Survived by her children, Gerrard and Marilyn, of Owen Sound, John and Doris, of Chepstow and Mary KOEBEL, of Walkerton; grandchildren, David POWERS, Crystal POWERS, Stephanie McQUEEN and Chad CULBERT, Jacob and Melinda KOEBEL; great-grandchildren, Brittany KOEBEL, Isaac KOEBEL and Brayden McQUEEN. Also survived by her sisters, Rita FRITZ, of Chepstow and Joan and Edgar BESTER, of Walkerton. Predeceased by her husband, Stephen; brothers, Nicholas, Joseph and Peter; sister, Irene BECHBERGER and parents, Peter and Mary (ANSTETT) LANG. Visitation at Cameron Funeral Home, Walkerton, on Friday from 2: 00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. C.W.L. Of Orangeville and formerly of Saint Thomas on Thursday, September 29, 2005, at the Headwaters Health Care Centre, Orangeville, in her 81st year. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Joseph G. SZABOLCS and dearly loved mother of Ursula and her husband Tom ROBERTSON of Vancouver and Peter and his wife Catherine SZABOLCS of Orangeville. Much loved grandmother of Eva and Joey ROBERTSON, Natasha, Jayme and Travis SZABOLCS. Dear sister of Gunther RAFFEL of Germany and the late Reiner RAFFEL and the late Ingrid FRITZ. Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Ursula was born in Germany on July 27, 1925, the daughter of the late Paul and Gertrude RAFFEL. She came to Canada in 1950 and was a long time member of Holy Angels' Church. Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas until Monday morning and then to Holy Angels' Church for Mass of the Christian Burial at 10: 00 a.m. Interment to follow in Holy Angels' Cemetery. Suddenly, on March 16, 2005, at London Health Science Centre, London, Ontario, at age 84. Born in Toronto, he was the son of the late Orville and Charlotte WATSON. Bill served overseas as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force, 1942-1944, (No. 6 Bomber Group). After many years with Ontario Hydro, he took up a teaching career at secondary schools and as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education, U of T. Predeceased by his brother Orville, he is survived by sons John, Ian and Alec (Kim FRITZ,) his sister Mary (Douglas ANGLIN) and grandchildren Hannah, Gabrielle and Noel. Bill will also be mourned by nieces, nephews and Friends. RALEIGH, Shirley Ruth Howsam
78, passed away on September 1, 2005 while visiting with her family in British Columbia. She was born in St Louis, Missouri, but spent her formative years in Calgary, Alberta, where she graduated from St. Hildas' School for Girls in 1944. She received her Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. In 1949 she married her high school sweetheart Peter S. HOWSAM in Vancouver, a marriage that lasted 52 years, until Mr. HOWSAM passed away in 2001. The HOWSAMs lived in Montreal, Philadelphia, and Toronto, before moving to Raleigh in 1970. Shirley and Peter became American Citizens in 1977. Shirley was a gracious hostess. They opened their home for many Burroughs Wellcome Co. events and will be remembered for their annual 'Boxing Day' parties. Shirley was active within her community. She was a Past President of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society, a docent at the Executive Mansion for over 33 years, a long time volunteer and supporter of the North Carolina Museum of Art - where she served on numerous committees. She also acted as Chairman of the Volunteer Board and served as Secretary on the Board of the North Carolina Art Society for over four years. She gave 12 years of dedicated service to the Duke Childrens' Golf Classic as Co-Chairman of the Spouses and Guests Committee and received the Duke Childrens' 'Volunteer of the Year Award' in 1991. Shirley continuously gave her gifts of time, talent and treasure to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where she served in many areas. She was Past President of the Episcopal Churchwomen, a Stephen Minister and Leader. She served 3 years on the Diocesan Episcopal Churchwomen Executive Board as the United Thank Offering Coordinator. She was a member of the Iron Dukes, a supporter and great booster and fan of Duke University sports, a member of the Junior League of Raleigh, a member of North Ridge Country Club, and a member of the Monthly Investors' Club and the English Speaking Union. Shirley was a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her four loving children and their spouses; Gary R. HOWSAM and his wife Brenda of Toronto, Ontario; Jeffrey P. HOWSAM and his wife Cindy of Raleigh; Valear H. FRIZELLE and her husband Larry of Toronto, Ontario; and Irish H. DUNLAP and her husband Owen, also of Raleigh. She is also survived by her seven beloved grandchildren: Melissa (27), Meryl (23), Joshua (20), Jessica (16), Peyton (11), Ali (9) and Claire (8.) She is also survived by her sister Val SHAW of Sidney, British Columbia, her brother Lance ECKARDT of Vancouver, British Columbia, her cousins Gale and Joe CURRIE of Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, Michael EAKIN of Kamloops, British Columbia, Robert KERLIN of Toronto, Ontario, along with several nephews and nieces and many dear Friends. Shirley was dearly loved and will be remembered fondly; her smile, warmth, compassion and devotion to all of those whose lives she touched will be greatly missed. Although Jack was a history specialist for 39 years, his first love was always music. Having been taught percussion by his beloved father, Jack played drums in a combo at King Edward Public School when the students marched into school. He then went on to play in the Harmony Orchestra walking along Bloor Street on Sunday mornings with his friend Vic FELBRILL, drum and violin in hand. Jack also played in the Harbord Orchestra and sang in early television, choir and grandstand shows. Jack was a member of the Initial Festival Singers at the Stratford Festival Inauguration. Throughout his career, he conducted numerous school and community choirs and book shows, ending with seventeen years in Florida with a choir of thirty retirees.
