Lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Caterina (DEVIT.) Adored father of Giuli (Frank PEGOLO,) Nelli (Paul DOMINGUES) and Doria (Domingo LEO.) Cherished nonno of Eric, Amanda, Stefan, Olivia and Evan. He was born on October 28, 1930 in Ramuscello Friuli Italia and arrived in Canada 51 years ago. He led a full and rich life which included being a member of the Coro Santa Cecilia since 1964. He is fondly remembered by family and Friends in Canada and Italy. Mary has been active in community affairs, working as a volunteer with Participation House, Cancer Society and Markham-Stouffville Hospital. Mary was predeceased by her husband Wilf, her parents, and brothers Tom and Dick. She leaves her children, Brent, Brad and his wife Monica, and Brenda and her husband Dr. Hugh DEVITT, and grandchildren Mark, Janice, Karen, and Kim. Peacefully, in her 85th year on Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in the presence of her loving children. Margaret was the cherished wife of the late John Girvin DEVITT. Youngest daughter of the late Harold and Edith HOWELL, Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband John Girvin (Jack) DEVITT in 1989, her precious son, John Charles DEVITT in 1960, her sisters, Mildred CLEATOR, Lillian STOCK and Helen HOWELL. Margaret is survived by her loving children Girvin (Cheryl) DEVITT, Margaret DEVITT, and Catherine (Bob) WEBER. Cherished Grammie of Amanda, Anne and John DEVITT of Peterborough. Margaret will be fondly remembered by her niece, Barbara GLADDEN, and her nephews George and Robert STOCK, Doug and Allan SMITH and Ian CLEATOR. She will be dearly missed by Bruce and Eldred SMITH of Toronto and her countless Friends. Margaret led a very active life of community involvement. She was dedicated to her Alma Mater, McMaster University Class of '42, and served for many years as Secretary of the McMaster Alumni Association. For her most significant commitment to the University, Margaret was presented with McMaster's Distinguished Service Award. Margaret was an active member of Ryerson United Church, Hamilton and was a life member of the United Church Women Her volunteer activities centered around St. Peter's Hospital, the Y.W.C.A., the Canadian Cancer Society and the March of Dimes. Margaret was also active in the work of OptiMrs Club. Her interests in her family history led her to be a pivotal member of the executive of the Shaver Family Annual Reunion where she served as Secretary for many years. Margaret enjoyed the arts and she supported the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Dundas and the Southampton Museums, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. Her love of travel took her to Greece, Great Britain, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, Morocco, the Danube and all over North America. Of all, her favourite spot was her cottage in Southampton, on the shore of Lake Huron. Friends may call at the Marlatt Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 615 Main St. E. Peacefully at home on Monday, June 20, 2005, after a long and happy life at the age of 88. Dear husband and best friend of Helen (née DANIELS) after 60 years of marriage. Proud father of John (Brenda,) Grant (Linda,) Mary DEVITT (Richard,) Sandra FREEMAN (John) all of Ottawa, and Susan Peart CSASZAR (Elmer CSASZAR) of Toronto. Also survived by five grandchildren: Peter, Emily and Graham DEVITT of Ottawa, and John and Elizabeth CSASZAR of Toronto. He also leaves his brother Dr. Arthur PEART (Gwen) of Ottawa, and his sister Muriel PROVERBS (Jinx) of Summerland, British Columbia. In addition to his family, Doug will be missed by many Friends and professional associates.
Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ottawa Civic Hospital from 1954 to 1978, and first non-medical Administrator. Chief Executive Officer of the Port Arthur General Hospital from 1951 to 1954. Served five years during World War 2 with the Canadian Army and discharged with the rank of Captain having served four years overseas. Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Health, and Life Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Recipient of the Commemorative Medal recognizing the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, and recipient of the Commemorative Medal on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the accession of her Majesty The Queen of the Throne.
