Annie
Evelyn
Wood
COLBERT
By Judith COLBERT,
Friday,
February 25, 2005 - Page A16
Nurse, sister, mother. Born January 29, 1910, in Saint Mary's,
Ontario Died December 12, 2004, in Guelph, Ontario, of natural
causes, aged 94.
When my mother's classmates at the Victoria Hospital School of
Nursing penned the following lines for her graduation yearbook
in 1932, they could not have known how prophetic they would be:
"Always happy, always gay, Chasing all the blues away. Where
Woodie is, no one is ever sad. We know she will be successful
wherever she goes, and may all her dreams come true."
Evelyn was a caregiver by nature and by profession. She was happiest
tending to the needs of others and her loyalty lasted a lifetime.
The eldest of six daughters of James and Arabella Lamond
WOOD,
Evelyn was fiercely protective of her sisters: Marguerite, Isabel,
Dorothy, Irene and Lillian. In a remembrance written for her
funeral, Dorothy called her "little mother to us all," capturing,
in a single phrase, her affection for her family.
But although family and community mattered, it was belonging
to the nursing profession that brought out the best in my mother's
nature and shaped her distinctive personality. In a memoir she
wrote in the early 1990s, Evelyn called entering training on
February 4, 1929, "the beginning of the most wonderful experience
of my life." The Class of 1932 became a second family, and residence
life forged ties that bound the girls together for the rest of
their lives.
Evelyn's career spanned amazing changes in health care. As a
student, she sterilized hypodermic needles on a spoon filled
with water boiled over a Bunsen burner. Common diseases of the
day included diphtheria, typhoid and polio.
On graduation, she joined the nurse's registry and took cases
as a "special" or "private-duty" nurse and often told us of her
adventures.
Once, a surgeon took her to a private hospital -- essentially
another doctor's house some miles away in the country. He did
an emergency appendectomy, and then left Evelyn alone with the
patient in a sweltering upstairs bedroom on 24-hour duty. The
patient recovered, but had no money to pay the nurse, and probably
not the surgeon. Years later, Evelyn met the grateful patient
on the street in London. On recognizing her, she pressed a $5
bill into her hand and disappeared. Evelyn never saw her again.
In the days before universal medical insurance, Evelyn was often
a community nurse for Friends and neighbours. Sometimes she was
paid, but more often, she donated her services. In the 1960s,
she joined the staff of Saint Mary's Hospital in London, where
she remained until her retirement in 1980, at 70 years of age.
When she married Whitney
COLBERT in 1941, Evelyn moved to the
rural village of Hyde Park, just outside London, Ontario Her
marriage was happy and she made a loving home for my sister,
Nancy, and me. With our father, she enjoyed entertaining family
and Friends; much of their life together focused on church and
community. Long after Whitney's death in 1982, when she had moved
on to London and Guelph, Evelyn often said how much she valued
the fellowship of Hyde Park.
After 1995, when she went to Guelph to live with Nancy and her
husband, her greatest delight was being "grandma" to Drew and
Allison and their many Friends who stopped by after school to
sample her famous tea biscuits and oatmeal cookies.
Throughout her life, Evelyn was fond of recalling that in 1932,
as each graduate left residence, she and her classmates followed
school tradition by singing the farewell hymn, Blessed Be the
Tie that Binds. Now it seems fitting to confirm that my mother's
Friends were right -- Evelyn did spend much of her life chasing
blues away and told us all, many times, that all of her dreams
had come true.
Judith COLBERT is Evelyn's daughter.

HILL,
Norma
Millie (née
BRADFORD)
Years ago, between the seas, there was born a child of needs.
Her mother left, her father quit, uncertain futures on mercy's
steps. Take this child, her fears quell, raise this child and
love her well. When she asks, let them tell, there were those
who loved her well. Norma
HILL passed quickly after a valiant
battle resisting death on February 17, 2005 at the Eden Care
Home in Chilliwack, at the age of 88 years. She was born in York
County, Ontario on January 24, 1917. Norma is survived by her
loving daughter Norma
WATT and her husband John in Yarrow, British
Columbia and loving sister Laura (Worsley)
COLBERT of Peterborough,
Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur, and the caring
family of George and Laura
WORSLEY of Toronto. Norma will always
be remembered in the communities of Toronto, Ottawa, Ladysmith,
Burnaby, White Rock and the Eden Care Home as a spunky little
lady of quick wit and high energy. She met life's challenges
head on. A Celebration of her life will be held at Yarrow Community
Hall on Saturday, February 26th, 2005 between 2: 00 p.m. to 4:00
p.m. Henderson's 604-792-1344
