Teen takes own life at 17
The once fun-loving student was troubled by mental illness.
By Joe MATYAS,
Free
Press
Reporter
Until he reached puberty, Obed
VASQUEZ was a normal, active,
fun-loving boy.
With the coming of physical maturation, he began to hear and
see things that sometimes weren't there.
On Saturday night, at the age of 17, Obed quietly terminated
his life at home while his parents briefly visited the new home
of Friends.
It was a tragic ending to a beautiful day for his family.
"It went from the sunniest of perfect days to the darkest of
nights," said Eli
VASQUEZ, his 18-year-old brother.
Obed spent the entire day at Springbank Park with his parents,
three brothers, sister and other family members, walking, talking,
joking, picnicking and playing soccer.
"We all had a lot of fun," said Eli. "Obed, too. He was a really
funny guy. He could make us all laugh."
But the teen who loved music and basketball was also troubled
and embarrassed that he had to take medication for a mental illness,
said his mother, Mirta
CAMPOS.
"We had to force him to take his pills," she said. "He wouldn't
take them if we didn't. He didn't want to be sick. He just wanted
to be a regular guy."
Obed had just recently switched to weekly injections, an adjustment
for his bodily chemistry, she said.
There's still a lot of stigma associated with schizophrenia,
she said.
"People don't treat people with a mental illness the way they
treat someone with cancer. They don't understand the symptoms
or how to deal with them."
Obed's behaviour was quite normal most of the time, said Eli,
"but people sometimes freaked out when he was seeing or hearing
things."
The passing of Obed has hit the
VASQUEZ family hard, said Ward
5 Coun. Sandy
WHITE/WHYTE.
"They're very sweet people," she said. "This tragedy is emotionally
difficult for them."
Obed's father, Moïses, and
CAMPOS came to Canada in 1987 from
the United States where they had fled to escape the brutality
of civil war in Guatemala and
El Salvador, their respective homelands.
They've endured financial hardship and a mental health system
that isn't as culturally aware as it could be, said
WHITE/WHYTE.
Paying for a funeral will be difficult because the family lives
on a minimum-wage budget, she said.
A local funeral director estimated the industry average cost
of traditional funeral arrangements at about $6,000.
A trust fund has been set up to help the family defray funeral
costs and raise money for a local mental health program -- Prevention
and Early Intervention Program for Psychoses, said
WHITE/WHYTE.
Called the Obed Memorial Fund, the fund has been established
at the TD Canada Trust branch at Dundas and Lyle streets.
Donations can be made at any of the bank's branches, said Sarah
HORNER of TD Canada Trust.
Andrew FRANCIS, owner of the Alex P. Keaton pub at Albert and
Talbot streets, is also setting up an Obed Vasquez Memorial Fund
and planning a fundraiser for the family from noon to 5 p.m.
on July 23.
"Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the family and for their mental
health cause by August 30," he said.
Moises VASQUEZ
Jr.,
Obed's older brother, said the family has
been deeply touched by Francis's offer of help and by the support
of neighbours and Friends who've visited and left flowers in
front of the family's house.
They've included a stream of teenagers from Beal secondary school,
where Obed was in Grade 11.

DENT,
George
Mitchell "
Mitch," B.A., LL.B.
Mitchell passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on
Friday, January 7, 2005, at Ottawa, in his 89th year. Mitchell
was born in Ottawa on November 10, 1916, the
son of Dr. Clarence
M. and Mrs. Hazel R.
DENT.
Mitchell was the beloved husband of
Theresa, cherished father of Mitchell (Nathalie), Roger (Susan),
Melanie and Cynthia (Nigel). He was affectionately known as Pa
to grandchildren Sam, Joey, David, Meredith, Evelyn, Liam, Georgia
and Benjamin. He is survived by his sister Martha
COUGHLIN and
sister-in-law Elena
DENT and was predeceased by his brother Lionel
and his sister Frances. He graduated from Glebe Collegiate in
1934 and the University of Toronto in 1939. After attending Osgoode
Hall, he was called to the bar in 1942. He then joined the Royal
Artillery Reserve Unit. Mitchell embarked on a legal career that
was to span over half a century. After articling in Toronto,
he moved to Ottawa where he acted on many cases for the Wartime
Prices and Trade Board. He opened his own office in 1947 and
in 1957 formed a partnership with Jim
FRANCIS.
Mitchell kept
up an active practice until 1995. He was also active in the Ottawa
real estate market. Music, especially opera, was one of Mitchell's
great loves. He played trumpet in the Glebe Collegiate Orchestra
and the University of Toronto band. In 1939, he traveled to Europe
as a member of the orchestra on the S.S. Statendam. Mitchell
belonged to many organizations over his career but was especially
proud of his long association with the Ottawa Gyro Club, of which
he served as President in 1949, 1961 and 1988. He was one of
the longest standing members of the Rivermead Golf Club, having
been affiliated with the club for over 60 years. He was recently
made an honorary member. Mitchell was a voracious reader. He
had an uncanny ability to retain what he read, which made him
a formidable opponent in family games of Trivial Pursuit. He
took a strong interest in politics and stock markets and was
always ready to debate the latest developments. In his spare
time, he loved to relax at the family cottages at Constance Bay
and Calabogie Peaks. For Mitchell, relaxation often involved
construction or landscaping. His earthmoving projects at Constance
Bay were legendary in family circles. The last years saw Mitchell
struggle with Parkinson's disease, which shrouded his greatest
talents-his eloquence, his wit and his sense of humour. He handled
his illness with strength, dignity, perseverance and determination.
We thought the world of him. In lieu of flowers, the family has
requested that donations be made to the Parkinson's Society of
Ottawa Carleton. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse,
Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa. on Sunday, January
9 from 2: 00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel at 11: 30 a.m. on Monday,

RATHGEB was born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Moving
to Toronto at an early age, he was educated at Upper Canada College
and the University of Toronto (Zeta Psi). After leaving Upper
Canada, he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (13755) serving
in Western Canada. Transferring to the Royal Canadian Navy he
was a decorated officer, serving in the North Atlantic, Norwegian
Sea, the Bay of Biscay and the invasion of Europe. Following
the war, Chuck joined his father as proprietor of Comstock International
Ltd. for over forty years in the field of mechanical and electrical
construction with major undertakings across Canada, the United
States and around the globe. He was a director of many major
corporations both here and abroad and was associated closely
with various charitable organizations. Chuck's big avocation
was sports. He was at various times a Canadian member of the
Commonwealth Cricket Team, a mountain climber (Canadian Rockies
and Alps), a big game hunter (earning the Explorers' Club 'gold
bracelet for big six' animals), member of the Canadian Marlin
and Tuna Teams, 'Offshore' Power Boat Racer (Miami-Nassau, London-Monte
Carlo), Cresta Rider and World Cup Bobsledder, as Manager of
The Gold Medal Canadian Olympic Bob-Sled Team, Innsbruck, Austria

to run a small but successful thoroughbred horse- racing stable.
In the air, Chuck was an accomplished gas and hot air balloonist
(Trans Canada, Trans Alpine), a glider pilot and a jet pilot,
setting a World record Atlantic crossing in a Canadian CL41 jet.
But the sport he enjoyed most was golf! In a different vein,
he produced a Broadway play 'Staircase', a major film 'Fahrenheit
451' and he also did a brief, if memorable stint, as a rock promoter,
staging a 'Doors' concert. The family will receive Friends at

Ruth Alice
HOWES
By Heather
FRANCIS,
Thursday,
November 17, 2005, Page A24
Teacher, farmer, store keeper, gardener, baker, grandmother.
Born February 17, 1901, in Winchester, Ontario Died May 17 in
Winchester of natural causes, aged 104.
When Ruth died, it surprised all of us who knew her. She had
survived countless surgeries and illnesses and, no matter how
ill, she always got better. Her early life no doubt helped her
form her strong will, willingness to make do, and love for her
community.
Ruth Alice
HOLMES was born on a farm just outside of Winchester,
Ontario She was the seventh child of an eventual 11 to Nathaniel
and Annettie
HOLMES.
She was fortunate that her parents valued
her education and arranged for her to board in Winchester after
she survived rheumatoid fever and was too weak to walk the return
trip to high school.
She trained as a teacher and taught for several years at the
one-room schoolhouse she had attended herself, just outside Winchester.
But her teaching career was interrupted when she got married
in 1927, as married women were not allowed to teach at the time.
She loved recounting how the school inspector tried to convince
her not to marry, but she wed Gerald
HOWES of a neighbouring
farm.
They moved to a farm down the road from her old home and the
schoolhouse and Ruth began her second career as a farm wife and
mother. Her children, Joyce and Jean, became able hands with
all the labour that a dairy and crop farm entailed.
Jerry loved horses but wasn't so crazy about milking cattle,
so he and Ruth decided to sell their farm, except for a small
severance, to open a general store, gas bar, and hobby farm,
just up the road from the farm.
During this time she started teaching again. In later years,
she recalled with much fondness the children she had taught,
the troublemakers and eager ones alike, and the gifts she received,
and the skating parties that were held. Several former students
visited at her 100th birthday party and were amazed she still
remembered them.
It was in the fall of 1975, when their long-dreamt-of retirement
home was being built, that Jerry died of an aneurysm. Ruth had
to cope with ensuring the rest of the house was built properly
and with furnishing it. Whenever I visited during the next 27
years she always had delicious baked goods and casseroles on
hand. Food from her garden was a staple in summer. Her letters
told of her beautiful flower gardens, Friends visiting, church
activities attended, her latest crochet or rug-hooking project,
interest in whether we had passed the last term, and thoughtful
gestures of family and Friends.
When she was 90, she had a bad bout of pneumonia. Through her
strong will, she grew well enough to go home with the support
of visits by a homemaker and a nurse. She continued to cook her
own meals and tend to her gardens. Although they were scaled
back by the time she was 101, she still planted her own geraniums,
gladioli, potatoes, and tomatoes. In her letters that year, she
also spoke of making peach preserves and Christmas cake and pudding.
Unfortunately, in 2002 she was unable to live on her own any
longer and had to make the farthest permanent move of her life:
three kilometres to the nursing home in Winchester. Still the
perfect hostess, she apologized to visitors for not having goodies
to serve. It was my turn to bring her cookies, but she would
make sure to walk me down the hallway when I left.
After breaking her hip this spring, she rallied and survived
for a week, but she just did not have the strength to survive
this latest mishap.
Although she was not able to die in her own home, she did die
in Winchester after a quiet, but inspiring life.
Heather is Ruth's granddaughter.

Irwin▲ (1921-2005)
Businessman - Sportsman Charles (Chuck) Irwin
RATHGEB passed
away peacefully at home in Toronto on June 24, 2005 at the age
of 83. Chuck is survived by his loving wife and friend of 58
years, Rosemary
CLARKE, originally of Montreal and nephew Thomas
SCEATS, his wife
Fabienne▲ and nieces Charlotte and Martha. Loving
thanks for continuing care to the house staff Tony, Gloria, Teresa
and to Al and Sarah of the Bahamas. Special thanks to Dr.
UNG
of the Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre and
to Dr. Robert
FRANCIS of Medcan. The Toronto Community Care Access
Centre's▲ palliative team headed by Dr. Russell
GOLDMAN are to
be commended for their loving care and support, as are his health
care givers - Trudy, Joyce, Linda, Nellie, Valerio, George and
Ken. Chuck
- 1964. For many years, he ran the Comstock Ford Auto Racing
Team, competing on major tracks in Canada, the U.S. and Europe
and major rallies in Canada, Asia and Europe. He also found time
to run a small but successful thoroughbred horse-racing stable.
The family will receive Friends at
the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue
(south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June
28. The funeral will take place at Deer Park United Church, 129
