DAVIS,
Lester
Scott
Les DAVIS was born in Toronto April 15, 1909 and died peacefully
at Sunnybrook Hospital, August 11, 2005. He will be remembered
by everyone for his intelligence, his constancy and his generous
caring spirit. Raised in downtown Toronto, he graduated from
the U. of T. in the midst of The Depression. He began what proved
to be a lifelong career of mutual admiration and respect with
Manulife, starting as a summer mortgage clerk, and retiring as
financial vice-president 42 years later. Les married Millicent
(Minty) CORRIGAN, his high school sweetheart in 1935. They had
three children - Peter, Michael and Sally and lived in steady
quiet harmony until Minty's death in 1982. His subsequent marriage
to Marion GIBBARD in 1985 was another admirable union: gentle,
respectful, and mutually nurturing. Marion passed away in 2001.
Soon after, Les began his struggle with Alzheimer's. Up to that
time, however, Les held many roles and responsibilities in his
wider community. In over 60 years of membership at Fairlawn Heights
United Church he was steward, trustee and elder, choir member,
fundraiser and chair of many committees. He served on the boards
of several Toronto area charities both before and well after
retirement. He was the classic organizer who people counted on.
Les loved playing piano and was the leader of a Vancouver dance
band in the 30's. Throughout the years, his easy musicianship
brought the pleasures of those times to life for his family,
Friends and associates. Later, as Alzheimer's rapdily circumscribed
his other talents, he continued to play for any who asked - capable,
selfless and generous, almost to the end. He will be missed by
all who knew him. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will
be held at Fairlawn Heights United Church (Fairlawn Ave., just
west of Yonge St. 416-481-6848) on Monday, August 22, at 11 a.m.
Visitors are welcome to meet before the service from 10: 15 to
11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Ontario Heart and
Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by his family.
