Father killed in 401 crash
By Sarah FRALEY, Free Press Reporter and Canadian Press
Napanee -- A London family's summer vacation ended tragically
yesterday when the sailboat they were towing landed on their
car after a crash on Highway 401.
Police say the driver, Gregory
BRINE, 41, died in the midday
crash that closed a busy stretch of the 401 east of Napanee for
hours.
The man's wife and three children -- boys aged four and eight,
and a girl, 10 -- were treated for minor injuries and released
from hospital in Napanee, west of Ottawa.
"We're speculating the boat was too large for the car pulling
it and that might have been a factor," Napanee Ontario Provincial
Police
Const.
Sheri
WANAMAKER said last night.
She said
BRINE's wife told her "we've just finished a vacation."
witnesses: say
BRINE lost control of his westbound station wagon
after the trailer carrying the seven-metre sailboat started to
fishtail.
The car hit the gravel shoulder, rolled across the highway and
struck a concrete median, with the boat landing on top of the
upside-down vehicle.
A trucker who saw the crash stopped and pulled out the three
children through the car's back window, said
WANAMAKER.
The mother, 42, freed herself from the car, police said.
Firefighters▼ extracted
BRINE from the vehicle, but he was pronounced
dead at the scene.
The 401's west lanes near the crash were closed for several hours
while police waited for a crane from Kingston to remove the boat.
The BRINE family lives at 566 Ambleside Dr. in the city's northwest.
Neighbours last night seemed to know little about the crash.

Neighbours mourn family man
Gregory BRINE was killed Friday when his car and boat trailer
crashed on Highway 401.
By Norman DE
BONO,
Free
Press
Reporter
In the backyard of the
BRINE family home stands a playhouse Gregory
BRINE built three weeks ago for his son Mitchell's fourth birthday.
Just two weeks ago, in the shadow of the playhouse, he camped
outside with his daughter, Alex, for her 10th birthday.
Yesterday, Friends and neighbours of the
BRINE family on Ambleside
Drive in the city's northwest remembered the father who devoted
his time to his family.
BRINE, 41, was killed Friday afternoon when the family's station
wagon that was pulling a sailboat crashed near Napanee.
"When he first moved in here we built the fences together in
the backyard and I got to know him quite well," neighbour Brett
FAIRWEATHER said yesterday.
"He was a great guy, a great father. I just heard about it and
I was shocked. This makes me very upset."
BRINE's wife, Yvonne, has a home-based counselling business,
FAIRWEATHER said, and their children are Alex, 10; Cooper, 8
and Mitchell, 4.
BRINE worked as a labourer at Cami Automotive in Ingersoll when
he went to the University of Western Ontario to upgrade his education.
He was recently hired into management at the automotive assembly
plant.
"He was on the line, but after finishing courses at Western,
he got into management. He had everything going for him,"
FAIRWEATHER
said.
Tessie SPITERI lives next door to the
BRINE family and recalls
every day after work and on weekends, Gregory
BRINE could be
found playing with his children in the backyard.
"When he got home, he was out there with them. It didn't matter
if it was hot or cold,"
SPITERI said.
"They were always together. It's a shame, a shame. He was a good
neighbour, a very nice guy. His yard is filled with toys for
the children."
witnesses: said
BRINE was driving the family's station wagon on
Highway 401 east of Napanee when the trailer carrying the seven-metre
sailboat began to swerve, Napanee Ontario Provincial Police said.
The car hit the gravel shoulder, rolled across the highway and
struck a concrete median, with the boat landing on top of the
upside-down vehicle.
A trucker who saw the crash stopped and pulled out the three
children through the car's back window, police said. Yvonne,
42, freed herself from the car.
Firefighters▲ extracted Gregory
BRINE from the vehicle, but he
was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash at about 12: 45 p.m. closed Highway 401 for hours. Yvonne
BRINE and her children were treated for minor injuries and released
from hospital in Napanee.
Police have speculated the boat was too large for the car pulling
it. The family had been on vacation.
