Dad, 23, electrocuted
Flagpole mishap costs Adam
DOW his life and leaves wife
Kelly▼
to raise their twin baby sons.
By Melinda
DALTON,
Free
Press
Reporter
With nine-week-old twin boys, a new house in Lucan for his young
family and a new job working with his father at Battlefield Rentals
in London, 23-year-old Adam
DOW seemed to have everything going
for him.
That was before the afternoon of August 5 when, while putting
up a flagpole in his yard,
DOW hit a power line.
From that brief moment, his life would be measured in days instead
of decades.
And his family would be left struggling to cope with the freak
accident that, Sunday, in a London hospital, nine days later,
took the promising young man's life.
DOW grew up in Lucan and met his future wife, Kelly
SENTON, in
Grade 2.
"They▼ started dating in Grade 10,"
DOW's father, Stuart
DOW recalled.
"They've been soulmates ever since."
Brandt and Brody, their identical twins, joined the budding family
this year, born a few weeks early on June 2.
A textbook handyman,
DOW spent the days before the births finishing
the nursery in the home the couple bought to have more room for
the boys to grow.
"He was a very proud young father," said Carlton
NIXEY, service
manager at Battlefield Rentals.
DOW started working as a parts clerk at the company a little
more than a year ago.
"He was still learning the business, but he really caught on
fast," NIXEY said.
DOW's father said his son always had been mechanically inclined
and a hard worker.
When Adam was nine, he wrote a job resume and rode his bike up
and down the road in Lucan, placing one in each mailbox.
"One of the farmers hired him on," his father said.
"He's always been ambitious. He paid cash for his own car when
he was 15, before he could drive."
DOW was characteristically busy again August 5, erecting a flagpole
on his front lawn.
He'd fashioned the pole himself from an old pipe, attaching a
pulley to hoist the flag.
"It was for a Canadian flag. He wanted to show his patriotism,"
Stuart DOW said.
Noticing the power lines not far from where he'd laid the concrete
support for the pole,
DOW warned his wife to mind the wires.
Seconds after the words left his mouth, wind pushed the pole
Adam was hoisting into the power line.
His wife tried to pull him from the metal pipe several times.
"Every time she grabbed his shirt, she got electricity running
through her," Stuart
DOW said.
"She did manage to pull him off. If she hadn't, it would have
been much worse."
Kelly DOW, on maternity leave from Scotiabank in Stratford, suffered
minor burns to her hands.
Adam's injuries were far more serious.
The current that ran through his body had such a profound effect
that both of his arms had to be amputated.
Despite his injuries,
DOW's parents and wife remained optimistic
he'd pull through.
During the week-long ordeal, many family members slept at the
hospital, leaving only to look after the babies.
The twins, tended by relatives while their mother kept vigil
at Adam's bedside, will never get to know their proud and ambitious
father.
After enduring more than six days of operations to restore damage
caused by the shock, Adam
DOW died in the critical care unit
at London's Victoria Hospital Sunday.
While arrangements are still being made to honour
DOW's life,
Kelly's aunt has set up a trust fund to help the young widow
and her now 11-week old boys.
Anyone who'd like to contribute to the trust can donate at any
TD Canada Trust branch to account number 2940 6216389.

RICHARDSON,
Sharon
In loving memory of my dear sister, Sharon
RICHARDSON, who passed
away April 12, 2004.
As I sat in your room watching you sleep
I thought of old memories and will treasure them deep.
Your laughter, your smile, your twinkling eyes
I think of them all with heartfelt sighs.
As I watched you take your last, slow breaths
I knew you were ready for a peaceful rest.
The smile on your face told me you were okay
I have that to hold onto day after day.
I know you are now in a beautiful place
I'm sure Mom and Uncle Gord have a smile on their face.
Give them a hug and send them my love
I know yous will be watching from up above.
I will remember every moment we spent together
They will stay in my heart forever and ever.
It was so hard to say goodbye
I know you told me not to cry.
My tears I will wipe, Ill change my frown to a smile
I know I will go on, but it will be hard for a while.
I love you, Sharon, please never forget
We will meet again, some day, but not just yet.
You are missed more than you know
The ones who truly cared were heartbroken to see you go.
Lovingly remembered and never forgotten, your sister Wendy

CUSHMAN,
Marguerite
In loving memory of Marguerite
CUSHMAN, who passed away April
Dont think of her as gone away
Her journey has just begun.
Life holds so many facets
This earth is only one.
Just think of her as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years.
And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched
For nothing loved is ever lost
And she was loved so much.
We miss you hon.

Sobbing pals recall their 'rose'
Kitchen volunteer fed hungry with food from own fridge
Pattern of abuse started early in victim's life, cousin says
By Jessica
LEEDER,
Staff
Reporter with files from Dale Anne
FREED
Rose McGROARTY was known for putting the needs of others -- to
eat a good meal, find shelter, have a shower -- before her own.
Even among close Friends, the 46-year-old rarely talked about
her aches, the causes of the bruises beneath her sweater, why
she spent so much time volunteering at the Parkdale Activity-Recreation
Centre, or made it her home away from home.
If only she had, mournful Friends said yesterday, her fate might
have been different.
"I can't help thinking that I wish I had known what you were
going through," a friend wrote to
McGROARTY in a letter read
at a packed memorial service at the community centre. The building
houses the kitchen where
McGROARTY spent six days a week the
last three years volunteering and making Friends -- until she
disappeared last month. Her dismembered body parts have been
found throughout the city.
But a family member said it would have been out of character
for the hard-luck woman to tell anyone if she was a punching
bag. She learned early, the cousin said yesterday, to distract
herself and not dwell on what was really going on.
"I understand that she didn't have a whole lot of money in Toronto,"
said Kimberly
CAMPBELL, a cousin who grew up with
McGROARTY in
London, Ontario "The catch here is that it didn't start (in Toronto),"
she told the Star in a phone interview. "But Rose Marie was the
type of person, no matter what anybody did to her, she would
never talk about it."
A pattern of abuse in
McGROARTY's life started early, when she
was about 6 or 7,
CAMPBELL said. She was living in London at
the time, and with her mother unable to care for her -- for reasons
that are unclear --
McGROARTY moved into a boarding house run
by Edith SANDERS.
In 2002, SANDERS was convicted for enslaving and torturing children,
including CAMPBELL, her adopted daughter, from the 1950s to the
1980s. SANDERS' victims testified at her trial that while under
her care, they were beaten with hockey sticks, tortured with
a cattle prod and forced to eat animal feces.
SANDERS was sentenced
in January 2003 to four years in prison on four counts of assault
and three counts of assault causing bodily harm. She died last
year while on parole.
The conviction stemmed from allegations brought by
CAMPBELL and
other siblings; none of the charges that resulted in conviction
related to
McGROARTY.
"Rose
Marie didn't have a fighting chance (in life,)"
CAMPBELL
said, recounting their tormented childhood. "Dysfunctional leads
to dysfunctional. She didn't get the education she needed, she
was abused mentally and physically, and yet she went along in
life and tried to accomplish and do the best that she could.
"It sounds to me that she was doing wonderfully for what she
experienced in her lifetime. She was such a forgiving person."
"This was Rose's home. This was a very important place for her,"
said Peggy-Gail
DEHAL-
RAMSON, a Parkdale community advocate.
Nearly 100 people gathered at the memorial service, one of two
held for McGROARTY yesterday. Leaning on canes -- and each other
and wiping wet cheeks, those whom
McGROARTY treated like family
lamented their great loss. At times, centre general manager Victor
WILLIS had to pause to console the crowd.
"There's such a disconnect between who she was and how she died,"
he said. "We will not let another woman be harmed in our community."
Three women who worked alongside
McGROARTY in the kitchen each
day, Michelle
WALDRON,
Jean
McGRATH and Sugar
WALKER -- who had
a red silk rose pinned to her top -- sobbed uncontrollably during
the reading of farewell letters they wrote to their friend.
"Knowing someone like you, Rosie, you really were a 'rose,'"
one letter said. "A good friend. A beautiful person. A 'rose'
could not be so sweet as you!"
Greg DOWE, 25, met
McGROARTY through his grandmother, Marjorie,
who frequently offered up her Dunn Ave. apartment for
McGROARTY
when she needed a reprieve.
"This is just like killing a part of my family,"
DOWE said. "She's
the kind of person who would give up their life in order for
somebody else to live. Everything about her was to make everybody
else happy."
Later in the afternoon, Father Vaughan
QUINN asked 20 parishioners
to remember
McGROARTY and her good works at a service at the
Missionaries of Charity Convent, near her apartment.
WALKER said
McGROARTY had been trying to mend fences with her
mother and two children, in their 20s, after years of estrangement.
After the hour-long service at the Parkdale community centre,
Friends stayed to trade favourite stories about
McGROARTY.
She
was a rare volunteer who allowed the very hungry to come back
for seconds -- if the food ran out, she wasn't above running
home and taking from her own fridge.
Robert WISZNIOWSKI,
McGROARTY's 50-year-old common-law husband,
has been charged with second-degree murder.
