I Remember -- Bob
HUNTER
By Alison HOGAN-
GARCIA,
Tuesday,
May 10, 2005, Page S9
Alison HOGAN-
GARCIA, of Victoria, writes about Bob
HUNTER, whose
obituary appeared on May 3.
He was part of a circle of Friends I hung out with in the early
70s, drinking endless trays of draft beer at the Cecil Hotel
in Vancouver long before it became a strip bar. The evenings
I spent at that soggy, terry-cloth-covered table were interesting,
to say the least. As a fledgling member of the eco-crowd, I had
little to contribute, but as a listener and an observer, I always
found the conversation fascinating, and it usually became more
vociferous in direct relation to the amount of nasty beer consumed
over the course of an evening.
Over the years I read his books, including Warriors of the Rainbow
and Occupied Canada, which became a valuable resource for my
undergraduate studies in Canadian history. Of all his books,
though, it is 2030: Confronting Thermageddon in Our Lifetime,
which got me right where I live. Ever since I finished it, I've
been hauling around my own personal carbon cloud and can't seem
to rid myself of the imagery Bob's powerful words created. I
can only hope that more people will pick it up now that Bob is
gone. It should be required reading for every high school student
in the country.
