Peacefully at Carefree Lodge in North York on Sunday, April 3, 2005, in her 87th year. Lovingly remembered by her sister Lois BERTRAM (Russell) of Thornhill, her brother Stan McBRIDE (Berta) of Peterborough and the late Howard McBRIDE (Jean.) She will be fondly remembered by her nieces Vicki, Cindy, Tina and Susan and her nephew Stanley, the late Grant and 8 great-nieces and nephews. Ruth was proud to be the first woman lifeguard in Ontario. She was active in promoting opera by sitting on the President's Council for the Canadian Opera Company. She was a proud member of the World Federalists, an extension of the U.N., and the Monarchist League of Canada. Ruth was also a life member of the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada and a member of the United Empire Loyalists. Ruth's fondness for art was expressed through her many paintings. She was also an ardent fan of the National Ballet of Canada. At her request, funeral arrangements are private, followed by cremation. Born to May and Victor BERTRAND in Milo, Alberta, Norris grew up in a farming community. He attended the University of Alberta graduating in medicine in 1948. He interned at the Royal Alex Hospital in Edmonton and married Jean LAYNG from Regina, Saskatchewan in 1950. He practiced family medicine in Calgary for seven years and then returned to the University of Alberta to complete a specialty in obstetrics and gynaecology in 1960. Norris, Jean and their four daughters returned to Calgary where Norris practiced obstetrics and gynaecology for 36 years. He was an associate professor in the new medical school at the Foothills Hospital, University of Calgary. Upon his retirement in 1987, he had delivered over 5000 babies. Jean and Norris moved to Ottawa in 1987 to be nearer to their daughters and grandchildren. Known as Grandpere to his grandchildren, Norris took great delight in watching them grow up. His only granddaughter Emily lived in Ottawa and was very special to him. The family expresses gratitude to the caring staff of the Starwood Nursing Home. Valerie WALLS passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2005 in Boulder, Colorado at the age of 58. Survived by her companion and best friend Armando GINGRAS; her beloved daughters, Betsy JOHNSON (Lee) of Fulton, Kentucky, Sarah CHIMILESKI (Brian) of Golden, Colorado and Meaghan WALLS of Breckenridge, Colorado sisters Diana FERGUSON (Alan) of Haliburton, Jennifer BEDWELL (Brian) of Ottawa and brother Edward BERWICK (Karen) of Milton. Predeceased by her parents. Valerie lived a full and active life in Toronto, Ottawa, Lagos Nigeria, New York City and, since 1989, Boulder Colorado. While in Boulder she co-founded the Colorado Wheelchair Tennis Association and was recently honoured with the Colorado Wheelchair Tennis Association Lifetime Achievement Award. She will be sadly missed by her family and a multitude of Friends who will always be grateful for her life.
