GILLINGHAM, Reverend Ralph G.
Passed away suddenly March 27, 2005 at age 84. He was predeceased by his dearly beloved wife of 52 years Vera, with who he is now forever re-united, sisters Hilda, Sybil, Beatrice and Annette, brother Jim, and survived by brother Gordon and sisters-in-law Grace and Mini. He will be dearly missed by son Robert, daughters Judy and Barbara (ANDERSON) and son-in-law Bill. Numerous nephews and nieces spread across Canada will recall his affection and interest in their lives. Ralph was born and raised in Safe Harbour, Newfoundland, and subsequently gained degrees from Dalhousie and McGill Universities. His career as a United Church Minister spanned over 40 years at churches in Newfoundland, Quebec, and Ontario. His upbringing in a setting of frequent hardship, large families, and a community where everyone helped each other was to shape his future. His love of the church as a calling to serve others was the mainstay of his life and he cherished his role as minister in each community he served. He was a warm person with a quick sense of humour, and above all, a devoted father whose love and interest in his children was the highlight of his life. In between serving his churches he also managed to indulge a lifelong interest in building things by overseeing the construction of one church, and erecting with his own hands several beautiful cottages in Ontario. His legacy to his children and all who knew him was that a simple abiding faith and an enthusiasm for helping others will yield an abundance of riches. The family wishes to thank family physician Dr. F. COGAN, and Homecare nurse Jonathon for the kind attention and care administered to Ralph, and Ralph's lifelong friend Reverend Lind BARBOUR for his support and encouragement. They also want to acknowledge the wonderful support provided over 8 years to both Ralph and Vera by Homecare worker Judy. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or the United Church Missions and Service Fund. A memorial service is planned at Manor Road United Church at 2: 00 p.m. on Saturday April 30, 2005.

Pair's death in car deepens distress at school
Students already split over sex-assault, harassment charges against 16 youths
By Unnati GANDHI and Joe FRIESEN, Friday, November 18, 2005, Page A13
A school stunned by the arrest of 16 young people on charges of sexual assault and harassment was rocked again yesterday by the death of one of its students.
Police found the bodies of 17-year-old Anna ZARNOCH, a Grade 12 student at James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School, and William RODRIGUEZ, 22, just after 6 a.m., yesterday in Mr. RODRIGUEZ's garage in the city's west end.
Police called the deaths accidental, saying the two probably died of carbon-monoxide inhalation after the old Cadillac they were sitting in had been running for hours overnight with the heater on and the garage door closed.
A police spokeswoman said Ms. ZARNOCH's death is not related to the criminal investigation at the school.
"She went to the school, but she was in no way connected to the sexual-harassment case," Constable Wendy DRUMMOND said, adding that Ms. ZARNOCH was not a witness in the case. "At this point, we're ruling it an accidental death from carbon-monoxide poisoning,"
The teen's death plunged a divided school further into disarray. Many senior students, some of them facing charges, are waiting for the court case to begin as well as mourning a classmate's death. For a school with slightly more than 600 students from Grades 9 through 12, the effect will likely be significant.
On Monday, 14 students were taken from their classes, arrested and handcuffed. They joined two others accused in a case that has sent shockwaves throughout the city. Police allege that a 16-year-old student was sexually assaulted and harassed both inside and outside the high school for more than a year. In one incident, police say, the girl was dragged from a school hallway and assaulted in a stairwell before being taken to a bathroom and assaulted again.
Staff convened an emergency meeting with students, parents and police Wednesday night to discuss the impact of the alleged assaults and the arrests of the 16 students. The event apparently did little to calm frayed nerves.
Some parents said they were considering removing their children from the school, while others said their children were afraid to return. A few students said they were ashamed to wear their school uniforms in public.
Many students are upset with the way the case was handled.
They say their classmates shouldn't have been arrested at school.
They have accused police and school officials of racism and of being heavy-handed in dealing with the accused, all of whom are black. Some have stayed away from school since they attended a bail hearing for their jailed Friends on Tuesday.
Ms. ZARNOCH lived in a high-rise building just south of the school near Keele and Finch Avenues.
Mr. RODRIGUEZ, who was her boyfriend, according to family members, lived in the Lansdowne house near St. Clair Avenue with his mother, sister and brother-in-law.
The brother-in-law, Al BARBOZA, said at the home yesterday that the pair had gone into the garage about 7: 30 p.m. on Wednesday. Mr. RODRIGUEZ's mother checked on them at about 1 a.m. and thought they were asleep.
"They stayed in the car the whole night," Mr. BARBOZA said. "I can't believe they were out there sleeping, it's so cold."
When the mother found them without any vital signs at about 6 a.m., she called police.
Mr. BARBOZA said he didn't know Ms. ZARNOCH very well, but knew that she had been reported missing by her family on Wednesday.
"Whenever he gets a girlfriend, I don't know what he does. He brings them over here all the time."
While Mr. BARBOZA said that the Cadillac parked in the garage rarely gets driven, upstairs tenant Anabela ALMEIDA said that she had seen Ms. ZARNOCH several times before and knew that Mr. RODRIGUEZ often went to listen to the radio in the car.
"The girl stays at the house sometimes," said Ms. ALMEIDA, who had been living on the second floor of the two-storey home for the past seven months.
The bodies have been taken to the coroner's office for autopsies scheduled for today.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Sean Patrick McKENNA of Toronto, aged 41, on March 4, 2005. Sean died accidentally near his family cottage, a place he loved to be with his Friends and family. Sean could not have been a prouder father of Katie, aged eight, and Michael, aged four. He delighted in every moment of their lives and enthusiastically supported and participated in all of their interests. He was a gentle and loving father who, at six feet seven inches appeared imposing but tenderly ministered to their every need. He nurtured wonderful values, humour, and an interest in the world around them. He is the loving husband of Kathy HENDERSON, her best friend, her strength, and partner. Kathy and Sean were married May 17, 1991. Sean grew up in a wonderful family in Schomberg, Ontario. He leaves behind loving and much loved parents Neil and Ann McKENNA. He also leaves warm and devoted siblings - brother Neil (Carol) McKENNA, Stephen BOUCHER, Joe (Soen-Young) McKENNA, Gerry (Tammy) BARCLAY, and his sister Shannon (Ian) DAVIS. He also leaves loving in-laws Don and Mary HENDERSON, brother-in-law Michael (Lisa) HENDERSON and Jane (Sean) BAYLEY. He also leaves many nieces and nephews Neil, Liam, Evan, Maggie, Nolan, Sarah, Ben, Owen, Alison, Oliver, and Mary. Sean enjoyed his status as much loved uncle and he knew how to make each child feel special. He also leaves many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sean enjoyed life immensely. He was defined by his ability to make Friends and to be grateful and happy for the company of them. He was also a wonderful friend, who combined rare depth and compassion with razor sharp wit. Sean loved a party. He was gregarious, charming, and extroverted and people loved to be around him. He had a sense of humour second to none, a wonderful speaking voice and he was often called upon to speak at his Friends' special occasions. His Friends are too numerous to count and live around the corner and all over the world. Sean graduated from King City Secondary School where he played both football and 'Reach for the Top'. He attended York University studying economics and then graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1988 where he made some of his most abiding Friendships. He was called to the bar in 1990 and practised commercial litigation in Toronto. Many people who walked in Sean's office left as lifelong Friends. Sean lived in the Beach where he enjoyed coaching soccer, taking the kids tobogganing, running on the boardwalk and, of course, enjoying a pint in the local pub especially if it involved a trivia game and teasing his buddy Andrew. He was a member of the Balmy Beach Club, Scarborough Golf&Country Club and enjoyed being an active and giving member of the Beach community.
