Deadly two days on our roads
Total of four people die in collisions Monday morning and Sunday
By Bill HENRY,
Tuesday,
October 25, 2005, Page A1
Four people died in two highway collisions, one near Wiarton
early Monday and another at Burgoyne Sunday.
The two unrelated collisions both involved three vehicles and
happened at controlled intersections. Two people died in each.
Highway 6 was closed for several hours Monday morning as police
diverted traffic around the intersection of Grey Road 17 where
a farm tractor, pickup truck and a car were all involved in a
collision that killed two people at about 6: 30 a.m., Bruce Peninsula
Ontario Provincial Police said.
Steven McCARTNEY, 43, of Owen Sound, the driver of the truck,
and his passenger Jeremy
McCARTNEY, 27, of Hepworth, were both
pronounced dead at the collision scene two kilometres south of
Wiarton.
South
Bruce
Ontario Provincial Police spokesman Const. Dave
MEYER
said it was raining and still dark when the crash happened.
The farm tractor was travelling north along the side of the road.
The pickup truck collided with the side of the tractor and came
to a stop upside down in the northbound lane.
Soon after, a car heading north collided with the truck and ended
up in the west ditch. The 19-year-old driver, of Ayton, was in
serious condition in hospital and a passenger was also injured.
Their names had not been released Monday evening because next
of kin had to be notified,
MEYER said.
The tractor driver was not injured.
At about 5 p.m. Sunday at Burgoyne, two Windsor women who were
passengers in a Jaguar were killed and three other people injured
when the Jag struck a truck and then a van at the junction of
Bruce Road 17 and Bruce Road 3.
The pickup truck was heading east on Road 17 and did not completely
stop at the intersection. It collided with the Jag heading south
on Road 3, which then struck the van, Saugeen Shores Police said
in a news release.
Both the pickup driver, Christopher
LEE, and passenger Helena
LEE of Brampton were uninjured.
The driver of the Jaguar, Marlene
LANCASTER, 56, of Windsor,
was taken to hospital in Owen Sound with non life-threatening
injuries. One passenger, Leona
ROBERTS, 77, of LaSalle, was pronounced
dead at the scene. Another passenger, Flora
ASSELTINE, 84, of
Windsor was taken to hospital in Southampton and pronounced dead
shortly after.
A nine-month-old infant in the van was in a car seat and was
not injured.
Lisa COPPING, 24, of Paisley, the driver of the van, was treated
for injuries at Chesley hospital.
A female passenger, Holly
BARBE, 50, of Port Elgin was taken
first to Chesley hospital, then airlifted to London with major
but not life-threatening injuries.
The collision was still under investigation Monday and there
were no charges.

daughter-in-law Cathrin
BRADBURY
(Toronto.▼) Cherished by six
grandchildren: Janet and Stephanie, David and Bridgeen, Kelly

HART of
Toronto, Janet was educated at Havergal College and University
of Toronto, from which she graduated with a degree in art history
in 1937, despite the sudden death of her father at the height
of the depression, and the loss of her younger sister Kathleen.
Like her mother, who rescued the family by becoming one of Toronto's
first real estate saleswomen, Janet was a true wayfaring soul,
a woman of tremendous vitality, purpose and style who made an
indelible impression on all who met her. A vision of elegance
throughout her life, with a straight-stemmed briar pipe clamped
in her mouth for too much of it, Janet was also a natural executive
and committed volunteer. In the early 1950's, she and David led
the initiative to expand and rebuild the Art Gallery of Hamilton,
where Janet worked as first President of the Women's Committee.
Moving to Toronto in 1960, she re-directed her formidable energy
to the Art Gallery of Ontario, again becoming President of the
Women's Committee. But Janet's greatest talent was people. Her
conservative background always surrendered to her love of character
and delight in entertaining. Impeccably well-mannered and compulsively
hospitable, she collected devoted admirers from every walk of
life and half a dozen countries. Her house in Toronto and the
family cottage in Muskoka were always filled with flowers, art
and creative people drawn magnetically to the lively doyenne
with a pipe in her mouth. For a ll her natural liberality, however,
Janet, whose life was anchored by 63 years of devotion to her
husband David, clung tenaciously to her core beliefs in family,
civic duty and Christian love. She never shied from work of any
sort and never hesitated to reach out and help others. She was
the unbudgeable rock of loyalty and good sense to which her entire
extended family clung in times of trouble. Even in Janet's last
decade, clouded by the effects of a debilitating stroke, her
new Friends at Selectacare and Belmont House recognized her as
an extraordinary woman of great character. She died with lithographs
by Jack Bush and Marc Chagall over her bed and angels all around.
Friends are invited to visit the#4-7 p.m. Monday, April
4 at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West (2

BROADLEY,
Vera▲ (née
CASTLE) (January 20, 1927-November 7, 2005)
Peacefully at the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga. Loving
wife of the late Harold
BROADLEY. Dear mother to Patricia
BARBER
of Barrie, David (wife
Andrea
GRIFFIN) of Mississauga and Ian
(wife Diane▲
CHIASSON) of Montreal. Wonderful Grammie to Thomas,
Kevin and Grace. Vera was the youngest of 11 children born to
Jennie Ellen
IRVING and Walter Charles
CASTLE of Montreal. She
is predeceased by her brothers Walter, Frank, Albert, Edward
and Victor and her sisters Jennie, Doris, Katie, Ada and Ivy.
Vera and Harold enjoyed forty wonderful years together, starting
out in Rosemount, Quebec and later moving to Roxboro, a suburb
of Montreal. Vera loved dogs, and was a registered breeder of
championship Shelties. When at home, Vera was constantly shadowed
by at least one of her Shelties, often by two or three, and always
by her beloved Papillion, M'Lord. In 1985, Vera and Harold moved
from Roxboro to Belleville, Ontario, where they joined Vera's
sister Ivy and Harold's brother Bob, in an active retirement.
In Belleville they were both involved in the Seniors' Community,
in particular with the Kiwanis Club. After Harold's passing in
1995 Vera moved to Mississauga to be closer to her first grandchild,
Thomas. Little did she know that Kevin and Grace would soon follow!
In recent years, Vera's health failed her but she still managed
to smile and joke with the many health care professionals who
came to know her. Vera's family would like to thank all who have
supported her over the last few years. In particular, we thank
the staff of the Regency Retirement Residence as well as the
staff of Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre. Mrs.
BROADLEY is resting at the Funeral Home of Skinner and Middlebrook
Ltd., 128 Lakeshore Rd. E. (1 block west of Hurontario St.),
Mississauga (parking off Ann St.) on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9
p.m. Funeral Service in the Chapel on Friday, November 11, 2005
at 1: 00 p.m. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, Vera's family would
ask for donations to the Trillium Health Centre Foundation.
