James Harry
FAUGHT
By Wylam FAUGHT and Brad
FAUGHT and Julie
FAUGHT and Josie
DOROSZ,
Monday, August 29, 2005, Page A14
Father, teacher. Born March 7, 1925, near Eganville, Ontario
Died July 15 in Renfrew, Ontario, of heart failure, aged 80.
Born in a small, log farmhouse near the picturesque Ottawa Valley
town of Eganville, Harry was the fourth, of what were ultimately
to be 11 children. The
FAUGHTs, of Irish and Scottish descent,
were a hardworking, modest, and traditional family that thrived
in the farming vocation: four of Harry's brothers followed their
father, John, into a successful life on the farm. In the 1940s
and 1950s, John had one of the best herds of purebred Herefords
in Ontario. But Harry, owing partly to childhood health problems,
and partly to outstanding academic potential, was destined for
something other than the farm; he was the first of his siblings
to attend high school and university, for which he won a provincial
scholarship.
Harry's school and university years were shaped by an increasing
exposure to interdenominational evangelical Christianity. Consequently,
following a B.A. in political economy from McMaster, he decided
to pursue graduate studies in theology at Dallas Theological
Seminary in Texas. Graduation in 1953 with a doctorate in theology
was followed by an appointment as pastor of Danforth Gospel Temple
in Toronto. The subsequent 15 years in Toronto were marked by
regular public commentary on the religious and social issues
of the day, extended preaching trips to South America and Africa,
and marching alongside Martin Luther King and his followers from
Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in support of the great campaign
for civil rights waged by African-Americans in the mid-1960s.
Harry also became the founding president of the Evangelical Fellowship
of Canada, an organization committed to interdenominational harmony.
In 1968, Harry, his wife Barbara, and their four children moved
to Calgary where Harry deepened his affection for the West and
ranch country, something that had started during his student
years in Texas. While in Calgary, in addition to providing leadership
to the Capitol Hill/Beddington congregation, Harry extended his
teaching and leadership to Northwest Bible College in Edmonton
(now Vanguard College), and
to Central Pentecostal College in
Saskatoon. Close to his heart were Harry's frequent trips to
the Northwest Territories as a member of the Pentecostal Sub-Arctic
Mission board, which ran the hospital in Hay River that continues
to serve the mixed white and native population.
Harry was also a great sports fan. Never an athlete himself --
although he liked to water ski during his younger days -- he
loved to watch. Whether it was cheering on his children from
frozen football stands, standing beside wet soccer fields, shivering
at outdoor hockey rinks, or loading ski equipment into the back
of the station wagon for trips to nearby Banff and Lake Louise,
Harry was always there. As a hard-up graduate student in Dallas,
he had sold programs at the Cotton Bowl. Later in Toronto and
Calgary he attended games of the Maple Leafs and Argonauts, Stampeders
and Flames. One of his most prized recent possessions was an
autograph from Jarome Iginla wishing him well on the occasion
of his 80th birthday.
Harry's final career direction was as a professor and an academic
administrator, serving as president of Central College in Saskatoon
and acting principal of Pan Africa Christian College in Nairobi,
Kenya. Harry's last years saw a return to the Ottawa Valley,
proximity to his large extended family, supporting Barbara during
her fight with terminal cancer, and looking back fondly -- surrounded
by admiring children and grandchildren -- on a full and productive
life.
Wylam, Brad, Julie, and Josie are Harry's four children.

BEHAN,
Pamela
Jane "
Pommie"
Passed away peacefully at the Trillium Manor, Orillia on Saturday,
November 19th, 2005; in her 82nd year. Born in Hamilton, Ontario
on March 4, 1924, she lived her early years in Toronto before
marrying and settling in Orillia, Ontario. Beloved wife of the
late Dr. J.A. Tremayne (Tre)
BEHAN and much loved "Mom" of Bari
DORWARD
(Sandy,)
Rod
(Susan,) and Don (Juliet) all of Toronto,
Brenda TURNOUR
(Murray) of Cambridge, Cheryl
BEHAN (John) of
Orillia and the late Barbara
OATWAY.
She was adored by a host
of grandchildren, Kelly, Michael, Laura, Mary, Jessie, James,
Jodie, Jonathan, Conor, Cameron, Jamie and Andrew, and great
grandchildren, MacKenzie and Keegan. Pam met Tre during the war
and married shortly thereafter. They settled in Orillia and began
the task of raising a family of 6 children. In addition to her
role as a dedicated and loving Mother, she was also Dad's right
hand in his veterinary clinic. Mom never lost sight of her family
or Friends, who always played a significant role on her life,
whether on the golf course, playing bridge or sailing. Pam loved
painting/drawing - perhaps best remembered in her annual hand-drawn
Christmas cards. In Mom's later years, she was very giving of
her time, most notably to Hospice Orillia. She always felt that
the knowledge she had gained from her experiences would be helpful
to others during difficult times. Pommie's charm, generosity,
grace, sense of humour and love will be sorely missed by the
many who had the wonderful opportunity to be associated with
her. Rest in peace Mom. You will be missed! The family wishes
to thank the staff of Birchmere Retirement Residence, Trillium
Manor and Hospice Orillia for their kindness and compassionate
care. The late Mrs. Pamela
