Rolph
Byron
Rolph succumbed to cancer on Friday, June 10, 2005 at Sunnybrook
Hospital. A gifted and contradictory man, touched by innocence,
Rolph is remembered for his love of mechanical and technical
things. He also loved a competitive chess game and a good debate.
Raised with progressive ethics, Rolph advocated for a Canada
that would be good for working people. He also had a soft spot
for England, counselling any who would listen that England was
the place to go. When he was healthier, he had a knack for giving
thoughtful, well-chosen gifts. He wanted to be a science teacher,
but he moved people in other ways. Rolph will be missed. Family

'Big Lou' played hoods to the hilt
Comedian became familiar face on Canadian television
'Always a cigar in his mouth, like a gangster': Brother
By Patrick
EVANS,
Staff
Reporter
As a professional wrestler, he made his opponents scream in pain.
As a comedian with Wayne and Shuster, he made Canada scream with
laughter.
Louis "
Big
Lou"
PITOSCIA, the ultimate cigar-chomping bruiser,
died peacefully last Thursday at the age of 76. His career saw
him move from professional wrestling in the Maple Leaf Gardens
of the 1940s to playing tough-guy roles in movies and television.
But he's best remembered for decades of sketch comedy send-ups
of gangsters, hoods and prison inmates as a regular on Johnny
Wayne and Frank Shuster's Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television
show.
With his trademark fedora and cigar,
PITOSCIA lived his bully
image to the fullest. "Oh, big cigars he smoked. Always a cigar
in his mouth, like a gangster," said his brother James, 78.
But PITOSCIA had no problem playing against type if it got a
laugh. The men on Wayne and Shuster's show used to dress up in
drag as an all-female band. The camera would cut to
PITOSCIA
on the piano, wearing a black dress with a frilly collar and
brooch, a grey wig tied back in a bun -- and, of course, a cigar
in his mouth.
At the funeral home yesterday, he lay in the casket with a rosary
and a fresh cigar in his hands.
PITOSCIA was born to Italian immigrant parents in Toronto on
November 11, 1928, one of five children. When he hit his teens,
he was, as James put it, "a lot of trouble. He didn't take crap
from anybody."
PITOSCIA figured out at a young age how to land a punch.
"I know at school he used to beat the kids up," James said. "Then
the schoolteacher gave him a strapping. He stopped after that.
He turned out to be a good guy."
During his wrestling career,
PITOSCIA adopted a bad-guy persona
in the ring. It was a good rehearsal for the series of hoods
and gangsters he would play in his four decades as an actor.
When he retired from wrestling in the early 1950s, he weighed
280 pounds, had a 60-inch chest, a 48-inch waist, and a 19.5-inch
shirt collar.
In a 1960 interview with the Toronto Star,
PITOSCIA said his
inspiration for leaving wrestling for show business was Mike
Mazurki, a wrestler who jumped ship for Hollywood. In 1951, Mazurki
invited PITOSCIA to Los Angeles. On that visit,
PITOSCIA landed
a bit part in the movie My Favorite Spy, starring Bob Hope and
Hedy Lamarr.
For Big Lou, there was no turning back. "I was sort of a hood
in it. I got killed," he told the Star. "Anyhow, that experience
gave me confidence in my hidden talents, see."
But
Hollywood couldn't seduce
PITOSCIA.
His family says he was
determined to make it as an actor with Canada as his home base.
It was something he had in common with Wayne and Shuster, who
turned down offers in the United States, remaining defiantly
Canadian throughout their careers.
PITOSCIA's work with Wayne and Shuster, including some appearances
on The Ed Sullivan Show, led to more roles on television and
commercials.
"The time I was on The Ed Sullivan Show," he said in 1960, "I
had to get knocked through a lousy brick wall. Out of my pay,
they took 53 bucks tax. Fifty-three bucks they charge to let
you fall through a crummy wall."
PITOSCIA never worried about being typecast. "He was happiest
when playing the godfather roles," said his niece, Rosemary
CORRENTE.
It was a role he loved to play, even when the cameras stopped
rolling. CORRENTE remembers as a young woman bringing a date
over for dinner. She laughs at the memory of Uncle Lou sitting
down with the young man and pulling out a switchblade.
"He started cleaning his nails with the switchblade and said,
'So, what are your intentions with my niece'?"
CORRENTE said.
"He never came back for dinner, that guy."
Relatives remember
PITOSCIA for his hulking mass, booming voice
and devotion to family. "As tough as he was, he had a big, soft
heart," CORRENTE said.
Rosanna PICCININNI-
FERRONI, another niece, said as a little girl
she was always excited when Uncle Lou visited. "He would pick
me up with one hand," he said. She would perch there on his giant
open palm.
"He never had kids," she said, explaining why
PITOSCIA showered
a father's love on his nieces and nephews. "We always knew if
we were in a bind, we could go to Uncle Lou."
PITOSCIA married in the 1960s. His wife
Jill died about 30 years
later. After she was gone, he wouldn't let anybody use her rocking
chair. "Anybody who sat in it, he would say, 'Hey, that's my
wife's chair,'" James said.
Back in 1960, when he finished that interview with the Star,
PITOSCIA ordered the reporter back for one more word.
"You newspaper guys are always spelling my name wrong," he said.
"It's P-I-T-O-S-C-I-A. It ain't Pistachio like you're always
writing. That's a nut."
In addition to his brother James,
PITOSCIA leaves a sister, Lucy
PICCININNI. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today in
the chapel of The Simple Alternative Centre, 1535 South Gateway
Rd., in Mississauga.
