Passed away peacefully ending his brave battle with cancer, at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket on Tuesday, December 6th, 2005. Walter of Churchill, Ontario, was 61 years of age. Survived by his wife Marita (VAN ALEBEEK,) children Stephen (Kristi) and Nikki (Jon) FAWCETT, and grand_son MacGregor. He will also be sadly missed by his brothers Bill (Karen) and Tom (Brenda), and his many nieces, nephews, and Friends. At Walter's request, cremation has taken place and a private family ceremony will be held in Magnetawan where he had many fond memories. He retired from O.H.C. in 1970 to pursue his love of travel and chasing the sun. Surviving are his son Robert (Gail) ALEBON of Sackville, Nova Scotia and daughter, Anne (Joe) STAUFER of Vail, Colorado. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Karen and Jonathan. Loving mother to her five sons, Ted, Bobby, Paul, Tony and Jamie, and her daughters-in-law, Mary CORKERY, Mary Noreen FARRELL, and Charlene ALECK. She was the daughter of the late Mike and Mary (DONAHUE) McMANUS, and grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia; she received a Bachelor of Arts degree, St. Francis Xavier University ('50) and a Bachelor of Library Science degree, McGill University ('52.) She leaves her sisters, Sheila HALIBURTON (Halifax,) Elizabeth McCARTY (Falmouth, Massachusetts.,) and Patricia WOODFORD (Baddeck, Nova Scotia,) and was pre-deceased by her brother, Jim McMANUS, and her sister, Eileen McMANUS. She was the absolutely delighted Nanny to her grandchildren Rory, Cara, Kathleen, Justine, Hillary, Ocean and Sara. Her nieces, nephews, relatives and dear Friends will miss her mischievous smile and her warm and generous heart. The family would like to thank Dr. Jane NAYAR for her years of dedicated care. Loving grandfather of Denis SIMONS (Leah), Calgary, Dan SIMONS, Calgary, Eden SIMONS, Fernie, British Columbia, Angie ALEXANDER, Niagara Falls, Sabrina BUCSKO, London, Andrei BUCSKO, London, Dylan STEELE, Sarnia, Clayton STEELE, Owen Sound and Paige STEELE, Corunna. Also survived by three step-granddaughters, Valerie ARTHUR- PLETZ, Parksville, British Columbia, Shelley ARTHUR, Comox, British Columbia and Melanie ARTHUR, Victoria, British Columbia and two step-great-granddaughters, Courtenay PLETZ and Madeleine PLETZ both of Parksville, British Columbia. Predeceased by parents William and Ada STEELE, brothers Wilfrid STEELE and Gordon STEELE and sisters Minnie ACKERMAN and Mary BROWN. Bruce was a radio officer with the British Merchant Marine in World War 2, and saw service in the convoys at the height of the Battle of the Atlantic, in the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. He was a 35 year employee and, after his retirement in 1983, a proud annuitant of Imperial Oil in Sarnia. Bruce sang in the Central United Church Choir for 50 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Liberty Lodge # 419 Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, Huron Lodge # 392 Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, Wawanosh Chapter # 15 Royal Arch Masons, St. Simon Cyrene Preceptory # 37, and Mocha Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 176, Forest. Visitation at the McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 431 Christina St. N. Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a Masonic service at 6: 30 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the McKenzie and Blundy Chapel 11 a.m. Friday followed by cremation. Warren died in his 96th year at Kitchener on 4th January 2005. Warren, affectionately called "Sparky" by his many Friends was predeceased by his loving wife Letha Jean SPARKS (née BRUCE) in 1997. Warren was the eldest child of James and Sarah (PELLOW) SPARKS and was born on the family farm in 1909 near Princeton, Ontario. He spent most of his teaching career in Schumacher, Ontario ending it as Principal of Schumacher High School. Warren is survived by his sister Anna ELMES (the late Rupert) and is predeceased by his brothers Lindsay (Isabel SPARKS,) Earl (Jean SPARKS,) Ralph (the late Janet SPARKS) and Allan. As well Warren is predeceased by his daughter Mary (Doug ALEXANDER) of Thunder Bay and is survived by his children Shirley WEISMAN (the late Gustav WEISMAN) of Stouffville, Jim SPARKS (Karen SPARKS) of Erin and Susan HALL (Harry HALL) of Uxbridge. Lawrence ROLUF, Aviator: 1914-2005
Prairie lad who was romanced by the glamour of flight had his wings even before the Second World War. Later, he perfected the role of the Canadian airborne firefighter

From the age of 4 when he saw his first air show, Lawrence ROLUF felt passionate about flying. That passion led to an adventurous life, during which he encountered stars of both the celestial and terrestrial kind.
Mr. ROLUF flew fishermen to secluded spots, prospectors and their equipment to locate lodes, airmen on training during the Second World War, and transported the ill. He also conducted aerial geophysical surveys and water-bombed fires.
Among other planes, he flew Tiger Moths, Norsemen and long-range, amphibious Cansos in many countries. "He never got over the glamour of flight," said his youngest sister, Adele ARCHER. "To him, it was something that was amazing, and he never got over the wonder of it."
Mr. ROLUF's Scottish-born mother often said her eldest son led a vagabond existence. Frequently, his family did not know where he was until he phoned, often from a foreign country. His origins were less exotic. Born in rural Saskatchewan, he grew up in Winnipeg, and Red Lake, Ontario, where his father owned the local movie theatre. By the age of 12, he was building radios; during his teens, he fixed up old cars.
After completing high school, Mr. ROLUF worked in local mines to earn money for flying lessons, which he took in Windsor, Ontario Beginning in 1942, he flew recruits training in air observation at No. 7 Air Observer School in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba The school was one of 10 Air Observer Schools across Canada, and along with many other specialized schools was established as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan.
Under the plan begun in late 1939, crews for the air forces of Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand were trained at airfields scattered across Canada. By its finish in 1945, the plan had trained 131,553 airmen, 55 per cent of them Canadian.
Historians J.L. Granatstein and Desmond Morton in Canada and the Two World Wars, published in 2003, describe the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan as "quite possibly Canada's major contribution to the war against the Axis powers."
As at all Air Observer schools, the recruits Mr. ROLUF flew at No. 7 Air Observer School learned aerial photography, reconnaissance and air navigation. Among those students Mr. ROLUF met was a young Richard Burton. He became acquainted with Lincoln ALEXANDER, also associated with the school. Mr. ALEXANDER went on to become a lieutenant-governor of Ontario, the first member of a visible minority to serve as such in Canada.
After the war, Mr. ROLUF set up his own small airline, called Chikuni after a river. The river was also known as Crooked River, so his family got a laugh out of calling Mr. ROLUF's business "Crooked Airline." He flew all manner of goods and people, including actor and Hollywood musical star Dennis Morgan to his favourite fishing hole.
Perhaps it was the nickname, but for some reason Mr. ROLUF's business did not last and he moved on to fly with Gold Bilt Air Services in Rouyn and Sept-Isles, Quebec From there, he piloted passengers and freight in wartime Cansos, the Canadian-built version of the U.S. Navy's Catalina. And, he did the same for the Distant Early Warning line. Once, after checking that his plane was securely lashed down for the night, he took a kick at a lump in the snow. The lump morphed into a young polar bear that ran the other way.
Mr. ROLUF moved from cold to hot climates when he flew geophysical surveys in Nigeria. While walking through an airport there, he heard his name called. It was Richard Burton, accompanied by Elizabeth Taylor. Ms. Taylor truly does have purple eyes, Mr. ROLUF later told his family.
On another of his jaunts, Mr. ROLUF delivered food to Cuba during the American embargo. He was met by Cuban soldiers bristling with arms. They relaxed when they saw the load of potatoes. Mr. ROLUF next worked in Australia, where he flew supplies from Darwin to New Guinea for a mining operation. Upon his return to Canada, he became ill with tuberculosis. Medications used to treat his lengthy illness permanently damaged his hearing.
Following his recovery, Mr. ROLUF joined Avalon Aviation in Gravenhurst, Ontario, where he began water-bombing. He was contracted out to different places, including Norway, France, Argentina and California. At home, he fought fires in Thunder Bay and trained water-bomber crews in Newfoundland.
Intelligent, a talented pianist and a loner, Mr. ROLUF got along well with wildlife. "He loved animals," Mrs. ARCHER said. "I think in many ways he related to animals better than he did to people."
As a teenager, her brother kept a pet crow in the attic. Later, he owned a race horse named Walhalla, which won one race and then became ill. It needed a lot of expensive medical attention and never raced again.
One of Mr. ROLUF's last flights occurred in 1989, when at the age of 75, he flew an old Canso, a large plane that demands a lot of physical strength, across the Atlantic. After hearing of his plans to deliver it to a museum in the Netherlands, a few in his family thought that he'd finally lost it -- until they received a call from Mr. ROLUF from Holland. He returned safely to retirement in Gravenhurst, Ontario, where he lived with his cats.
Lawrence Carl ROLUF was born on September 10, 1914 in Balcarres, Saskatchewan. He died on January 3 in hospital in Huntsville, Ontario, at the age of 90. He was predeceased a sister, Marjorie. He leaves brothers Albert and Fred, and sisters Grace KNECHTEL and Adele ARCHER.

Col., C.D., M.D. (U of T '36), D.P.H., F.R.C.P.C., F.A.P.H.A., M.R.S.H., beloved husband of Elizabeth Agnes (ALEXANDER,) and father of Robert William Francis, Peter Lionel, Lynda Diane (MacAuley), Stephen Lawrence and Susan Alice (Ryan), died in his 98th year, 8: 00 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2005 in Surrey, British Columbia, while holding the hand of his loving wife. He is succeeded by many cousins, of which Dr. William ROBERTSON and Robert HARRIS were among his best Friends, as was his brother-in-law, Alfred HARRIS. Eleven▲ grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also succeed him. All of his brothers and sisters, Queen Alice Pearl (HARRIS), Francis James, Antoinette Ellen (ROBERTSON), Emma Edith, Lily Willys (COOK), and William CORDINGLEY; and also Ethel (HARRIS) ELKERTON and his eldest son, Bill (Robert William Francis), predecease him. He worked throughout the Middle East, Pakistan and India helping to set up public health systems during and after the Second World War before settling in Toronto to direct the Ontario Ministry of Public Health Laboratory. Peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 13th, 2005, in his 85th year. Surrounded in love by his wife Helen (DALY,) daughters Jennifer and her husband George WALHOUT of Bowmanville, Dalyse and her husband Wayne SOBOL, Andrea and her husband Terry SHARP, Lisa and her husband Steve ALEXANDER, all of Milton, Melanie and her husband Dave FAWCETT of Stouffville and son Derek and his wife Karen MILNE of Calgary. Predeceased by an infant daughter in 1965. Cherished Papa of Shawn, Erin, Julie, Rebecca, Matthew, Andrew, Heather, Graham, Bradley, Emily, Olivia and Garret. Beloved brother of Margaret GRASSI of Calgary and Marion BAKER of Listowel. Predeceased by brothers Murray and Jack. Brother-in-law to Nita DALY of Guelph. Fred was born in Elma Township on April 11th, 1921, the son of George GRAHAM and Annie COLE. In 1939, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and following flight school in Toronto, he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer. He was stationed in Trenton, Ontario where he was assigned as aircraft mechanic for the Howard Aircraft. Thus began a life long love of airplanes. Fred married Helen DALY in 1951 and together they built a home in Rexdale where they raised 6 children. In 1956 he started his own electrical contracting business Mayo Electric. Years later, he founded Falstaff Electric, a family company that continues to prosper today. In 1978 Fred began building a Zenith aircraft and in 1982 experienced the thrill of his maiden flight. He was a longtime member of the E.A.A., Chapter 41 at the Brampton Flying Club where he shared his love of flight with many Friends. With fierce determination and tenacity, Fred met all of life's obstacles with a quick wit and unique sense of humour. He will be sadly missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
