Man killed in weekend crash
By Robin MacLENNAN,
Tuesday,
September 06, 2005
An Innisfil man was killed Sunday afternoon when the car he was
driving rolled several times in a ditch and slammed into a tree.
Josef LUCKAS, 45, was not wearing a seat-belt and was thrown
from the car. South Simcoe police are looking for witnesses: to
the fatal crash that happened at approximately 4 p.m., when a
1989 Black Mercury Topaz driven by
LUCKAS was travelling eastbound
on Big Bay Point Road, east of the 20th Sideroad.
The
Topaz had just finished passing another car when
LUCKAS lost
control, driving into the south ditch where the car rolled several
times and struck a tree.
Big Bay Point Road was closed for five hours while collision
reconstructionists pieced the accident back together.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident
to call Const. Jon
ELLIS in the collision reconstruction office
at 436-2141, ext. 2018.
LUCKAS is the sixth person to die on Simcoe County roads in the
past month. Five victims, including
LUCKAS, were not wearing
seat-belts, police have confirmed.
Two people were killed near Stayner on August 24, after the pick-up
truck the were in was involved in a crash and they were thrown
from the vehicle.
A teen driver was killed and two of his three passengers were
also seriously injured in a car crash August 18 on the southbound
ramp of the Highway 400 extension, just north of Barrie.
On August 12, a Toronto teen was killed in a crash on Highway
400 at the Highway 89 on ramp. Again, the driver lost control
and none of the car's occupants were wearing seat-belts.
Police are urging motorists to buckle up.
“Seat-belts do work. Wear them. They save lives, as we clearly
learned earlier this week,” said Barrie Ontario Provincial Police
Const. Janet
SMALL, referring to a fatal head-on crash in the
southbound lanes of Highway 400 in early August.
April SOBISCH, an Alliston woman continues to recover in hospital,
and SMALL said she survived the crash because she was wearing
a seat-belt.
“Absolutely,” she said. “If she wasn't wearing her seat-belt,
she would not have survived that crash.&rdquo
SOBISCH's seven-month-old son was rescued from the wrecked car
without a scratch because he was properly strapped into a child
car seat.
“April is going to be able to hold her child again because of
that,”
SMALL said.

and signed up as an officer in training in 1942. During his training
on the West Coast he courted his future wife, Audrey
PUTNAM of
Winnipeg, and was posted to England in the spring of 1943. Graham
served in the 5th Canadian Armoured Division as a Lieutenant
commanding a platoon of the 1st Canadian Motor Ambulance Convoy
evacuating wounded from the front. After the conclusion of the
Italian campaign Graham's unit was transferred to Northwest Europe
where he served with the Canadian Army in Holland. Upon Graham's
return to Canada in 1946 he married Audrey and settled in Calgary

After working for some small companies engaged in oil and gas
exploration, Graham joined TransCanada Pipelines in 1954 as one

Graham was a key member of the team building the national pipeline.
Graham became Corporate Controller of TransCanada in 1971 and

his youth, U of A, the Army, TransCanada and Muskoka. He loved
to cruise Lake Muskoka and was famous for his 'moose call' and
infectious laugh. His children have great memories of going on
day-long explorations of the three big lakes in the early days
with their Dad in his ten horsepower outboard. Graham was slowed
down with a stroke in 1989 but continued to live life as fully
as he could. In 2001, he and Audrey moved west again and settled
in New Westminster. Graham lost his beloved Audrey in 2002 and
missed her terribly but was buoyed by the support and comfort
of his family and Friends. Graham leaves his four children: Penny
