BELL, Robert Archibald "Archie" Lt. Col, Lake Superior Regiment, Retired.
Died suddenly but peacefully on April 28, 2005 at Wyndham Manor, Oakville, in his 88th year. Much loved father of Lesley (Rod MORRISON) and Alison (Doug CHARLTON.) Born in Port Arthur, Archie was proud of his Scottish heritage and that his people came from the Hebridian island of Colonsay. Archie's war years defined him. He landed at Juno Beach with his regiment in August 1944, was wounded in action, and spent the remainder of the war in military hospitals in England and Canada, returning to Thunder Bay in 1946. Archie joined the family moving business, Angus Bell Cartage, in 1947, retiring in 1968. He then pursued successful real estate and sales careers. He was a devoted volunteer with countless organizations, including the Liberal Party of Canada, the Port Arthur General Hospital and the Lake Superior Regiment Old Boys Association. Archie married Barbara GILLESPIE in 1949. Their marriage was sustained by love and humour, which helped them through the loss of their daughter Nancy at 20 in 1974. Barbara died unexpectedly in 1986. In addition to his daughters, Archie is survived by brother Bruce (Anita), sister Marion (Wally), sister in law, Mona and many nieces and nephews. His sisters Jessie SPOONER (Art) and Dodie STRACHAN (Jack) and brother Ken predeceased him. Archie was fully engaged in life until the day he died. He will be remembered for his wry wit and engaging conversation. There will never be another like him. Lesley and Alison would like to thank the staff of Wyndham Manor for their exceptional and compassionate care of their father. Predeceased by his brother William B. STEN. Francis had a doctorate in philosophy. He enjoyed good music, the performing arts and fine art. He was an accomplished painter in his own right as well as a gourmet cook. Passed away peacefully at Versa Care in Lambeth of an age related illness. Born and raised in London, Ontario, Alan had the passion of his generation for the novetly of aviation. As a teenager he earned a dollar per day working along the railway lines and used it to pay for five dollar per hour flying lessons at the London Airfield. He had already logged solo flights when he volunteered with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and trained as a navigator. After the war, he joined Bell Canada and held many managerial positions during his 38 years of service.
Dearly missed by his beloved wife Helen Marjorie (McKIGGAN,) daughter Heather (John) TRUSSLER of Kitchener, son Alan John (Lucille) WHITEHEAD of Windsor and daughter Stephanie (Robert) INGALLS of Windsor. Grandfather of Bryan TRUSSLER of Kitchener, Scott (Corrie) INGALLS of Toronto, Sean INGALLS of British Columbia, Erin WHITEHEAD and Craig CHARNOCK of Toronto, and Meighen WHITEHEAD of Windsor. With him, loving him, as he gave up his courageous battle with declining health was his wife Helen (SIMS) OLDHAM, their children Lee OLDHAM, April and Joe MOREAU and Joy and Rob CHARON. Grandchildren Terri, Michael, Melissa and Brian, Jay, Matthew, Andy, Natasha, Nicole, Joshua, Dylan and Reilly and great-grandchildren Stephannie and Brianna.
Arthur was born in Southwold on November 27, 1923, the son of the late Henry and Bessie (CURRIE) OLDHAM. Brother of Ilene SEARAY (John) of Shedden and Forbes OLDHAM of Saint Thomas. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and cousins and special uncle to Judy SEARAY of Hamilton. Predeceased by brothers Currie, James and Gordon OLDHAM and sister Effie SMITH. Arthur farmed all his life until 12½ years ago at R.R.#1, Southwold. He drove school bus for the late Clarence Morrow and was security guard at the Elgin Mall for several years. Art played baseball (first base) for Shedden and enjoyed bowling, family activities and many happy hours were spent playing his Gibson in the presence of old Friends bringing to a close the varying chapters of his life. He was a past member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Shedden. Arthur shall be greatly missed by all who knew him. Bertha was a Supervising Operating Registered Nurse with Public General Hospital. Beloved wife of the late Edwin "Owen" McCREARY (1982.) Dear mother and mother-in-law of Helen and Glen LAWTON of Chatham and Howard and the late Beverley McCREARY (2004) of Wallaceburg. After graduating from the University of Montreal in 1943, he attend Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, receiving a master's degree in 1951. He then worked as a reporter for Ottawa's Le Droit and as a press officer for the Australian High Commissioner before joining the External Affairs Department in 1952. He served as ambassador to Peru and Bolivia from 1970 to 1973 and ambassador to Algeria from 1976 to 1978. Five years later, after a time as director of academic relations for the department, he was appointed ambassador to the Organization of American States.

Loving mother of Rachelle, Eileen, Pauline and her husband Greg JOHNS, and Jeannette and her husband Bryan BORBELY. Much▲ loved grandmother of Philip, Crystal, Shawn and Michael. Dear sister of Clement GUILBEAULT (Shirley,▲) Doreen▲ CLOUTIER/CLOUTHIER (her late husband Laurent,) Doris CHARPENTIER and Elaine ROCHON (both deceased.) Adeline will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, family and close Friends. Died peacefully at home in Ottawa, on Sunday, May 15, 2005, in her 72nd year. Born Marion TANTOT in Neuilly, France in 1933 she was sister to Georges TANTOT and Martine and Marianne VAUGIEN. First▲ married to the late Pierre CHARPENTIER, Canadian▲ ambassador, and mother of his children Frédéric, Manon and Virginie, and grandmother to Nicholas, Stéphane, Mélanie, Alexandre, Gaspard and Mathilde. In 1981 she became the beloved wife of Hamilton SOUTHAM. Interment▲ (Family▲ only) in the Southam plot in Beechwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church, 125 MacKay Street, New Edinburgh, Ottawa, on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 11 a.m. For those wishing, donations may be made to the Élisabeth Bruyère Palliative Care Centre, 43 Bruyère Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1N 5C8. Loving sister of Theresa, Stephen, Thomas, Robert and Edward. Lovingly remembered by her family and Friends.
