BELLISLE,
Ronald, 1988 -- Died This Day
Thursday, May 12, 2005, Page S9
Municipal politician born in Penetanguishene, Ontario, in 1940.
A descendant of French settlers, he fought an expansion of French
education in his area. An anglophone, he was bitterly opposed
to the construction of École Secondaire LeCaron, a unilingual
French high school, and as a councillor in the 1970s, he had
blocked attempts by school supporters for zoning changes that
would allow the school to be built next to the town's English
high school. In 1980, he defeated the incumbent mayor in a fierce
fight but soon afterward, the Ontario government ordered the
school built. Mr.
BELLISLE declined to attend its opening. He
was acclaimed mayor in two subsequent municipal elections. He
