Dead cyclist 'came a long way in life'
Clarence BRIGHAM, 44, of Windsor died of hypothermia.

A cyclist who died of hypothermia in a farm field near Wheatley was remembered yesterday as a kind man generous with his time. Clarence BRIGHAM of Windsor had been a maintenance worker at Brentwood Recovery House, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, for about five years, said friend and co-worker Ken DURETTE.
"He was a bit of a loner, but he came a long way in his life," he said yesterday.
BRIGHAM, who loved to ride his bicycle, was quick to help when needed, DURETTE said.
He often helped kids learn to overcome reading problems and when DURETTE needed someone to help put up drywall in his house, BRIGHAM was there for three days.
"He was a good little guy," he said. "Life just sort of gave him a bad deal."
DURETTE said BRIGHAM, who suffered from schizophrenia, didn't seem well recently and some co-workers took him to the hospital about a week before his death.
But BRIGHAM, a private person, got tired of waiting and left, he said.
The 44-year-old man lived alone in an apartment in Windsor but had family on Walpole Island.
Chatham-Kent police say they believe BRIGHAM was depressed and had stopped taking his medication. They are awaiting toxicology tests.
BRIGHAM's body was found Friday in a field on the Fourth Concession Line of the former Romney Township northeast of Wheatley.
Det. Ed GIBSON said he believes BRIGHAM was riding his bike and became confused.
"It was just really bad timing for him," GIBSON said. "It was just a tragic accident."
Foul play is not suspected, but police are still looking for BRIGHAM's bicycle and why he was in Wheatley.

Meanwhile, Chatham-Kent police said a body found face down in a creek near the 18 Wheeler Truck Stop in Tilbury Monday was that of a 77-year-old Tilbury woman.
The woman had been reported missing by family shortly after the body was found.
The woman had been seen within 24 hours of going missing, police said.
Her name was not released. An autopsy to determine cause of death begins today in London.

Died on October 4, 2005, in her 94th year. Survived by her son Ted (Lorna), granddaughters Carolyn and Meg, and a daughter Claudia (Terence CORCORAN.) Predeceased in 1974 by her husband Joseph KRAWCHUK. Born Gabrielle DURGENSKY in Bratslav, Ukraine on April 5, 1912, she immigrated to Canada in 1927 with her mother Marianna (ZAVATSKA) to be reunited with her father, Jacob DURGENSKY who had preceded them. The family settled in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and then Larder Lake where Gabrielle married, raised her children and spent much of her adult life. In 1984, Gabrielle moved to Toronto where she lived for 17 years as a member of the St. Demetrius community on LaRose Avenue and then, as her health began to fail, for 4 years being kindly cared for at the West Park Long Term Care Centre. The funeral service will be held at St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church, 1399 Bayview Avenue on Tuesday, October 11th from 12 noon to 1 p.m. with the service starting at 1 o'clock. Reception to follow. In his 100th year, peacefully at Vision Nursing Home, Sarnia, on December 11th, 2005, after a full and productive life. Loving father of Fred and Ron TEDBALL of Sarnia. Predeceased by parents Henry and Amelia TEDBALL and ten siblings. Wives, Agnes SMITH and Marian PARK. Sons, John Clayton TEDBALL and Robert Lorne TEDBALL. Survived by nieces Beryl CHAMBERS, Elda PATTERSON, Eleanor MATHERS, Betty GRANT, Marion DURHAM. Granddaughters, Debbie MEREDITH, Joanna TEDBALL and Leanne BOND. Grandsons, David and Rick TEDBALL, Anthony TEDBALL and many more great grand decedents. Born at Sylvan, Ontario in 1906, raised in Parkhill, Clayton worked in various trades including teamster in the grain harvest of southern Saskatchewan, meat cutter in Weston, Ontario and in Sarnia for Walker Brothers Stores until joining Imperial Oil Limited, Sarnia in 1928. During World War 2, Clayton was assigned to Polymer Corporation as an operators/supervisor to help build and start the first Butyl Rubber production plant. After the war he returned to Imperial Oil where he continued to work in supervision and farm in Sarnia township until his retirement after 38 years of service. He then went on to enjoy 40 years of retirement and will be sadly missed by his family and the loving and caring staff of Vision Nursing Home, who enjoyed listening to his music renditions on the harmonica. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held with his interment in Lakeview Cemetery. She leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who will miss her great love and interest in their lives. John was a former employee at Ford Motor Company, and later sat on the Board of Directors and ran an activity group for the Canadian Mental Health Association, was on the Provincial Committee for the Ministry of Health, was a fundraiser for Prostate Cancer Research and Education L.H.S.C., was past President of the Schizophrenia Society, and also performed public speaking on education and family support, all as a volunteer. John was a man who concentrated his efforts towards helping the needy in the London community. Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas in charge of arrangements. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Harry, born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. October 14, 1924, served in England and Europe during the second World War. Discharged in 1946, Harry later graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and completed post graduate studies at the University of Toronto. He worked as a manager for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce at a number of Postings in Ontario, California and Nova Scotia until his retirement. He was an avid golfer and member of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club for more than 40 years. He became a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Hamilton after returning to Toronto to complete his career with the bank. Funeral Service from Central Presbyterian Church, 165 Charlton Ave. West, Hamilton on Saturday, January 29 at 11 a.m. Interment at a later date in Victoria, British Columbia. The family would like to express its gratitude to all the staff at Shalom Village in Hamilton for the care Harry received during his final months. Jack was a dedicated employee of the Toronto Star and was also very proud to have been a member of the St. Clair Masonic Lodge for many years. Helen was born in Gravenhurst at "Rosehurst" the Mickle family home on Bay Street (later known as Garner Lodge) to Grace and George HARPER. Pre-deceased by her husband, Charles Gordon DURNAN in May 1984. Survived by her brother Mr. Jack M. HARPER and sister Reverend Betty PUGH of Waterloo, Ontario. Loving mother of Michael (Carolyn) of Bracebridge and Gord (Dale) of Gravenhurst. Wonderful grandmother to five grandchildren - Rob, Scott, Chris, Sarah and Shannon and great grandmother to Carter and Jackson.
Helen was a leader in volunteer service in Waterloo, Ontario with the Canadian Red Cross, Victorian Order of Nurses and the United Church of Canada. Helen and her husband Gordon and family cottaged on the island on Gull Lake for more than 75 years.

As well as being a devoted family man, Jim provided service to the City of London as a dedicated police officer and retired in the position as detective after 32 years.
