HOWARD, Charles John, C.A. (May 22, 1942-June 10, 2005)
Charlie passed away June 10, with his characteristic grace, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home in Oakville surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife and partner of 41 years, Diana (BAILLIE) his daughters and sons-in-law Baillie and Stephen SISOKIN; Susan and Jamie BONDEN; Jennifer and Chris WILSON; his son, Douglas grandchildren Jonathan, Benjamin, Madeline, Oliver, Charlotte, Katie and Emma; and his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Andrew SCACE and their sons Andrew and wife , Jennifer ILLSLEY) and Cameron. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Douglas Steven HOWARD, Q.C. of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Maurie (TURNER) HOWARD of Montreal. Charlie was educated at Bishops College School, Trinity College School and The University of Western Ontario (B.A.). He earned his C.A. designation in 1970 and was a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. He pursued a long and successful career in the investment industry with C.J. Hodgson and Co. Ltd., F.H. Deacon and Co., Ltd., and Nesbitt Thomson. He founded Howard, Barclay and Associates Ltd. in 1994 and served as its president and Chief Executive Officer. He was president of Ausnoram Holdings Limited and served as a director on many boards, including Bowater Incorporated, Anderson Exploration Ltd., Unicorp Energy Ltd. and Petromet Resources Limited. He was a past chairman of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada and a past chair of the Young Presidents' Organization, Upper Canada Chapter. He had served as a director of a number of organizations, including the Hugh MacMillan Rehabilitation Centre, Women's College Hospital Foundation and the Oakville Golf Club. He was a member of the Toronto Golf Club, Brays Island Plantation Golf Club, Secession Golf Club, South Carolina, and The Ford Plantation, Georgia. Charlie loved to spend time with his family and Friends golfing, fishing and hunting. He and his wife, Diana, and their many retrievers were active and successful competitors in field trials across Canada and the U.S. Charlie lived life to the fullest every day and was an inspiration to his family and Friends. His irrepressible sense of humour, his great story telling and wonderful laugh will last forever in the memories of his family, his many Friends and the extended Baillie family. Special thanks to the many caring and talented healthcare professionals who supported Charlie and his family over the past year - Dr. Ron Hinder and staff at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida; the oncology staff at the Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga, and Dr. Helen PYLE, Dr. Nora CURRAN- BLANEY and the Halton Community Care Access Centre, who supported us at home with nursing care and supplies. Special thanks to Dr. Brad Bowyer of Lagrange, Georgia; fellow field trialer and wonderful friend, who has seen us through every day of the past 16 months, and who has provided superb professional advice, a sympathetic ear, and an invaluable sounding board. Donna Marie Murray (née LUMLEY), 69. Mother MURRAY peacefully passed away on February 1, 2005 at University Hospital, London. She was surrounded by the love of her family and wrapped in the warmth of her comfort quilt. Donna was a vibrant and caring woman who was active in her church, Burns Mooreline United. She was a long standing member of the U.C.W. and a church elder. She will be greatly missed by her family and many Friends. Her spirit will continue to shine in all who knew her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years Harry, children Mike and Linda, Allan and Diane, Randy and Debbie, Carrie and Scott BONDY. Grandchildren Grant, Keith, Lindsey, Daniel, Sarah, Emily, Victoria, Olivia and Madelaine. Survived by brother Gene LUMLEY and his wife Gwen. At London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus, on Friday, June 10th, 2005 Sister Mary Denis MARENTETTE of the Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Diocese of London, in her 86th year and 65th year of religious life. Survived by her sister Gloria MARREN, her niece Anne Marie KERSEY, nephews Bob and Patrick RONDOT and her community, the Sisters of St. Joseph. Her parents, Denis MARENETTE and Ida (BONDY) and her sister Juliette (RONDOT) died some years ago.
Sister Mary Denis, native of Windsor, Ontario, was a graduate of Saint Mary's Academy and of the University of Windsor, pursued post graduate work in French at Laval University. Her contribution to education from 1943 to 1973 was Primary School to Senior Secondary and Principalship. At the end of her teaching ministry, she gave her life to a wide variety of jobs; homemaking and pastoral work in Leamington, serving at Marion Villa, London and hospitality and tutoring of students at Mount St. Joseph. Although Sister Mary Denis engaged in so many works of our community, her most profound work was her patient enduring blindness and total inaction for fourteen years in our infirmary, Ignatia Hall. In her 86th year, Barbara BURK/BURKE passed suddenly from complications related to C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) that she had been battling for more than two years. With her granddaughter Ali, and Ali's mother Sharon at her side she slipped away peacefully early Christmas morning. Barbara led a full and wonderful life having defeated cancer many years ago and more recently she overcame both a stroke and heart surgery. A native of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, she lived for many years in Pointe Claire, Quebec, prior to moving to Toronto. Barbara lived an independent and active life; she played bridge with her Friends regularly and in her last week she proudly defeated her son John at Scrabble. She was a kind and giving person and was actively involved in the lives of all her children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband William, her sister Dorothy, her brother Jack, and her beloved granddaughter Mariah. She leaves behind her sons William and John, her daughter Jane, her grandchildren Josh, Meghan, Ali and Sarah and her daughter-in-law Linda. She also leaves behind her brothers Charles and Robert SHREVE, and her sister Connie BONHAM, as well as many wonderful and caring Friends. Muskoka constable killed, partner injured as cruiser hits moose

The town of Bracebridge is known as the "heart of Muskoka," but for many in the small community, yesterday was simply a heartbreaking day.
A well-known local Ontario Provincial Police constable was killed, and his partner injured, when their cruiser collided with a moose at around 2: 30 a.m. while the two were en route to a domestic dispute call.
Twenty-nine-year-old Andrew POTTS, known to Friends as Andy, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His partner, 39-year-old Matt HANES, was airlifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto where he was in serious but stable condition, police said yesterday afternoon.
Constable POTTS, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiast, was born and raised in the Muskoka-Bracebridge area. He was, said his colleague and friend Constable Ted SMITH, a nice guy to talk to. He was a good listener, and had a good sense of humour."
He leaves his parents, a sister and his girlfriend.
The accident shocked and saddened the 65-officer Bracebridge Muskoka police detachment and the surrounding community, said Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Gwen BONIFACE, who was on scene by 5 a.m. in an area that is at least two hours north of Toronto.
"It's a terrible collision, an odd set of circumstances, and a tremendous loss for us," Ms. BONIFACE said. "Andy POTTS was from this area, he grew up in this community, and you can feel, not just in this detachment but from the response we've had in the community today, that this is being really felt right across the Muskoka area.
"Obviously, a collision with a moose is rare, but that's what we do -- every day we're out there driving. I know there are officers who will step back today and say, 'There but for the grace of God go I.' "
Constable POTTS is the first on-duty Ontario Provincial Police officer to be killed this year, and the 90th in the organization's history. The last time an officer was killed in an accident involving a moose was in 1963 near North Bay. The last five Ontario Provincial Police deaths have been as a result of motor vehicle accidents.
Bracebridge was where Constable POTTS most wanted to be, Constable SMITH said. The seven-year Ontario Provincial Police veteran spent two years at the Pickle Lake detachment in Northwestern Ontario before returning to his hometown detachment.
"This is the type of guy, who is a solid officer, who you wanted to go to calls with because you knew he was there to back you up if you had any problems," Constable SMITH said.
His on-duty partner, Constable HANES, is a 14-year Ontario Provincial Police veteran who is married with three young children.
The exact cause of the accident is still unknown, police said, although the night was foggy and the moose was standing on Highway 169 as the officers travelled west to the domestic dispute near Bala.
Fall is usually the peak season for moose accidents, but because the animals are heat-sensitive, they are likely travelling during the cool nighttime hours to cope with the recent heat wave, Howard SMITH, senior biologist at the Ministry of Natural Resources, said.
Moose can be naturally attracted to highways because they represent the edge of a forest, and they often choose not to move as a vehicle approaches, he said.
An investigation into the crash is under way. Constable SMITH would not say if the cruiser was travelling quickly, or if it had its emergency lights on.
"A moose is probably one of the most dangerous of all animals to run into," said Bruce LEESON, senior environmental assessment scientist with Parks Canada.
"It has such tall legs, you don't actually hit the body, you hit the legs and it comes across the hood and then takes off the roof of the car," Dr. LEESON said.
It is the equivalent of running head-on into the back of a tractor-trailer, said Ontario Provincial Police Sergeant Jerry BLACE, who has seen the results of such accidents.
You have a 1-in-200 chance of being killed if you hit a moose with your car, compared to a 1-in-3,500 chance if you hit a deer, according to data from the U.S. National Co-Operative Highway Research Program.
Canadian member of Parliament Steven FLETCHER hit a moose and survived north of Winnipeg in 1996, but he now uses a wheelchair due to injuries he suffered in the collision. He became the first quadriplegic elected to Parliament in the last federal election.
The most recent Transport Canada report, from March of 2003, said that four to eight collisions of large animals and vehicles happen every hour in Canada.
Ontario has an estimated 115,000 moose, most of them in the northern part of the province.
