CARRELL,
Nancy
Jean (formerly
McGOWN)
Nancy died peacefully on 10 May, 2005 in Princess Margaret Hospital
surrounded by her family.
Nancy was born in Longview, Texas, on 25 July, 1944. She obtained
a B.A. from Texas Tech University and
an M.L.S. from North Texas
State University. She moved to Montreal in 1974 with her then
husband, Lee
McGOWN, immediately entered the law faculty of McGill
University and earned an
LLB,
LLM and a
BCL.
After a short time
in private practice, she moved into corporate counsel work and
eventually became General Counsel, Legal and Government Affairs
at Avon Canada. From there she moved to Canadian National Railways
as Deputy Secretary, to Celanese Canada Inc. as Vice-President
and General Counsel and, finally, to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
as Assistant General Counsel. She was a superb manager and all
those with whom she worked were devoted to her.
She leaves her husband, John
SWAN, who adored her, her daughter,
Hilary McGOWN, to whom she was utterly devoted, her step-daughters,
Ellen and Amanda
SWAN, her mother, Mary Hasty
CARRELL, her brother,
Bill and his wife
Janeen, her sister, Marilyn
MARTIN, along with
Molly, Min, Sara and Kate, all of whom will miss her greatly.
Nancy's enthusiasm for life was infectious and touched all those
who came into contact with her. Her life was characterized by
tremendous spirit and courage, by many loyal Friendships and,
above all, by generosity, kindness and humour. Those who knew
Nancy will never forget her laugh and her delight in jokes.
The family wishes to thank David
LOACH and the nurses and other
staff of Unit 14B at Princess Margaret Hospital for their kindness,
gentleness and compassion.
Celebrations of Nancy's life will be held in Montreal at the
University Club on Wednesday, 18 May, 2005 at 5: 00 p.m. and in
Toronto at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Building, Front
Street, on Wednesday, 25 May, 2005 at 5: 00 p.m.
The family would be very grateful if, instead of flowers, a donation
were made in Nancy's name to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.

KELLY,
Stewart
Lyle
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing
of Stewart Lyle
KELLY, lately of Markham, Ontario. "Stew"
KELLY
had an extraordinary dedication to the simple, traditional pleasures
of life: family, Friends and neighbours; church and community
service; his career; gardening, music and reading. He was born
on July 8, 1915 in St. Catharines, Ontario, but was raised and
spent most of his life in Windsor. He was one of the first graduates
of Kennedy Collegiate; then, with the outbreak of World War 2,
he enlisted and served as a Lieutenant in the Navy. Stewart later
served as Executive Officer at H.M.C.S. Hunter, was a former
Charter Member and past President of the Naval Officers Association
(Windsor), and became Commanding Officer of Royal Canadian Sea
Cadet Corps Agamemnon. Stew was also proud of his church affiliation,
and his Masonic honours. He served as Board Chair at the Westminster
and Emmanuel United Churches in Windsor, and later joined Stouffville
United Church. He was a Life Member of the Lodge of Perfection
(Windsor), Life Member of Chapter of Rose Croix (Windsor), Life
Member of Ontario Lodge 521, Moore Sovereign Consistory (Hamilton),
and Mocha Shrine Temple (London). He loved playing the musette,
on parade, with the Shriners' Oriental Band. After a successful
40-year career in the Personnel Department of Chrysler Canada,
Stewart retired to the Stouffville/Markham area where he pursued
gardening, music and reading with his usual passion. As always,
he kept some time aside for card playing, early morning coffee
and visiting with his many Friends and neighbours. Stewart will
be missed by his loving wife Jeanne, by his brother Jack (Bernice),
and by his children Paul (Gloria,) Kathleen
CARRICK,
Mark

and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by Annabel, his
beloved wife of 55 years, by his son-in-law John

Tears mark spot where 'good man' died
By Scott ROBERTS, Staff Reporter. With files from Huang
NAILI
With her head buried in her hands, Ann-Marie cried yesterday
beside a small memorial erected for her 27-year-old boyfriend
shot dead Friday night at a Scarborough housing complex.
On the patch of grass where Melbourne Glendon
WHITTICK was killed
lies a bundle of red and white roses, pink carnations and a glass
of red wine flanked by a porcelain statue of the Virgin Mary.
Aside from the tears, this memorial is the only sign that a man
was murdered here a day earlier. The police tape has been taken
down; children are back playing on the street.
"I woke up this morning and I said 'no, he's here,'" said Ann-Marie,
who asked her last name not be used. "He was such a good man.
He didn't bother anybody. He didn't harass anybody... I don't
understand why."
WHITTICK became involved in an altercation with two men before
he was shot once in the abdomen while on his way to the bus station
on Victoria Park Rd. near Finch Ave., near the Morecambe Gate
complex where his girlfriend and his aunt live.
It is unknown why
WHITTICK was shot, but police said the two
suspects might have been after the chain around his neck.
The woman who first called 911 said she tried to keep
WHITTICK
alert while he lay on the ground, a single stream of blood dripping
down his shirt.
"He looked at me and I was just telling him to stay alert," said
Sandy, who declined to give her last name. "I was clapping my
hands together and trying to keep him conscious."
Police arrived at the scene within minutes and taped off the
area to keep out a crowd of concerned residents. Some witnesses:
said it took Emergency Medical Services workers more than 25
minutes to arrive.
"The police came and the fire trucks came but there was no ambulance,"
said Sandy. "I kept saying to them 'where is the ambulance, where
is the ambulance? He is going to die!'"
Police did not comment on the response time but said it was unlikely
it took 25 minutes for Emergency Medical Services workers to
arrive.
Toronto Emergency Medical Services officials could not be reached
for comment.
Doctors told the family that
WHITTICK died of internal bleeding,
Ann-Marie said. An autopsy is scheduled for 10 a.m. today.
WHITTICK, who celebrated a birthday in late May, moved to Canada
three years ago from his native Jamaica in search of better opportunities
and to be with family members in Toronto. He used to live at
the housing complex where he was killed but had since moved to
the Don Mills Rd. and Sheppard Ave. area.
Friends describe
WHITTICK as a quiet and friendly man who loved
to spend time with his 3-month-old son.
Yesterday morning, Pastor Orim
MEIKLE from Rhema Christian Ministries
in Scarborough and about 600 parishioners took "the power of
prayer" to the streets in four neighbourhoods: Regent Park; Jane
St.-Finch Ave. W.; Rexdale (Rexdale Blvd.-Albion Rd.); and Malvern
(Sheppard Ave.-Markham Rd.).
The group wanted "to show support for the police and those who
are trying their best to make our neighbourhoods safe and awesome
for people to live," said Minister Jamie
CARRINGTON as she walked
with about 85 parishioners in Regent Park.
"We noticed in the past few weeks, or in the past few years,
we have a lot of shootings... particularly in these areas,"
CARRINGTON
said. "We want to reach out to these communities to let them
know there is a church available. We want to take a strong stand
against violence."
