Man shot dead visiting sick Mom
Young man who had 'no enemies' fatally shot in stairwell
Relatives and Friends grieve a man whom 'everybody liked'
By Betsy POWELL,
Crime
Reporter
He worked two jobs, visited his sick mother daily and had never
been in trouble with the law.
And now police and 26-year-old Selvakumar
SELLAIAH's grieving
relatives and Friends are struggling to figure out why he was
shot to death in the 17th floor stairwell of the St. Jamestown
highrise where his mother and sister lived.
Residents called police around 11: 50 p.m. Tuesday to report hearing
what sounded like a struggle and the sound of gunfire, homicide
Det. Joel KULMATYCKI told a news conference yesterday at police
headquarters. Police officers from 51 Division and emergency
crews arrived within minutes and discovered
SELLAIAH's body.
An autopsy is scheduled for this morning.
Police are investigating whether robbery was a motive.
SELLAIAH moved to Toronto from Sri Lanka eight years ago and
was a Canadian citizen. For almost two years, he had travelled
across the city to work in the kitchen of Tony Pistola's, an
Italian restaurant on Bloor Street W. near Royal York Rd., and
recently started working in the morning at a pub on Bay St.
He lived in a bachelor apartment on Gerrard St. but was a regular
visitor at the Bleecker St. building, where he came to look after
his ailing mother. "That says what kind of man this is,"
KULMATYCKI
said.
By mid-afternoon yesterday, two storeys below where the slaying
occurred, his mother's 15th floor apartment had turned into a
place of mourning packed with family and Friends. Some sobbed
quietly, including
SELLAIAH's 23-year-old sister Jayanthini.
She sat slumped over on the edge of a bed, hands over her head
and tears spilling onto a framed picture of her brother.
In the living room, family members tried to console
SELLAIAH's
tiny mother, Vadivambigh
SELLAIAH, as she pounded her chest,
wailed and rocked back and forth. His two brothers, Pathmakumar,
28, and Santhakumar, 25, looked dazed and shaken as they moved
from room to room speaking quietly to visitors in the crowded
flat filled with religious icons.
First cousin Guna
NARMALAR said
SELLAIAH has been a "big help"
to the family, particularly since his father died three years
ago. "He was friendly and had no bad habits," he said. "He has
no enemies."
Co-worker Wara
THGARAJAH, kitchen manager at Tony Pistola's,
said he last saw
SELLAIAH around 5 p.m. Tuesday. As he was leaving
from his day shift,
SELLAIAH was arriving. Fellow employees have
told him SELLAIAH finished work in the kitchen around 10: 30,
had a quick beer and left, though he wasn't exactly sure when.
Police are trying to figure out how
SELLAIAH came to be in the
building and don't believe he had visited his family that night.
Thgarajah called him a reliable, hard-working employee who had
been working at the restaurant for about two years. "Everybody
liked him, they never complain about him," he said, pausing to
take a deep breath.
SELLAIAH was also recently hired to work in the kitchen of a
Bay St. pub on the recommendation of a distant relative.
"He did what he was told. He had a lot of knowledge and he was
very punctual, all the time opening the stores because he was
the main guy opening," said the owner, who asked not to be identified.
"This morning it was unlike him not to show up... at 11: 30 I
called the pub and nobody was here so I had to come down myself
and open." He tracked down the family. "I called to find out
if he was there and sure enough somebody answered and told me
he was shot last night."
SELLAIAH was the city's ninth homicide victim.
KULMATYCKI said he and partner Gary
GIROUX investigated
another homicide at a building just north of the Bleecker St.
building where
SELLAIAH was slain. "There is gunfire in that
area and it's an unfortunate thing because the residents are
sick and tired of these mutts coming in with guns."
Police are working with the Toronto Housing Authority to see
if video surveillance can help solve the crime, he said.
