Roma HENDERSON (née DODDS) passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Monday, June 6th, 2005 following a brief illness. Roma was born on January 22nd, 1921 in Surrey, England, the daughter of the late Jackson and Florence DODDS. The family immigrated to Canada where she attended Trafalgar School in Montreal and then went to King's Hall, Compton, now part of Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec. After graduation, a year at a Swiss 'Finishing School' followed. She enrolled at McGill University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. In the Second World War she joined the Women's Royal Naval Service, soon becoming an officer assigned to Ottawa. For a period after the War she worked for Bell Telephone of Canada. Roma with her late husband, John HENDERSON, spent time in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Somalia. She was a volunteer in Toronto for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and in Fredericton for the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. She was also a supporter of the Beaverbrook Gallery and the Fredericton Playhouse. It is with great sorrow that we announce that David has gone to be with the Lord after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. He died very peacefully at home with his family by his side on November 2nd, 2005. Deeply loved husband of Jacquelyn, father of Mark and Kathryn, at long last reunited with his beloved daughter Jennie and his father Harry. David will be very much missed by his family in Northern Ireland: mother Irene, sisters Ann (Brian) and Iris (Sam), nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; also, by his many Friends in Canada and Northern Ireland and his colleagues at The City of Brampton. According to David's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service in honour of David will be held at North Bramalea Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 6th at 3 p.m. Interment will take place in Northern Ireland at a later date. Lillian was a pioneer in bringing her scientific baking methods to young women. Throughout the 1950s, she conducted baking classes in her living room and later opened the first established cooking school in Toronto. Although a woman of many accomplishments -- a businesswoman, an early feminist and the oldest living survivor of breast cancer in Toronto -- her proudest achievement was her family. Lillian leaves a living legacy in her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her series of cookbooks, the last of which was published in her late eighties. Adored wife of the late Hyman KAPLUN (1977,) beloved mother of Jack and Sandy KAPLUN and Jill KAPLUN and Lorne HALL. " Bub▲" to Shannon KAPLUN and Jason MULCAHY, Emilie and Link IRELAN, Joshua GLUSKIN and Risa SHERECK, Risa GLUSKIN and Val DODGE, Lindsay, Brad and Jay HALL. Great-grandmother to Della, Ryan, Cooper and Miller. Loving sister of Esther and (the late) Joseph LIEBERMAN, Lazar▲ and (the late) Mary SLOTNICK. Predeceased by siblings Jack SLOTNICK, Sarah BROWN and Dora LEVEEN. Lillian was a pioneer in bringing her scientific baking methods to young women. Throughout the 1950s, she conducted baking classes in her living room and later opened the first established cooking school in Toronto. Although a woman of many accomplishments - a businesswoman, an early feminist and the oldest living survivor of breast cancer in Toronto - her proudest achievement was her family. Lillian leaves a living legacy in her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her series of cookbooks, the last of which was published in her late eighties. O'CONNOR, Father Desmond
Father Desmond O'Connor, age 70 passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Mother House in North Bay on Thursday, December 1st, 2005 surrounded by members of his loving family and Sisters of St. Joseph. Father O'CONNOR fought a very courageous battle with a rather aggressive cancer but he lived life to the fullest until the very end. Father O'CONNOR was born in Killaloe on February 14th, 1935. He attended St. Augustine's Seminary from 1954 until his ordination on May 11th, 1961. He was Parish Priest at Nativity Parish in Timmins from 1961 to 1971, at Holy Family Parish in Englehart from 1971 to 1973, at Our Mother of Perpetual Help in New Liskeard from 1972 to 1973, at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Kirkland Lake from 1973 to 1981 and returned to Nativity Parish in Timmins from 1981 to 1994. Father Des was on sabbatical for 1994-1995 and then returned to Kirkland Lake and Englehart from 1995 until his retirement in June 2005. Father O'CONNOR was also an Associate of the Grey Sisters of Pembroke. Father O'CONNOR was predeceased by his brother Terence on June 3rd, 1962 his father Patrick on March 3rd, 1964 and his mother Ethel (née SULLIVAN) on March 24th, 1995. He is survived by his sister Margaret and husband Jim GLEASON of North Bay, brother Kevin and wife Maureen of Killaloe, sister Phyllis of North Bay (a Sister of St. Joseph), sister Colleen and husband Robert DODGE of New Liskeard, brother Jack and wife Patricia of Lac Labiche, Alberta. He will be sadly missed by his family, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and many Friends. The family will receive relatives and Friends at HolyName of Jesus Parish (corner of Kirkland St. and Lebel St.) in Kirkland Lake on Sunday, December 4, 2005 from 2: 00 to 5: 00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name of Jesus Parish on Monday, December 5, 2005 at 11: 00 a.m. with Bishop Paul MARCHAND officiating.
