PHELAN,
Claude, B.A.Sc., Prof. Eng.
It is with sadness that the family announces the death, after
a long and fulfilling life, of Claude
PHELAN, on August 14. Claude
leaves his dear wife of 56 years, Phyllis (née
BRITTEN,) and
three daughters: Nancy-Ann (James
SHAY/SHEA) of Boston, Deborah (Charles
STOODY) of North Vancouver, and Kerry (Louis
O'DEA) of Boston,
10 wonderful grandchildren, and his sister Patricia
RUDD of Collingwood,
Ontario.
Claude was born in Toronto on October 19, 1924, and grew up on
Centre Island. He served overseas in the Royal Canadian Air Force
as a navigator after attending St. Michael's College and graduating
from the University of Toronto. His career as a petroleum exploration
geologist took him around the world. After starting out with
Shell Oil in Calgary and Regina, he transferred to Chevron of
California and the family lived in Trinidad, Bolivia, Florida,
Colombia, California, and Libya. Claude then worked with the
World Bank in Ethiopia and Switzerland, finally retiring in West
Vancouver.
His thirst for knowledge and his love of life and family will
not be forgotten. A private family ceremony was held and his
ashes scattered at sea.
The family wishes to thank the Palliative Care team at Lions
Gate Hospital for their dedication in his last days.
