Taser-linked death probed
Canadian Press
Beamsville -- A 39-year-old man is dead after Niagara Regional
Police used a taser during his arrest -- only days after the
force started using the stun guns.
"The▼ taser was seized for examination," said Rose
BLISS, a spokesperson
for the province's Special Investigations Unit.
The Special Investigations Unit said police went to a neighbourhood
in Beamsville, west of St. Catharines, early yesterday following
reports of numerous break-ins in the area.
While on the scene, police tried to arrest a suspect identified
as James FOLDI, the Special Investigations Unit said in a release.
It was at that time the stun gun was drawn, a weapon Niagara
police said they've only been using for a week.
FOLDI was brought into police custody but was taken to hospital
after officers said the suspect appeared to be in "medical distress."
He died in hospital.
Although▼ the taser was used during the arrest,
BLISS refused
to say whether the suspect was actually hit by the taser.
An autopsy took place yesterday afternoon in Hamilton and was
attended by the eight-person Special Investigations Unit team
investigating the case.
BLISS said the majority of Special Investigations Unit investigations
last no longer than 30 days, but was unsure how long this case
would last.
"We're not going to be rushing to meet any type of deadline,
our priority is to be thorough."
The Special Investigations Unit investigates police and civilian
incidents when someone is killed or seriously injured.
FOLDI's death comes the day after a Surrey, British Columbia,
man died after being tasered and pepper-sprayed by police during
his arrest.
Tasers emit a jolt of 50,000 volts.

in a news release.
Police used a Taser and pepper spray in efforts to subdue the
man. when he stopped breathing, officers started giving him cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation until paramedics arrived. He was taken to hospital,
where he was pronounced dead.

FOLEY -- Dispatch:
By Naomi CARNIOL,
Saturday,
January 1, 2005 - Page M5
Lauren
Bess
Dahl
FOLEY was on her way to a successful career
as an artist.
In August, actor Danny Masterson of That '70s Show hosted a showing
of her work in Los Angeles and celebrities such as Jason Lee
bought pieces.
But on December 12, Ms.
DAHL -- Lolo to her Friends -- died in
a car accident on a windy mountain road in Hollywood, California.
She was 26.
She grew up in North York and was interested in art even as a
girl, her sister Melinda
DAHL, 23, says. She had attended Cardinal
Carter Academy for the Arts in North York, and at age 17 moved
to Queen and Ossington. "She loved the area because it was so
artsy," her mother, Sara
DAHL, says.
By 1999, Lolo's drawings were featured at the Queen Street Gallery.
But she had already moved to Los Angeles, where she apprenticed
under artist Bryten Goss.
Sara DAHL describes her daughter as outgoing, but the subject
of her artwork was often morbid. Her daughter drew a series featuring
the victims of serial killers. One of those pieces hangs in her
mother's living room. "It's of a woman. She's obviously a dead
woman with her eyes open and in her hand is a card that says,
'Ted Bundy,' " her mother says. "It's hard to tell whether it's
a photograph or a picture because the detail is so fantastic."
To see Ms.
DAHL's work, visit http://www.lolodahl.com. A fund
is being created to preserve her art and help other young artists.
Donations can be made at 416-285-1095 or csteph1008@rogers.com.

DENT,
Dora
Elizabeth (née
FOLLETT)
February 25, 2005 on Quadra Island, British Columbia in her 90th
year. The eldest daughter of the late Joseph V.
FOLLETT and Mary
Elizabeth FOLLETT
(JOHNSTON,)
Dora was born in Calgary on May
19, 1915. One of four children, she was educated in Calgary,
attended Mount Royal College before moving to the University
of Toronto from which she graduated with a B.A. in 1939. In 1943,
she married Albert Edward
DENT
(Bert) and together they enjoyed
a wonderful 50 years until his death in 1993. They lived in Toronto,
Deep River, and finally Port Hope, Ontario. Predeceased by one
brother, Bert and her sister Emily, she is survived by her brother,
Dr. A.V. FOLLETT
(Marg) of Calgary, Alberta. Left to mourn her
passing are son Peter (Dorothy
HARVEY) of Galiano Island, British
Columbia, daughter Judy
ODELL
(Jim
MOATS) of Quadra Island, British
Columbia, grandchildren Elizabeth and Geordie
DENT,
Liam and
Alex ODELL, and great grandchildren Greyson and Sophia
HARPER.
Dora's passion was music. As a young girl she won many festivals
and sang in numerous recitals in Calgary. During her university
days, she earned money as a paid soloist in Toronto. After taking
time off to raise her family, she returned to university in 1960-62
and qualified as a music teacher. For many years she was a music
specialist servicing the elementary schools in Port Hope. She
sang in the senior choir of Port Hope United Church as well as
directing the Boys Choir. After her working life ended, she continued
to support musical and community endeavours, both as a founding
member of the Friends of Music and the Probus Club. When she
retired she and Bert enjoyed many fine years and trips together.
After his death, she continued to travel: to Africa, Australia
and New Zealand, China, the Caribbean and the Czech Republic.
Several of these trips were taken with her children. She continued
to make regular visits to England, maintaining close relationships
with Bert's family. In 2001, she fulfilled a life-long dream
by visiting Newfoundland, the birthplace of her father. Last
year, on her own initiative, she decided to leave Port Hope and
move to the British Columbia Coast to be closer to her children.
She chose to live in a retirement home in Victoria but failing
health mandated a move to her daughter's home. In her words,
"My get up and go got up and went." Her legacy is in the number
of former students who say with pride, "Mrs. Dent taught me music!"
and in both her children who have pursued careers in music. A
celebration of life concert will be held in Port Hope on May
19, 2005. If you wish to honour her memory, please write letters
in support of music programs in the schools, donate to a charity
of your choice, and raise a glass of her favourite Crown Royal
in celebration of a life well and fully lived.
