Three suspects are being sought by Niagara Regional Police after
a man was shot dead in St. Catharines. Shelston Antonio

29, had moved to the city only three months ago.
The suspects are a trio of black men with pronounced Jamaican
accents who may have been driving a small and relatively new
silver car. They are considered armed and dangerous and should
not be approached by the public.
Police in Niagara Region said the victim appeared to have been
specifically targeted in the Christmas Eve attack.
Other occupants of the house were reportedly beaten and the victim

and brothers-in-law. Mom was born in England on August 5, 1927
and at the age of three moved to Canada with her family, where
she later met her husband David. Raising fourteen children in
tough times was a full time job, however, this exceptional mother
always worked late at night at a "real" job for extra income
to help support her family. Many will remember her little car
up and down the concessions as a rural route mail lady. For many
years Mom was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion
where she volunteered her time and efforts. Mom loved her bingo,
her bowling and her golf. In retirement she enjoyed wintering
in Panama City and Phoenix where she was a true sun worshipper.
If wealth were measured by family and Friends, Mom had riches

Man shot by police dies in mental hospital
David BELDMAN was shot in the leg during a confrontation with
police in Port Elgin on July 24
By Don CROSBY,
Wednesday,
August 17, 2005
A man shot in confrontation with police in Port Elgin last month
has died in custody at the Regional Mental Health Centre in St.
Thomas.
Earlier this month, assistant Crown attorney Brian
LINLEY sought
a 30-day court-ordered psychiatric assessment of the man, David
BELDMAN.
LINLEY said he had reasonable grounds to believe
BELDMAN
may not be criminally responsible because of mental instability.
BELDMAN was remanded until Friday to await a hearing before a
Walkerton judge to determine whether he should be sent for assessment.
BELDMAN, who would have turned 24 on August 26, was found unresponsive
in his room Tuesday morning at the regional mental health centre
and rushed to the local hospital. He was pronounced dead at 11: 35
a.m.
No details were available about the cause of death. A mandatory
inquest will be held into the circumstances surrounding his death.
An inquest is required by law whenever someone dies in custody.
BELDMAN was shot in the leg after a police officer in Port Elgin
fired her weapon in a confrontation with him in the backyard
of a Port Elgin residence about 10: 40 p.m. July 24.
Police arrested him about 6 a.m. the next day, then took him
to Southampton hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
BELDMAN's lawyer, Grant
MacKINNON, objected at a hearing in Ontario
Court of Justice in Walkerton on August 4 to a Crown request
to file a report from the Canadian Mental Health Association
about BELDMAN to justify a psychiatric assessment.
MacKINNON said he found one line in the report “objectionable.&rdquo
He did not consent to the report being filed with Justice George
BROPHY.
MacKINNON told
BROPHY that he didn't believe his client was incapable
of instructing counsel. He argued the trial should take place
first, followed by an assessment of whether his client is criminally
responsible.
BELDMAN had instructed
MacKINNON to set a date for trial on the
eight criminal charges that he faced.
BROPHY set August 19 for a half-day hearing to determine whether
he should order an assessment of
BELDMAN's fitness to stand trial.
He set no trial date.
BELDMAN was charged with unlawful entry, threatening death/bodily
harm, assault while resisting arrest, assault police, assault
with a weapon, trespass at night and two counts of breaching
probation.

MASSON,
Janet
Catherine (née

On May 13, 2005 at home, after a valiant struggle with cancer,
at the age of 72. Wife of Gordon

and son Paul will all miss her greatly. Her sister Margaret
(ANDREWS)
and her husband Bill
ANDREWS have been very close to her also.
Loving
Nana of Jessica and Matthew

Sadly

ANDREWS, Anne
MASSON,
Janet
PEARCE, Nancy
LOGAN and their spouses and children.
Cathie MASSON has been a tireless volunteer with the Ste. Anne
and District Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses. She has
served as past president of the Board of Directors, and board
member, but longest, and dearest to her heart, as co-ordinator
of palliative volunteers.
In 1984, as a direct result of a study she carried out, the Victorian
Order of Nurses began a palliative home care service for residents
of the West Island. Cathie's vision and determination also laid
the groundwork for the opening of a free standing hospice in
our community. She generously supported other with her expertise
to realize her dream. She served on the board of this hospice
from its opening.
While the Victorian Order of Nurses was the recipient of most
of her volunteer hours, over the past 40 years she has volunteered
with a variety of other community and church organizations. It
was those in need at the end of their life who benefited the
most from her vision, commitment, professionalism and compassion.
She was the recipient of the Commemorative Medal for the 125th
Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada from the Governor
General of Canada in 1992, The Volunteer Award of Excellence
from the Victorian Order of Nurses of Canada in 1996, and, most
recently (April 18, 2005), The Governor General's Caring Canadian
Award from Adrienne Clarkson, the Governor General, at a presentation
at Rideau Hall, Ottawa.
Thank you to all the staff at Saint Mary's Hospital Center, especially
to nurse Jeanie Sinclair. The care and support given to Cathie
and the family by the Victorian Order of Nurses and Health Access
nurses after she came home was greatly appreciated.
Visitation at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home,
222 Autoroute 20 (Cartier exit 49), Pointe-Claire, Quebec, on
Tuesday, May 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Celebration
of her life will be held at Beaurepaire United Church, 25 Fieldfare,
Beaconsfield, Quebec, on Wednesday, May 18 a 1 p.m. Interment
to follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Victorian Order
of Nurses, Ste. Anne and District Branch, 422 Beaconsfield Boulevard,
