laughter and joy we shared and lovingly let me go.

Zenardo built homes and communities in Georgian Triangle
By Michael
GENNINGS,
Page▼ 29
Dennis ZANARDO, a man who not only built hundreds of homes in
Wasaga Beach but invested in its community infrastructure, died
Monday following what family members say was a short and courageous
six-week battle with liver cancer.
His life was celebrated by an estimated 450 people Thursday at
the Wasage Beach RecPlex, a facility the man played a role in
building.
He was 51.
Marilyn RUTTAN, his companion for much of the last 12 years,
said that during his fight with cancer he was always optimistic
about the outcome.
ZANARDO was intimately associated with the local residential
construction industry. He was associated with Fernbrook Homes
and jointly owned Zancor Homes, a company with residential subdivision
developments in Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Stayner.
RUTTAN said
ZANARDO, a Brampton native who enjoyed some success
as a high school basketball player before entering the family
business, will be missed by a number of people.
Wasaga▼
Beach▼ mayor Cal
PATTERSON recalled
ZANARDO, a close friend,
on Monday afternoon.
"I think his character is what will be remembered," he said.
"Dennis was one of those larger than life guys.
PATTERSON said that
ZANARDO, a jovial six-foot, four-inch man,
loved Wasaga Beach and its people. The mayor added that
ZANARDO,
who owned part of Zancor Homes, was always trying to find a way
to better the community.
ZANARDO donated the landscaping for the new library when it opened
about 10 years ago. He donated the building in which the Wasaga
Beach Chamber of Commerce is now located and the brick canteen
building at the Wasaga Beach Sports Park and was a big financial
contributor each year to the Carly Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament.
"There▼ are so many things Dennis did for Wasaga Beach,"
PATTERSON
said.
His▼ generosity extended beyond the Beach.
ZANARDO also gave financially
to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital.
One of his favourite annual things was the Christmas party he
threw for Friends and owners of Zancor houses.
ZANARDO's one
condition was that people bring a toy for children of less fortunate
families.
"I spent Saturday with him. I was there about seven hours. Dennis
was a really good friend. My children called him Uncle Dennis
and when my daughter died he was right there by my side,"
PATTERSON
explained.
PATTERSON's 22-year-old daughter, Carly, died from Hodgkins Disease
in 1998.
ZANARDO tried to win a council seat in the early years but failed,
the mayor remembered.
Former▼ mayor Walter
BORTHWICK also spoke fondly of
ZANARDO on
Monday. He said their relationship started off professionally
about 15 years ago but added it quickly developed into a Friendship.
"Dennis▼ was such a warm and generous individual,"
BORTHWICK said.
"I'm sure to some, that because he was a big fellow who worked
in construction, he seemed a bit rough around the edges but he
was a very good man."
Paul PULLMAN was also Friends with

Community builder dies after battling cancer
Memorial service set for Thursday in Wasaga
By Michael
GENNINGS,

Dennis ZANARDO, a man who not only built hundreds of homes in
Wasaga Beach but invested in its community infrastructure, died
Monday following what family members say was a short and courageous
six-week battle with liver cancer.
He was 51.
Marilyn RUTTAN, his companion for much of the last 12 years,
said that during his fight with cancer he was always optimistic
about the outcome!
RUTTAN said
ZANARDO, a Brampton native who enjoyed some success
as a high school basketball player before entering the family
business, will be missed by a number of people.
"He was definitely loved," she said.
Wasaga▲
Beach▲ mayor Cal
PATTERSON recalled
ZANARDO, a close friend,
on Monday afternoon.
"I think his character is what will be remembered," he said.
"Dennis was one of those larger than life guys.
PATTERSON said that
ZANARDO, a jovial six-foot, four-inch man,
loved Wasaga Beach and its people. The mayor added that
ZANARDO,
who owned part of Zancor Homes, was always trying to find a way
to better the community.
"Dennis felt he could never do enough,"
PATTERSON said.
His touch can be found in countless places around town. For exam
pie, PATTERSON said that
ZANARDO donated the landscaping for
the new library when it opened about 10 years ago. As well, he
donated the building in which the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce
is now located.
ZANARDO also donated the brick canteen building at the Wasaga
Beach Sports Park and was a big financial contributor each year
to the Carly Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament.
"There▲ are so many things Dennis did for Wasaga Beach,"
PATTERSON
said.
His▲ generosity extended beyond the Beach.
PATTERSON
explained.
His 22-year-old daughter, Carly, died from Hodgkins Disease in
ZANARDO and
PATTERSON first met about 16 years ago shortly after
the developer began work in the community. Along with building
homes here and giving back to Wasaga,
ZANARDO tried to win a
council seat in the early years but failed, the mayor remembered.
PATTERSON said he learned of
ZANARDO's death early Monday morning,
around 4 a.m. He said that he went over to the house to be with
RUTTAN.
Former▲ mayor Walter
BORTHWICK also spoke fondly of
ZANARDO on
Monday. He said their relationship started off professionally
about 15 years ago but added it quickly developed into a Friendship.
"Dennis▲ was such a warm and generous individual,"
BORTHWICK said.
"I'm sure to some, that because he was a big fellow who worked
in construction, he seemed a bit rough around the edges but he
was a very good man."
It was just a week ago. that
BORTHWICK said he popped in to see
ZANARDO.
"We had a good chat and did a lot of catching up. Quite frankly
I knew he wasn't well but I was really surprised when I got the
phone call this morning."
BORTHWICK later added that "Dennis was one of those people who
made it very easy to remember the good times now that he is no
longer with us."
Paul PULLMAN was also Friends with
ZANARDO, who people lovingly
called Dennis the Menace. He said they met through a real estate
broker in 1992 when
PULLMAN, a freight broker, moved to Wasaga.
"We just hit it off,"
PULLMAN said. He recalled they often went
for lunch, would play cards, visit Casino Rama near Orillia or
just get together for some drinks.
"He was a gregarious guy who had a heart of gold,"
PULLMAN said.
"He was always helping people out when they were in trouble."
PULLMAN noted he last saw
ZANARDO
Sunday.
"He couldn't really talk but he understood what we said. We communicated
by holding hands and I talked to him."
Simcoe-Grey member of provincial parliament Jim
WILSON said Monday
he was saddened to learn of
ZANARDO's death.
"Dennis was a big supporter for all of my (political) years and
yet he never asked for anything. He was a big fellow and his
heart matched his size,"
WILSON said. "He was much too young
to die."
Former
Wasaga clerk Eric
COLLINGWOOD remarked that from his first
meeting he knew that the man would do Wasaga proud.
"His dreams were big, the projects were even bigger but being
guided by the goodness of his heart many of these dreams and
projects became reality." The Town of Wasaga Beach has grown
and prospered from just knowing 'Dennis the Menace'," said
COLLINGWOOD.
Despite ZANARDO's fun-loving and hard working ethic, he was also
a big reader,
RUTTAN said.
"I don't think many people knew that," she added.
Every day
ZANARDO would read The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail,
The National Post and The Toronto Sun.
She said he also read local community newspapers in the area.
"He always wanted to see them the day they came out," she said.
ZANARDO enjoyed a good relationship with the Metroland newspaper
chain, which includes The Sun. He often called the newspaper
in the late 1990s to let reporters know of charity events he
was corporately supporting, but shied away himself from the limelight.
A service in memory of
ZANARDO is scheduled for Thursday at the
RecPlex, 1724 Mosley Street, from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. The family
asks that donations in memory of
ZANARDO be made to the RecPlex.
ZANARDO was on the committee that oversees fundraising for the
multi-use facility,
ZANARDO is survived by his mother Jean, sister Nadine and brother
Eric.
