Mitchell "
Mitch," B.A., LL.B.
Mitchell passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on
Friday, January 7, 2005, at Ottawa, in his 89th year. Mitchell
was born in Ottawa on November 10, 1916, the
son of Dr. Clarence
M. and Mrs. Hazel R.
DENT.
Mitchell was the beloved husband of
Theresa, cherished father of Mitchell (Nathalie), Roger (Susan),
Melanie and Cynthia (Nigel). He was affectionately known as Pa
to grandchildren Sam, Joey, David, Meredith, Evelyn, Liam, Georgia
and Benjamin. He is survived by his sister Martha
COUGHLIN and
sister-in-law Elena
DENT and was predeceased by his brother Lionel
and his sister Frances. He graduated from Glebe Collegiate in
1934 and the University of Toronto in 1939. After attending Osgoode
Hall, he was called to the bar in 1942. He then joined the Royal
Artillery Reserve Unit. Mitchell embarked on a legal career that
was to span over half a century. After articling in Toronto,
he moved to Ottawa where he acted on many cases for the Wartime
Prices and Trade Board. He opened his own office in 1947 and
in 1957 formed a partnership with Jim
FRANCIS.
Mitchell kept
up an active practice until 1995. He was also active in the Ottawa
real estate market. Music, especially opera, was one of Mitchell's
great loves. He played trumpet in the Glebe Collegiate Orchestra
and the University of Toronto band. In 1939, he traveled to Europe
as a member of the orchestra on the S.S. Statendam. Mitchell
belonged to many organizations over his career but was especially
proud of his long association with the Ottawa Gyro Club, of which
he served as President in 1949, 1961 and 1988. He was one of
the longest standing members of the Rivermead Golf Club, having
been affiliated with the club for over 60 years. He was recently
made an honorary member. Mitchell was a voracious reader. He
had an uncanny ability to retain what he read, which made him
a formidable opponent in family games of Trivial Pursuit. He
took a strong interest in politics and stock markets and was
always ready to debate the latest developments. In his spare
time, he loved to relax at the family cottages at Constance Bay
and Calabogie Peaks. For Mitchell, relaxation often involved
construction or landscaping. His earthmoving projects at Constance
Bay were legendary in family circles. The last years saw Mitchell
struggle with Parkinson's disease, which shrouded his greatest
talents-his eloquence, his wit and his sense of humour. He handled
his illness with strength, dignity, perseverance and determination.
We thought the world of him. In lieu of flowers, the family has
requested that donations be made to the Parkinson's Society of
Ottawa Carleton. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse,
Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa. on Sunday, January
9 from 2: 00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Dora
Elizabeth (née
FOLLETT)
February 25, 2005 on Quadra Island, British Columbia in her 90th
year. The eldest daughter of the late Joseph V.
FOLLETT and Mary
Elizabeth FOLLETT
(JOHNSTON,)
Dora was born in Calgary on May
19, 1915. One of four children, she was educated in Calgary,
attended Mount Royal College before moving to the University
of Toronto from which she graduated with a B.A. in 1939. In 1943,
she married Albert Edward
DENT
(Bert) and together they enjoyed
a wonderful 50 years until his death in 1993. They lived in Toronto,
Deep River, and finally Port Hope, Ontario. Predeceased by one
brother, Bert and her sister Emily, she is survived by her brother,
Dr. A.V. FOLLETT
(Marg) of Calgary, Alberta. Left to mourn her
passing are son Peter (Dorothy
HARVEY) of Galiano Island, British
Columbia, daughter Judy
ODELL
(Jim
MOATS) of Quadra Island, British
Columbia, grandchildren Elizabeth and Geordie
DENT,
Liam and
Alex ODELL, and great grandchildren Greyson and Sophia
HARPER.
Dora's passion was music. As a young girl she won many festivals
and sang in numerous recitals in Calgary. During her university
days, she earned money as a paid soloist in Toronto. After taking
time off to raise her family, she returned to university in 1960-62
and qualified as a music teacher. For many years she was a music
specialist servicing the elementary schools in Port Hope. She
sang in the senior choir of Port Hope United Church as well as
directing the Boys Choir. After her working life ended, she continued
to support musical and community endeavours, both as a founding
member of the Friends of Music and the Probus Club. When she
retired she and Bert enjoyed many fine years and trips together.
After his death, she continued to travel: to Africa, Australia
and New Zealand, China, the Caribbean and the Czech Republic.
Several of these trips were taken with her children. She continued
to make regular visits to England, maintaining close relationships
with Bert's family. In 2001, she fulfilled a life-long dream
by visiting Newfoundland, the birthplace of her father. Last
year, on her own initiative, she decided to leave Port Hope and
move to the British Columbia Coast to be closer to her children.
She chose to live in a retirement home in Victoria but failing
health mandated a move to her daughter's home. In her words,
"My get up and go got up and went." Her legacy is in the number
of former students who say with pride, "Mrs. Dent taught me music!"
