Jean LAVENDER died February 23 at the Victoria Manor Care Facility
in Lindsay, Ontario. Jean grew up in Winnipeg, attending Kelvin
High School, then Wesley College. After completing her Library
Science degree at the University of Toronto, she became a Music
Librarian at the Royal Conservatory of Music, and eventually
head Librarian at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto.
She served there until the early nineteen eighties and will be
remembered with affection and esteem by for mer students and
faculty members. Jean's many enthusiasm included the world of
arts and letters and an intense love of the natural world. Her
travels at home and abroad brought her keen enjoyment and she
had the gift of imparting her enthusiasm to others. She was a
born raconteur, using a distinctive turn of phrase make a simple
anecdote memorable. Jean was predeceased by her parents, older
sister Kitty and brother Dick. She is survived by her nephew

Jean LAVENDER died February 23, 2005 at the Victoria Manor Care
Facility in Lindsay, Ontario. Jean grew up in Winnipeg, attending
Kelvin High School, then Wesley College. After completing her
Library Science degree at the University of Toronto, she became
a Music Librarian at the Royal Conservatory of Music, and eventually
head Librarian at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto.
She served there until the early nineteen eighties and will be
remembered with affection and esteem by former students and faculty
members. Jean's many enthusiams included the world of arts and
letters and an intense love of the natural world. Her travels
at home and abroad brought her keen enjoyment and she had the
gift of imparting her enthusiasm to others. She was a born raconteur,
using a distinctive turn of phrase to make a simple anecdote
memorable. Jean was predeceased by her parents, older sister
Kitty and brother Dick. She is survived by her nephew Bill

13, 2005 at the Queen Elizabeth II Halifax Infirmary Hospital
in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born in Hamilton, Ontario on June 20,
1925, Bill was raised and educated in Toronto, graduating from
University College of the University of Toronto in 1950. After
working several years with the Robert Simpson Company, Bill joined
the Federal Government in 1965. Most of his career was spent
with Parks Canada from which he retired in 1994 as Director General
of the Atlantic Region. Bill had also been Regional Director
in Calgary, Winnipeg, Cornwall and Quebec, the other four regions
of Parks Canada, the only person to hold all five senior operational
positions in the history of Parks Canada. He leaves many Friends
throughout Canada and will be sorrowly missed for his wisdom
and his sage advice - He was one in a million! Special thanks

BUTLER passed away peacefully on Thursday, May
19, 2005 at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta.
Roger was born on October 14, 1927 in Ilford, England. Roger
lived in Canada during World War 2 and returned to England where
he studied Chemical Engineering. He earned his PhD in Chemical
Engineering at London's Imperial College of Science and Technology
in 1951. Roger returned to Canada and taught Chemical Engineering
at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and joined Imperial
Oil in 1955. He worked in the petroleum industry with Imperial
Oil in Sarnia, Ontario, New York and Calgary until the end of
1982. Roger then became Director of Technical Programs for
AOSTRA
until he accepted the Endowed Chair of Petroleum Engineering
at the University of Calgary from its inception in 1983 until
the end of 1995. Following his retirement from the University
of Calgary, he was Founder and President of GravDrain Inc., a
research and consulting company for the heavy oil industry. Roger's
experience covers a wide range of petroleum industry research,
engineering and development activities including heavy oil and
tar sands production, refining, computer control and transportation.
During 1987 1988, he was a distinguished Lecturer for the Society
of Petroleum Engineers and spoke worldwide on the subject of
horizontal wells. He made a second lecture tour for the Society
of Petroleum Engineers in 1992-1993 and spoke on Steam Assisted
Gravity Drainage, the process he invented in 1978. Since this
introduction, 330 billion barrels of oil have been rendered accessible.
In 1987, he was awarded the R.S. Jane Memorial Lecture award,
the premium award of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers.
Dr. BUTLER is the author or coauthor of over 100 scientific papers
and patents and of two books, Thermal Recovery of Oil and Bitumen,
Prentice-Hall, 1991, and Horizontal Wells for the Recovery of
Oil, Gas and Bitumen, Petroleum Society 1994. Roger's passions
were many and included his family, science, mathematics, computers,
electronics, short wave radio, sailing, travel, painting and
woodworking. Roger was survived by his loving wife Joyce of fifty-one
years; sons, Allen (Jane) of Seattle and Peter (Karen) of Vancouver,

on Sunday, August 21, 2005, in Chippawa, Ontario. Gabrielle ("Geb")
COMPER was born January 26, 1913 in Marengo, Saskatchewan of
pioneering parents. She was a graduate of St. Paul's Nursing
School and after moving to Toronto in 1937, worked as a Registered
Nurse▼ at St. Michael's Hospital. Gabrielle married Frank
COMPER
in 1941. A long-term resident of Leaside, Gabrielle was an outspoken
community activist and was deeply committed to local causes.
She had a passion for the arts and returned to Ontario College
of Art in the 1970's where she obtained a degree in Fine Arts,
at the sprightly age of 70. Even in her declining years, Geb
will be remembered by her intellect, her generosity and her tremendous
sense of humour. Gabrielle was the last surviving member of the
original DUBÉ family of Marengo and is predeceased by her brother
Marc DUBÉ, Jacqueline
(WHITBURN), Alice
DUBÉ and Jeanette
(BOUTIN).
Her beloved Frank died in 1994. She is survived by her four children
and their spouses: Mary Elizabeth (Betty) and Garth

Marie, Ann, Peter, Christopher, Reilly and Kathryn and her great-grandchildren
