CORCORAN,
Thomas▼ -- Dispatch
By Oliver MOORE,

Thomas (Tommie)
CORCORAN was such a mainstay on the party circuit
back in the day that Friends would reschedule their events if
he couldn't make it.
It was an era when there were fewer good pubs, his niece says,
and house parties were more common. Mr.
CORCORAN, with his many
connections in the local Irish-Canadian community, became a necessary
fixture at these long-ago gatherings.
Years later, he found his home away from home at the Galway Arms,
an Irish pub in Etobicoke. It was there that supporters of the
Gaelic Athletic Association gathered to watch satellite broadcasts
of Irish soccer and opened their arms to visiting athletes.
Mr. CORCORAN's niece and goddaughter, Mary
HENNESSY, fondly remembers
her recently deceased uncle as a fun-loving guy who could talk
to anyone. But, she added, he often seemed unwilling to be serious.
"I used to say to him, 'Could you at least act like a 50-year-old
man if you can't act your own age'? says Mary
HENNESSY, herself
"I'd say, 'Could you at least act my age?' "
Mr. CORCORAN was born in Ireland and came to Canada at 25. He
settled in the west end and worked a series of jobs before heart
problems forced early retirement. Although also diagnosed with
leukemia, he carried on with a full schedule that included driving
other seniors to shopping or appointments. He never married,
but had many female Friends, his niece says.
His zest for life carried through until he died abruptly on May
30 at the age of 76.
"It was so shocking when he died," Ms.
HENNESSY says. "We always
thought he had nine lives."
