Psychiatrist born in Poland in 1913.
Henryk FENIGSTEIN was a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp
who later counselled fellow survivors and their families, yet
died in disgrace. A week before his death, he had pleaded guilty
to sexual misconduct before the College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Ontario and his licence was revoked. When the victim came
forward, he immediately resigned from the college, closed his
practice and then said nothing at the hearing. In an agreed statement
of facts, he admitted enticing a young woman to have sex with
him over a six-year. The incident overshadowed his contribution
as a pioneer in treating what is called the concentration-camp
syndrome. He was himself torn by guilt over the fact that he
had survived while others perished. "I'm repaying the dead --
my first wife, my relatives my Friends -- for my luck," he said.
He had immigrated to Canada in 1948. He died at home in his sleep

Behind-the-scenes activist left legacy of advances
By Randy RICHMOND,
Free
Press
Reporter
A cross-section of London's civic life -- politicians, bureaucrats,
journalists and activists -- will crowd into a London bar tomorrow
to celebrate the life of a longtime, behind-the-scenes mover
and shaker. Mary
ZELINSKI, who died January 31 at 58, was many
things to many people.
To reporters,
ZELINSKI was a sharp-eyed critic of local politics
with great news tips and gossip.
To entrepreneurs and community groups, she was a valuable ally
in the federal government.
To politicians, she could be either a pain in the butt or a best
friend.
"She has done a lot of good for the community," although few
ordinary Londoners know it, said longtime friend Terry
FENN.
The two became Friends in the early 1970s when
FENN was running
for school board trustee.
He was on stage at an all-candidates meeting and
ZELINSKI was
a community activist in Northbrae.
"She proceeded to chew up a candidate pretty good. I was the
next speaker and I was sweating bullets."
But FENN passed
ZELINSKI's credibility test and the two became
Friends.
The pair realized half the city was not represented on the school
board in citywide elections and over the objections of many in
the old guard, got the ward system in place.
ZELINSKI worked for the federal government's Community Futures
program, helping community groups get funding for their projects.
"We were helping people get back to work. Mary was a great collaborator.
She leveraged money with other partners, municipal governments
and other federal departments, school boards,"
FENN said.
In the 1990s,
ZELINSKI moved to Industry Canada, providing loans
to new business projects, including Chatham-Kent's ethanol-from-corn
plant.
"Middlesex County owes her so much," county chief administrative
officer Bill
RAYBURN said. "Yet probably very few people knew
her name."
ZELINSKI approached
RAYBURN on his first day on the job to say
Middlesex wasn't getting its share of business loans.
"Mary was the kind of person when she recognized an injustice
in the system, she would work with people to make amends."
ZELINSKI worked with everyone, regardless of political stripe,
trading information with reporters and politicians alike, seeming
to know exactly whom to contact to get things done, said friend
Anne SMITH.
"She saw the big picture,"
FENN said. "If you wanted to do something
that wasn't right, she wouldn't let you get away with it."
ZELINSKI's health suffered the past few years, but she remained
a keen critic of city hall affairs, fighting most recently over
London's loose heritage policies.
"She's up in heaven now, doing her knitting and shaking her head
at all the politicians everywhere,
RAYBURN said.
ZELINSKI leaves her husband, Peter, and son, John.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Chaucer's,
122 Carling St.
