FLAVELLE, Sir Joseph Wesley, 1939
Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - Page S9
Meat packer, financier and philanthropist born in Peterborough, Ontario, on February 15, 1858.
A man who truly lived by the Protestant work ethic, he came from poor beginnings to be chairman of the Bank of Commerce, head of Simpsons department stores and president of the largest pork packer in the British Empire. Prominent in the Methodist Church, he also played roles in the ongoing development of the University of Toronto and the Canadian National Railway. During the First World War, he at first gained credit for running the Imperial Munitions Board, but then suffered accusations of having been a wartime profiteer. He was later cleared of suspicion and in 1917 was given a baronetcy -- the last for a resident Canadian.
