Passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Oshawa General Hospital. Beloved wife of Edward. Loving mother of Richard GAUCI, and Henri and his wife Patricia GAUCI. Sister to Ema LEFEBRE and the late Lili, Irene, Maurice and Paul. Therese faced her long struggle with cancer with great courage and optimism. She will be sadly missed by all of her family, including many nieces and nephews and especially her many longtime Friends who cared for her so lovingly. Mum died peacefully on Sunday, May 1st, 2005, at her home in Mansonville, Quebec with her 4 children and her much loved dog Bianca with her. Janet was the beloved wife of the late Chip DRURY, sister to Alfred DOBELL, and loving mother to Sally (McDOUGALL,) Chip, Penny (BALLEM,) Pansy (GAUDREAU,) and Reid. Her grandchildren Todd, John, Reid, Peter, Kate, Alexandra, Jack, Kyrke, Taylor, Kevin, and Baye were devoted to their Jaja and she was sorry not to have more time with her much awaited great-grandchildren Ben and Jane. Jaja was a force to be reckoned with and we all worked hard to keep up with her. She enjoyed many Friends, young and old, and was a tireless volunteer and a generous supporter of many different community organizations. She had a great run and we shall all miss her. In her last few weeks she received wonderful care from the palliative care team at the Mansonville centre local de services communautaires - their kindness was greatly appreciated by all of us.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6th at St. George's Anglican Church, 1101 Stanley, Montreal, Quebec with a reception to follow at the University Club of Montreal, 2047 Mansfield.

Died peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus), Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at the age of 78 years. Beloved husband of Alice Christina MacKENZIE, his wife of 53 years. Fondly remembered by his three children, Leslie (Guy NELSON,) Elspeth GAUKRODGER (Robert McADAM) and David GAUKRODGER (Tamara MAWHINNEY) and his four grandchildren, Ryan, Trevor, Jocelyn and Liseanne. Survived by his sister Gwen (Ralph DERBY) of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Predeceased by his three sisters, Isabel TENNANT, Eloise STEABNER and Eleanor NIXON and his parents, Reverend Clement and Margaretta (JAMES) GAUKRODGER. Bill graduated with a Medical Degree from Queen's University in 1953, then he studied Ophthalmology at the University of Chicago Clinics and Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Bill practiced Ophthalmology in Ottawa for 37 years, in private practice and at the Ottawa Civic, Riverside, Grace and Perley Hospitals. He also lectured in Clinical Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Bill is remembered for his love of home movies, organ music, sailing, skiing, golf and travel. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers who assisted Bill in his last days at Saint-Vincent Hospital and the Ottawa Civic Hospital (Rehabilitation Centre and Civic Campus). The family will receive Friends and former patients at the Tubman Funeral Home, Westboro Chapel, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa, on Sunday, December 4, 2005 from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A Memorial service will be held in the Chapel on Monday at 11: 00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.

It is with great sorrow the family of Ralph Carl ESTABROOKS announces his passing on Friday, May 13, 2005 at the age of 84 years. Husband of the late Carrie ESTABROOKS. Loving father of Yvonne LAVALLEY (Phillip) of Lake St. Peter, Ontario, the late Carol GAUNCE (Ed) of Acamac, New Brunswick, Lyn CAPUTO (Vince) of Bramalea, Ontario, Joy HUSSEY (Gord) of Lake St. Peter, Ontario, Geri HALSTEAD (Frank) of Pickering, Ontario. Proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Brother of Richard of Moncton, New Brunswick. Predeceased by brothers Vaughan of Sackville, New Brunswick and Donald (Tubby) of Lakewood, New Brunswick. Predeceased by parents Carl and Lena of Saint John, New Brunswick. Ralph was a Veteran and served his country with honour during World War 2. He was enlisted in the Carleton and York Regiment from 1939-1945. Ralph was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Ralph retired from the Ministry of Correctional Services in 1985 after 30 years of service. He retired to the Bancroft area where he has lived for 17 years. Ralph lived a simple life just as he wished for. He enjoyed deer and moose hunting but his favourite pastime was attending the local auction sales. His week was not complete unless he came home with a new box of goodies to add to his collection. He will be especially missed by his best friend Mary-Lou DRAKE. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 17th from 12: 30-2:30 p.m. at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 660 Kennedy Road, Scarborough (between Eglinton and St. Clair Aves. E.), 416-266-4404. Karen's spirit and strength guided her through a long battle with cancer but the words we often heard from her mouth were, "I'm fine". She was an amazing example of courage to us all. Even through her illness she remained committed to her passion for skating and supported her team, the Port Stanley Ice Breakers, as they competed at Canadians in February 2005. As a member of the Dorchester Christian Family Center. Karen continued to keep a solid faith in God and remained positive and happy throughout her life. She will be missed deeply by all who knew her. She remains in our hearts and will live in us forever. Thornhill, Ontario -- Scott YOUNG's obituary appeared on June The passing of Scott YOUNG this week brought back for me memories of September, 1964, and the conversion of Toronto's CJBC into a French radio station. I came to Toronto at the time to work as an announcer on the newly converted station.
There was some hostility in the newspapers regarding the conversion, as CJBC was popular with the English-speaking audience. But we found an unexpected friend in the most unexpected place: Scott YOUNG, a columnist for The Globe and Mail who had written several columns supporting a French CJBC.
On October 1, 1964, our first day on air in French, we had wanted to interview Mr. YOUNG. When we phoned him for an appointment, we found out he did not speak French. But we agreed to meet anyway. We met at his Rosedale home and, for the next two hours, painstakingly, we put together a good minute and a half of Scott YOUNG in French.
Word by word, Mr. YOUNG repeated each word of a prepared French text several times until he had reached a perfect pronunciation for each one. Back at CJBC, it was my job to edit Mr. YOUNG's voice. It took me a good three hours of minute splicing of quarter-inch audiotape. But, at the end, we had Mr. YOUNG wishing the best for the new CJBC in a more than passable French.
This was my first interview with a member of our new Toronto audience. I could not have had a better introduction to this city than the one I got with this most civilized and broadminded Torontonian.

On learning of Scott YOUNG's passing, I was immediately taken back to the early 1960s in Winnipeg. Then, most schoolboys played hockey year-round, watched Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday and read every book that could be found about the greatest team sport in history and "the world's fastest game."
At the time, many of us still thought we had a legitimate shot at playing professional hockey, despite the nearly insurmountable odds against that prospect. Mr. YOUNG's scintillating trilogy Scrubs on Skates, Boy on Defence and Boy at the Leafs' Camp was the cornerstones of most of our rather limited personal libraries.
I ripped through the pages of Scrubs on Skates so many times that the book nearly disintegrated. Somehow, Santa knew to put another copy under the tree that year.
Mr. YOUNG's books were the first works of fiction that ever set my heart racing while broadening my horizons to consider some of life's possibilities. For many, it was the closest we ever got to the training camp of a professional hockey team, and we can all thank Scott YOUNG for that opportunity. His power with the pen could thrill and excite while magically transporting you to the world of your dreams.
Roy MacGREGOR notes that Canadians now have "no Scott YOUNG to connect the national game to the national culture" (This Country June 15). Fortunately for many of us, he already has and his legacy will live on for generations to come.

About 45 years ago, during my first (and only) year in Ryerson's journalism program, I decided -- in my desire to become Canada's greatest sportswriter -- that I should write about my school's teams for The Globe and Mail.
Shamelessly invoking the name of an uncle who knew him, I visited Jim VIPOND, the Sports editor, and suggested that The Globe needed to cover Ryerson sports -- and that I was just the man to do it. Without missing a beat, he sent me out of his office to write a brief autobiography to help him make a decision.
Choosing an empty chair in front of an old manual typewriter, I almost froze when I noticed that the man pounding away next to me was Scott YOUNG, an icon in sports journalism and one of my heroes. I recall no greeting or sign of acknowledgment from my neighbour (and I certainly would not have dreamed of interrupting him); but that brief near-encounter remains one of my fondest memories.
Despite shaking, clammy hands, a suddenly dry throat and a blank mind, I managed to bang out something for Mr. VIPOND. I got the non-paying "job" and, for a few months, wrote for the same newspaper as Scott YOUNG at the peak of his career.
Eventually, I met my wife, Gail. She bettered my story: She and a former boyfriend used to double-date with Scott YOUNG's son Neil. Together, we still feel a certain affinity with the YOUNGs.

In the late 1950s, my parents purchased the full Encyclopedia Britannica on my behalf. Being more sports mad at the time than now, I was delighted to find an article titled Hockey -- A Nation's Pastime in the 1960 yearbook. The article left an indelible impression on me, and I have read it many times since.
It was built around a 1-0 game in December, 1959, between the Maple Leafs and the Canadiens. The author, Scott YOUNG (at that time a Globe and Mail columnist), described the atmosphere inside and outside Maple Leaf Gardens beforehand, including the scalpers and the standing-room patrons, who at that time were about 15 per cent of the Gardens' ticket holders. Then came "the whole beauty of the game" - teamwork, body checks, high skills and reflexes, and the individuality of stars like Doug Harvey, the Pocket Rocket, Jean Beliveau ("moving with the effortless power of a big buck deer"), and the only goal scorer, Frank Mahovlich.
Mr. YOUNG's article soared by translating the Canadian passion for ice hockey into poetry. He wrote, "Throughout the game the noise of the crowd was a constant series of great Ohs," and, at game's end, "Here I had seen something to remember -- the Canadian equivalent of an Italian opera audience, rising as one to shout 'Bravo.' "
That article is a time capsule of my love for the game, and also of what the return of great hockey would mean for our country. Thank you, Scott YOUNG.

Suddenly in peace at home with her daughter and grandchildren, on Wednesday, June 22, 2005. Bradda MILNER, daughter of the late Hugh and Gladys MILNER. Dearly beloved wife of the late Bruce H. TAILOR/TAYLOR and special friend of David PITBLADO. Beloved mother and mother-in-law of Frances and David GAUTHIER, Dorothy TAILOR/TAYLOR, Fred and Wendy TAILOR/TAYLOR, Charles and Cheryl TAILOR/TAYLOR, Tim and Jane TAILOR/TAYLOR, Pauline and Peter FREW, and Philip and Shannon TAILOR/TAYLOR. Loving Gramma of 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Ian MILNER, Tean BARRICK, Douglas MILNER, Tom MILNER, Carol COYNE and the late Charles MILNER. Bradda was a past employee of Canada Packers, Status of Women's Council of Canada, Liberal Riding Association of Etobicoke North of which she was a past president, television Ontario and numerous legal firms. In addition to a very active career, she was very active and passionate about her needlework and crafts. Resting at the Newediuk Funeral Home, Kipling Chapel, 2104 Kipling Ave., Etobicoke (two blocks north of Rexdale Blvd.) from 7 p.m. Thursday. Funeral Saturday, leaving the funeral home 9 a.m. for Funeral Mass from St. Benedict's Church, 2194 Kipling Ave. at 9: 30 a.m., followed by cremation. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Peacefully at The Carpenter Hospice in Burlington, on Monday, July 4, 2005, at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Doris AUCOIN. Cherished father of Geri MIROSLAVICH (John) of Oakville, and Linda GAUTHIER (Peter) of Burlington. Daniel will be deeply missed by his loving granddaughter Danielle GAUTHIER. Daniel is predeceased by his son Willie John AUCOIN. He will also be remembered by his many relatives in Nova Scotia. He is predeceased by his parents John and Judith AUCOIN, his sisters Mary Ellen and Elizabeth, and his brothers Paddy, Johnny, Jerome, Alex and Leo. GIBSON, John (November 14, 1910-November 3, 2005)
Peacefully, surrounded by his family at the Brant Centre in Burlington, Ontario, on November 3, 2005, a few days before his 95th birthday, John left his family to join the love of his life, Viola COTE. Born in Bolton, England in 1910, John immigrated to Canada in 1912 with his parents, the late Francis GIBSON and the late Mary Ann QUEENAN. John will be sadly missed by his four daughters, Irene (the late Eugene GAUTHIER) of Montreal, Dawn (Bob FORTIN) of Ottawa, Joy (Tom CLANCY) of Burlington, and Gay Rose PAGE of Burlington. Loving grandfather to Patricia, Lisa, and Steven (GAUTHIER,) Serena and Samantha (FORTIN,) Samantha and Bob (CLANCY,) Jeffrey, Andrew, Brandon and Meggy (PAGE). Loving great-grandfather to Andrew, Jasmine, Stephen, Jane Eugenie, Faith, Blake, Gabrielle, Samuel, Mary-Anne and baby Carter. Our last 5 days with Dad, as he journeyed home, were filled with love, laughter and celebration of a long life well lived. Our heartfelt thanks to the Angels at the Brant Centre for their loving care. At John's request, the visitation will be private. Interment will take place in Montreal on November 12th. GOLDWIN, Terry
While surrounded by his loving family, Terry passed away after a lengthy illness in his 63rd year on Wednesday, December 21st, 2005, at the St. Catharines General Hospital. Terry was a principal/teacher for 30 years with the Lincoln County Separate School Board, former president of the Lincoln O.E.C.T.A. unit and the C.Y.O. Minor Hockey Association. He was also a past president and life time member of the St. Catharines Junior B Falcons Hockey Club. Terry spent his retirement continuing his involvement within the elementary school system. He was a member of the "Old Farts Club" and always a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Beloved husband for 39 years of Pat (GAUTHIER) and father of Jimmy (Lisa,) Michael, Samantha and Sarah. Grandpa G will also be missed by granddaughters Brittany, Alyssa and Tymara. Predeceased by his precious granddaughter Violet (2002), parents Walter and Thelma and brother Tim. Terry's family will receive visitors at the George Darte Funeral Chapel, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Monday, December 26th from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, December 27th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, 67 Church Street on Wednesday, December 28th at 10 a.m. Vigil Prayers will be held at the funeral home on Monday evening at 7: 30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Scleroderma Society would be appreciated by the family.
