Deeply missed
by so many Friends and colleagues, in particular Leonard

As a respected member of the judicial and legal communities,
Joe was admired for his sense integrity and honesty. In 1978,
after a 23-year career as lawyer and Queen's Counsel, Joe was
appointed a County Court Judge in the City of Toronto. At the
age of 49, Joe was one of the youngest judges ever appointed
and he served on the bench until 1997 as a Superior Court Judge.
While law ruled most of his working days, his true passion was
hockey. His contributions to the sport in Canada and internationally
were far reaching - from coaching house league and the University
of Toronto Varsity Blues, then President of the Central Pro League,
Director with Hockey Canada and eventually Arbitrator with the
National Hockey League. Joe loved being in a rink and around
young people. While he experienced so many rewarding moments
in hockey his greatest thrill was being able to coach his four
sons when they were young. There was no prouder parent in the
arena 7 nights a week! Words which best describe Joe are - loyal
friend and kind soul. He used to say, 'a person's wealth is not
measured by the amount of money in his bank account but rather,
the number of Friends he acquires throughout his life'. This
would mean that Joseph Charles

Two bodies found in Cornwall area
Canadian Press
Cornwall -- The discovery of two bodies over the weekend near
Cornwall is being treated as a double homicide.
The▼ bodies of two men, Peter and Jade
BENEDICT, aged 31 and 27,
were discovered Saturday morning by a customer in the front yard
of an auto shop in West St. Andrews, a village about 10 kilometres
north of Cornwall.
Police called the deaths "suspicious," but released no details
on the conditions of the bodies or information on possible suspects.
A post-mortem on the bodies will be conducted to determine the
cause of death.
Residents near the garage said they heard blasts that sounded
like gunshots.
The two men were from the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, which straddles
the borders of Quebec, Ontario and the U.S.
Officers were also called after a motorist discovered a beaten
and bloodied man who crawled out of an abandoned farmhouse around
8 a.m. Saturday morning.
Police would not comment on any possible connection between the
two incidents.
The garage was run by a man who lived next door to the abandoned
farmhouse where the beaten man was found.

Two found dead near Cornwall
Canadian Press
Cornwall, Ontario -- The discovery of two bodies over the weekend
near Cornwall is being treated as a double homicide.
The▲ bodies of Peter and Jade
BENEDICT, aged 31 and 27, were found
Saturday morning by a customer in the front yard of an auto shop
in West St. Andrews, a village about 10 kilometres north of Cornwall.
In a news release, police called the deaths "suspicious," but
gave no details on the conditions of the bodies or information
on possible suspects.
An autopsy was to be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The two men were from the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, which straddles
the borders of Quebec, Ontario and the United States.
Officers were also called after a motorist discovered a beaten
and bloodied man who crawled out of an abandoned farmhouse around
8 a.m. Saturday.
Police would not comment on any possible connection between the
beating and the discovery of the bodies.
The garage where the bodies were found was run by a man who also
lived next door to the abandoned farmhouse where the beaten man
was found.
The beating victim was in hospital as of Saturday night, but
his condition was not released.
Ontario Provincial Police were investigating the farmhouse, which
is out of the jurisdiction of Cornwall police.
Residents near the garage where the bodies were found said they
heard blasts that sounded like gunshots.
Pat and Raymond
DELORMES were relaxing with Friends on their
porch when they heard what sounded like three shots just after
midnight.
"It was loud, man, it was like a stick of dynamite," Pat
DELORMES
told the Ottawa Citizen Saturday.
"I was a hunter for 25 years. I know the difference between a
shotgun, a rifle, a.32 special, whatever. It was shots we heard
last night."
