Crisis nurse slain by half-brother
Family and Friends of Lorraine and Paul
EGAN are stunned by the
Sarnia murder-suicide.
By Patrick
MALONEY,
Free
Press
Reporter
A London native slain by her suicidal half-brother was a dedicated
nurse who cared for Sarnia's mentally ill, loved ones recalled
yesterday.
Colleagues were stunned -- and family members devastated -- by
the killing last Thursday of 29-year-old Lorraine
EGAN, a veteran
nurse with Bluewater hospital's mental-health unit.
She was shot inside her upscale Sarnia apartment complex by sibling
Paul EGAN.
The 44-year-old father of six then shot himself, police said.
"I don't know what happened," Audrey
HATCHARD,
Lorraine
EGAN's
maternal grandmother, said in a brief telephone interview yesterday.
"I just know it's a tragedy."
To HATCHARD, the details leading to Thursday's shooting at 1285
Sandy Lane -- the posh lakeside highrise Lorraine had called
home since February -- were still unclear. The brutal slaying
was made all the more painful because of Paul
EGAN's involvement.
"It's a terrible thing and none of us expected it,"
HATCHARD
said.
Lorraine and Paul
EGAN share the same father, Maurice, who died
about five years ago.
Ellen EGAN,
Lorraine's grieving mother, declined comment.
Sarnia police were also tight-lipped for similar reasons yesterday.
Because they often bring the mentally ill to the emergency ward,
many officers knew Lorraine
EGAN and worked with her regularly,
Const. Bill
BAINES said.
So-called crisis intervention nurses also deal with victims of
sexual assault and other traumatic incidents. Lorraine
EGAN's
dedication to the job was praised by
BAINES and other colleagues.
"Lorraine was known for bringing fun to the unit," said Donna
MORREAU, who worked with her for seven years. "She was very vibrant
(and) energetic.
"There's still quite a sense of loss at the unit. Her loss is
extremely difficult."
Lorraine EGAN grew up in London and fell in love with Sarnia
while studying nursing at Lambton College. She had worked at
Bluewater hospital for seven years.
Sarnia police, called to Sandy Lane about 6: 30 p.m. Thursday,
found two bodies in a main-floor common area of the 12-storey
complex. Investigators focused on a short hallway leading to
a rear exit.
A tenant living above the hallway said he heard two shots, a
woman's screams, then two more shots.
Though police immediately deemed the incident a murder-suicide,
the victims weren't identified until yesterday.
The building has security cameras, but details of any images
captured haven't been released.
Little is known about Paul
EGAN, who lived in Forest. Contrary
to one widespread rumour, he is not a former Sarnia police officer,
Mayor Mike
BRADLEY said.
He was, however, an active member of his family, said
HATCHARD,
included in all holiday gatherings.
The loss of Lorraine
EGAN has stunned the clan, she added.
"She was the most beautiful girl to look at,"
HATCHARD said,
noting her lone granddaughter was a perennial honours student.
"They (Lorraine and her mother) were very close. They contacted
each other two and three times a day."

Peter
At Toronto, on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at 4: 00 p.m., John,
at age 91, peacefully slipped away to his eternal rest surrounded
by his family and secure in his faith, both of which were so
very important to him. Loving and cherished husband of Margaret

WISE, Miranda

Darcy CALLAGHAN and his fiancée Taissa
PRYCHODKO, and by his
great-grandchildren Neeve and Kai
AXELRAD and Zoe
BLACK.
John
led a full and remarkable life that began in Newcastle upon Tyne
on November 23, 1913. He joined the British Army as a very young
man and rose to the rank of Major on a journey that took him
to India with the Royal Horse Artillery, Singapore and Europe
as well as North Africa, Iraq, Egypt and Italy during World War
2. One of John's joys later in life was the time he spent as
a retiree working as a court clerk for the family court of Ontario.
John learned a lot about the fine work and difficult decisions
that must be wrestled with on a daily basis by the lawyers and
judges in their efforts to protect a fair and just society. John
never stopped learning and was always deeply interested in public
affairs and international politics. Though he spent many years
as a soldier, he was deeply saddened by the expansion of violence
and wars throughout the world, especially the involvement of
foreign troops that escalate these circumstances and expose the
soldiers to unnecessary danger. A mass will be held at Our Lady
of Perpetual Help Church, 78 Clifton Road (at St. Clair Avenue
East), on Saturday, January 29th, at 1: 30 p.m.
