Barrie father and son killed in plane crash
By Robin MacLENNAN,
Monday,
August 08, 2005
The surviving pilot involved in a deadly midair crash over Kempenfelt
Bay Saturday afternoon didn't see the other plane until it was
too late, says a Transportation Safety Board investigator.
“Both of the aircraft operate on visual flight rules,” said Rick
PILSON. “Basically, you are operating on a see- and-be-seen basis.&rdquo
The two planes, both Cessna A185F models equipped with pontoons,
collided in midair at about 3: 20 p.m.
One pilot was able to land safely and taxi his plane to shore,
but the other spiralled out of control into the water.
Rescuers pulled the bodies of George “Bud”
LEE, 71, and his 47-year-old
son, Dan, both of Barrie, from the wreckage about 20-minutes
after the crash.
A post-mortem Sunday showed both men died of severe trauma caused
by the impact of the crash.
Larry MARTIN was childhood Friends with Dan, his brother, Tim,
and sister, Sandra, who all attended Warnica Public School.
He said Dan was an avid competitive snowmobiler.
“We grew up together, but then you go your own directions. But,
I know the family well,”
MARTIN said, adding that his mother
worked with Bud
LEE at Kolmar Canada in Barrie until
LEE retired
a few weeks ago.
The plane was pulled out of the water late Saturday night and
taken to the Currie Truck Centre north of Barrie where it will
be examined by investigators today.
PILSON interviewed the surviving pilot. They say he took off
from the Springwater Barrie Airpark on Saturday afternoon before
heading out over the water, demonstrating his plane for a potential
buyer who sat in the back seat. Another pilot was also on board.
Immediately before the crash,
PILSON said the pilot, an experienced
flyer with thousands of hours in the air, flew a circle around
the bay, landed on the water and then took off again.
Around the same time, the
LEEs' plane also took off from the
water.
The planes collided about 250 feet in the air.
“The propeller struck the right rear float of the fatal plane,&rdquo
PILSON said, adding the tail of the float plane was sheared off
on impact.
The HILL-
WHITSON family had been sailing off the Barrie shoreline
for about an hour when the two low-flying planes caught their
attention.
“I don't think they had any idea that they were in each other's
airspace,” said Karen
HILL-
WHITSON. “It's hard to believe what
we saw.&rdquo
Her 11-year-old son, Dalton, watched the planes collide, about
200 metres from their sailboat.
“At first I thought they were doing a trick or something,” he
said. “They were getting so close and I thought, ‘Wow, what are
they doing?' &rdquo
“It all happened so fast, and then all you could see were the
pontoons in the water and the plane was upside down.&rdquo
After radioing for help, the family dropped the sail and hurried
to the crash scene where more than a dozen boaters were trying
to help.
“I saw one guy come up to the plane, and he didn't even stop
his boat, he just jumped out into the water,” Karen said.
Derrick WAGNER was nearby on a Sea Doo when the float plane crashed.
He was in the water within minutes, working with other citizens
to free the two men trapped inside.
“We tried, but we couldn't do anything,”
WAGNER said. “We saw
them, but we couldn't get to them.
“After about 15 minutes we had to give up because the fuel was
all over the place. It was burning everyone.&rdquo
WAGNER returned to shore and was taken by ambulance to Royal
Victoria Hospital where he was decontaminated and treated for
a first-degree burn on his back.
“Everyone was trying to help,” he said. “People were throwing
us masks, but they were all too small and the fuel was just too
much.&rdquo
Firefighters, paramedics and police rushed to the scene, but
the rescue efforts were hampered by the location of the crash.
“Something like this, we will definitely be responding as fast
as possible,” said Barrie police Sgt. Dave
GOODBRAND. “But you
take the water, and the location, it always complicates the rescue
effort when it happens on water because now everybody's got to
get onto boats and get out there and that's not our primary mode
of transportation.&rdquo
A Barrie police officer used a private citizen's boat to get
to the crash site within minutes, and assist with the rescue
effort.
An off-duty York Regional Police diver was also in the water
helping.
Air ambulances stood by at the Southshore Community Centre, but
were not used. One victim was dead at the scene, and the other
was transported to Royal Victoria Hospital, where he was pronounced
dead, GOODBRAND said.
Investigators say it's “close to a miracle” that three people
on one of the planes walked away with just minor injuries. The
pilot was treated at hospital for an injured knee.
“It's absolutely amazing,”
PILSON said. “It's amazing, almost
a miracle that these three people were able to walk away from
this. It's amazing that the pilot was able to regain control
and land the plane safely.
“He said at first it was difficult, but as the plane descended
to the water, he was able to get control of it.&rdquo
After landing, the pilot taxied slowly to the dock at the Barrie
marina where his boat was turned over to investigators.
Gus KRISTJANSSON was watching from Minet's Point Park.
“I heard a loud thump, but I don't know if that was the planes
colliding or the one plane landing in the water,” he said. “When
I looked, I saw the plane land and I followed it all the way
to shore. He made a supurb landing and then took a slow, straight
path to the dock.
“I can't believe he was able to land like that after crashing
into another plane. It was a beautiful landing.&rdquo
While some witnesses: said it took too long for rescuers to reach
the downed plane,
KRISTJANSSON praised the response of emergency
workers.
“I think the response here was amazing,” he said. “Within minutes
there were firefighters and then paramedics and police.
“It was so quick, and there must have been about 60 people here
all trying to help.&rdquo
Described as avid pilots, fishermen and snowmobilers, Bud and
Dan LEE were long-time Barrie residents.
The are survived by wife and mother Barb, daughter and sister
Sandy PRIEST, and son and brother Tim
LEE.
Bud was also grandfather
to Colton and Jessi and brother to Jo
GAREY and families. Visitation
will be held at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 201 Minet's
Point Rd., on Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from
