Peacefully at the William Osler Health Centre - Etobicoke Campus

and Ernie WEISS and their family (Michael, Christopher, Laurene,
Joel, Eden, and Noah) of Guelph, Isabel
McKERIHEN of Toronto,
and Kathleen and Dennis
MILES of Mississauga. Dorothy's music
career began in Guelph, where she was born. Her mother, Lily
Willson GATIRD, was a gifted pianist who worked in the theatre
and formerly taught music in England. Her father, Edward "Teddy"
GATIRD, danced in a number of variety shows. Dorothy's love for
music and dance was fostered by her parents and her piano teacher,
Bessie HILL, who was well known in the Guelph community. Having
won many piano competitions as a child, it was inevitable that
Dorothy would make music her life's work. Her varied career included
playing for classes at the Young Women's Christian Association,
for Modern Dance classes at Columbia University's Teachers' College,
for the Boris Volkoff Ballet Studio, as well as Boris Volkoff's
Canadian Ballet Company, a forerunner of the National Ballet
of Canada, for the Banff School of Fine Arts from 1958 until
1994, for Contemporary Dance classes at the University of Toronto.
Dorothy accompanied Toronto Board of Education choirs at the
Kiwanis Festival, and for more than 60 years she worked at Edith
L. Groves School/Heydon Park Secondary School, where she played
for physical education and vocal music classes and many school
events. Dorothy
GATIRD enriched the lives of all who knew her.
She had the talent to be a concert pianist, but in keeping with
her gentle, retiring nature she chose the accompanist's role.
