision to go west for good.
In Vancouver, he worked for a draft-dodgers' newsletter and for the Company of Young Canadians, a community development organization started by Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government.
As well, he studied at the University of British Columbia and pursued a variety of other causes.
Later, GOLDSTEIN started an environmental consulting company, Soilcon.
Among other things, his ideas were used to clean up contaminated uranium mines on Hudson Bay and to grow trees on the marshy Vancouver airport grounds.
At the Company of Young Canadians, GOLDSTEIN met his future wife, Arline OISHI. They married in 1975.
The couple journeyed around the world together in 1979 and looked forward to another world tour when they retired. They never got the chance.
"Leaving New York for Toronto was easy," he used to say.
"Leaving Toronto for Vancouver was very difficult."
In addition to his wife, GOLDSTEIN leaves his daughter Devon and son Rhys. Last week the family held a service in Vancouver.

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at Ina Grafton Gage Home, on Friday, September 23, 2005, after having enjoyed a wonderful life. She was in her 89th year. She will be dearly missed by her daughters Helen, Florence, Virginia, Fe, and Teresita. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Leslie DOWELL. He passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by family, on Friday, December 16, 2005. He will be sadly missed by all. Jack was the beloved husband of Aida, father and father-in-law of Steve and Reenie, Chris and Dave, Sandi and Greg, Michelle and Jeff, Judy and Jeff, Peter and Laleh, Paul and Jennifer.
