Fifty-five years ago, 350 members of the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, were en route to Fort Lewis, Washington., and thence to the Korean War when their troop train collided with an eastbound passenger express near Canoe River, British Columbia Twelve soldiers were killed instantly, four died aboard the rescue train, and one died in hospital. They were Arden ATCHISON (Loon Lake, Saskatchewan.), Weldon BARKHOUSE (Wolfville, Nova Scotia), Norman CARROLL (Pennant, Saskatchewan.), Frederick CONWAY (Grand Falls, Newfoundland.), Robert CRAIG (Foam Lake, Saskatchewan.), Austin GEORGE (Eight Island Lake, Newfoundland.), Urbain LÉVESQUE (Ottawa), Robert MANLEY (Niagara Falls, Ontario), Basil McKEOWN (Moscow, Ontario), Albert ORR (Calgary), David OWENS (Granby, Quebec), Leslie SNOW (Saint John's), Albert STROUD (Howley, Newfoundland.), Joseph THISTLE (Conception Bay, Newfoundland.), James WENKERT (Cowansville, Quebec), James WHITE/WHYTE (Placentia Bay, Newfoundland.) and William WRIGHT (Neepawa, Manitoba.) The footplate crews of both locomotives also died. They were Harvey CHURCH, troop-train engineer; his fireman, Henry PROSINUK; Jack STINSON, transcontinental engineer; his fireman, Adam OLESCHUK.

It is with great sorrow that her family announces that Corinne died early in the morning of January 12, 2005 at Toronto General Hospital. Corinne was the beloved wife of Dan, mother of Ken (Tracey LEWIN), Michael (Stephanie) and Janice (Ira BARKIN) and adoring grandmother of Cassidy, Kylie, Cole and Jake. She is also survived by her brothers, Rob MANN, Murray NITIKMAN and Gary NITIKMAN and predeceased by her parents, Dave and Rose NITIKMAN. Corinne endured the ravages of scleroderma for over twenty years never complaining and always lovingly taking care of her family and Friends. She constantly demonstrated a concern for the welfare of others and gave freely of herself to her community. To the end, Corinne sought out the good in people and she never permitted her condition to cloud her positive attitude to life. She will be missed by her family and many Friends and remembered for her generosity of spirit, wisdom, kindness and her loving acceptance. God bless her dear soul. Funeral services will be held at Temple Har Zion, 7360 Bayview Avenue, Thornhill on Friday, January 14, 2005 at noon. Shiva will be held at 57 Walker Avenue, Toronto. Step-daughter of Mark McNALLY. Mother of Tom, Peter, Brian and Bob. Grandmother of Mark, Michelle, Jane, Amanda, Gregory and Ian. She will be sadly missed by both her family and Friends. A memorial service will be held in Etobicoke at the residence of Bob and Pat MILLER on Saturday, April 9th, 2005 at 2: 00 p.m. Billie's wishes were to be cremated and buried in a small cemetery on the shores of Twelve Mile Lake in Carnarvon, Ontario. Ray is survived by his loving wife Jayne Watson GOWANS, son Peter Ralph and daughter-in-law France, his daughter Anne and son-in-law Gary BARLOW, his stepson Robert, his wife Karen, Douglas GOWANS, his grandchildren Jennifer and Meghan GRESHAM, Natalie and her husband David DOTEY, John BARLOW, Peter and Jessica GOWANS, and his great-grand_son Kyle DOTEY. Ray is predeceased by his first wife Jean (TODD) in 1978.
Born in Craddock, Virginia in 1921. Enlisted in September 1939 with Perth Regiment, transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was discharged in November 1945 as a Flying Officer, having completed a Tour of Operations with Coastal Command.
Graduated from McGill University in 1950 (Engineering). Retired from Canadian Johns-Manville Corporation in 1983 as Vice President and Mine Manager, Jeffrey Mine. Served on the Board of Directors of Johns-Manville Canada until February 1991.
Ray spent his retirement years between Healey Lake (summers), Naples, Florida (winters), and Toronto.
Friends may call at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West. TOTH and Marnie for the respect, care and compassion they always showed Dad and to Rusty DRAPER for his spiritual guidance during Dad's illness. Also our thanks to the nurses at Bayshore who with their help and assistance we were able to keep Dad at home where he so much wanted to be. Our heartfelt thanks to our sister Betty, his true caregiver, who for the last few months of Dad's life gave him the most amazing, loving, tender care, tending to his every want and needs as only someone who loved him so much could. He couldn't have been in better or more loving hands. As much as our hearts ache over the loss of our Dad we are comforted by the fact that he is gone to be with Mom and Chris. (Retired employee City of Toronto) Peacefully on Friday, November 25, 2005 at the Humber River Regional Hospital - Church Site, in his 82nd year. Charles, beloved husband of the late Esther. Dear father of Wayne. Brother of Mary BARLOW, Jean MILWARD and Jim BEATTIE. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Ward Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Rd. (north of Lawrence Ave.), Weston from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday. A service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Passed away peacefully on November 26, 2005 at age 83. Dearly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty (née BARLOW,) loving son David LOVEGROVE and his wife Karyn and loving daughter Wendy Jane LOVEGROVE. Born in Wales, Tommy began to sing at the age of sixteen, winning talent competitions in England and Wales. He joined the Royal Air Force in World War 2 and, besides his job of keeping the 'Spitfires' flying, he sang with the Royal Air Force band in London along with a musician named Harry Lewis who later married Vera Lynn, 'Sweetheart of the Forces'. He formed his own band in London after the war. In 1956, Tommy, Betty and son David emigrated to Canada. His love for singing was always there. He entered a competition for 'Lipton Search for Talent' in 1956 (judged by Gordie Tapp) and won. His long-time musician friend from England, Jack Lane, formed his own band, 'The Jack Lane Seven' and Tommy sang with him for many years at the Royal Overseas Club in Toronto. They also did stints at 'The Old Mill' and many other venues around Toronto. As well, he enjoyed singing gospel music and did so at many church locations in the greater Greater Toronto Area. He performed on both television and radio many times. He sang Remembrance Day and gospel songs on the '100 Huntley Street' television program. He was interviewed on Radio CHWO (AM 740) by announcer Jim Paulson and the late June Sonin where he also sang 'When Joanna Loved Me', a favourite of his many fans. After being interviewed by the late Peter Gzowski on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio's 'Morningside', Peter himself remarked..."That Tommy Lovegrove... he's cool!" He performed for many years at the 'Seniors Jubilee' at Roy Thomson Hall and was very happy to receive their Award of Distinction for 1999 presented by the 'Forever Young' newspaper. On another note, a second child, Wendy Jane, came into Tommy and Betty's life in 1963. Tommy's 'other life' was in the business world. He was general manager of 'Ampak Plastic Company' and later in sales with the 'Wheaten Glass Company'. He was always also involved in other entrepreneurial sidelines. When he retired from the business world, he recorded several musical works with Friends and family. His last years were spent happily singing at many Seniors' residences accompanied by his friend of many years, Dave POLS. Dave was a great support to Tommy as he struggled with performing (due to the onset of Alzheimer's Disease) in the last few years. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at the William Osler Health Centre and the 'Alzheimer Society's Day Programme' staff for their wonderful care. Thank you, too, to all of our dear Friends for their support. There will be a visitation/celebration of Tommy's life on Wednesday November 30, 2005 at the Scott Funeral Home, 289 Main Street North, Brampton (905-451-1100) between 1: 00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tommy's memory to a charity of choice, or the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Palliative Care Unit of the William Osler Health Centre (Brampton location.)
